A time to identify with more and display apathy for less — to express concern and love for a life that’s free to live. A time to act in present tense for riddles that poke at the future are unanswered or misinterpreted or explained when the future Is past. A time when now Is the answer to a question that’s never been clear; make the expressions of life be those of today for suppose today is the last In this world of overbearing opinions and dominions “we will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand” thus our depressions our failures Our confessions our victories our handicaps our contemplations our Ideals Our impulses Our Injuries our discriminations our hesitations and our expressions proud as we are often observed with scorn) are those of one life, not a multitude. Another year, another day and another apple for Robyn Williams. Sanderson welcomed us warmly, glad to be alive again There were old friends to greet and new friends yet to be found and as always, there was a tearful goodbye to summer... And suddenly there was a chance to begin again, to per- haps express ourselves differently; another chance to build a successful future. . . Each of us hoped that this year we would discover the reason for our existence and a purpose for our lives. . . It seemed strange without the class of '70 and as seniors, there was a private moment for each of us right at the beginning when we stopped and thought, ‘‘Where will | be a year from now?” September brought the typical uncertainty, freshness, and enthusiasm of the Sophomore to whom adventure beck- oned... Soon there would be the curiosity of new classes, the in- evitable carrying (and cursing) of books and hopetully, some insight into the meaning of unity. We have many questions, hopes, dreams for the future; We know what we are, what we would like to be, But at times we are lost, alone in a world That can be cold and cruel — a world that has lost all color. Each of us is searching, reaching for a dream That can only be found in the heart; But dreams are like sunlight: they come and go, Shine brighter than gold, but can never be held in the hand. Gatherings this year included the TALENT SHOW in the fall, the Math Club play ‘‘FOUR WATT ’, the Playmaker’s pro- duction of ‘‘THE CURIOUS SAVAGE,”’ and MATH NIGHT sponsored by many math rooms. Along with these “extra-cirricular’” gatherings there were the many PEP RALLIES held during school. All of these together helped to make the school year just a little brighter. We hope that this yearbook will be one that every member of the student body will be pleased with. A yearbook is a very hard publication to produce. Much time and work is needed and yet, is generally done by a few. At this time, | would like to thank the following people for all the work and time they have given: this year: Brenda McMichael for all her help, wisdom, and patience. Vicki Fabry for her time and much needed help and advice. Judy Anderson for her much needed encouragement, willpower, and deter- mination. “Wide World Photos’’ for pictures in the introduction. And most of all to Mrs. Holshouser, our advisor, who calmly guided us through the year with patience and understanding. Best wishes to all of the other many workers. As the days pass we see the time come when many of our friendships and activities come to a sad yet happy end — school’s almost over! 214 oe POSition Engtigh Grammar and Compas it rerio mae oe ar ‘ arena ang Con POS nh Gr ie OM posit Engtisn Sraen Tt Ard fy, ba Fass ah By FF humanities festival Dr. Lola May, Aggressive, energetic, Bringing enthusiasm, Conveying the meaning Of true learning To teachers and parents And most of all to us. Pe a ae A new freedom Where each one Was a teacher with His own ideas and interests — Willing to share (if able to give) — But yet a student With an open mind To learn and accept. Humanities Festival. 217 218 An idea that started with the hopes of one student And steadily grew until 1500 shared those hopes. Hopes that prompted over one hundred students To get involved in a tremendous mass production. It was an opportunity for self-expression A time for us to become ourselves — lost in a world That offered art, science, sports, and philosophy. A warm friendliness replaced our usual indifference as We realized education is not confined to a 8:45 to 3:30 Monday through Friday curriculum but it is constant; It cannot be separated from life; learning is living And the world of learning is infinite. 219 PICNIC 220 It was the beginning of the end for the Class of 1971. It began with a downpour — of ALL days Our picnic in the gym. . . Everyone signing everyone else’s little white paper, eating hamburgers and doughnuts and blocking out the reality of just how close the end was. 221 222 CLASS NIGHT Out of the time machine came A rehash of the major events of three eventful years — Selling (or trying to sell) Beth Sanderson’s first Homecoming The victory of abolishing the dress code Selling (or trying to sell) Barbecue tickets Mike Cook of Nasco Selling (or trying to sell) Rex Playing basketball on donkeys? Victory at the Junior-Senior Olympics Senior slump Does anybody really know what time it is? BACCALAUREATE Our people. Who are they? We thought for a few moments of our people of today who share with us and our people of tomorrow who wait for us. We realized that we too could be swayed to carry praise or blame a little too far and we paused and listened to Robert Frost’s advice and perhaps choose something for our lives as steadfast as a Star. oS) We saw our classmates Receive scholarships and awards for their achievements We were happy for them. We listened to classmates who truly cared about our school — We struggled with them. We suddenly saw 1000 friends bidding us farewell and wishing us well and with tear-stained cheeks and wrinkled robes we said goodbye. 224 GRADUATION For the last time the familiar strains of ‘Pomp and Circumstance’’ accompanied us to our seats where a challenge was dealt to us to make the future better than the past. 226 Four hundred names to be called Four hundred lives to be Influenced and toyed with. Moving forward on each little ‘‘X”’ the far future becoming closer and closer Which way shall | turn? Should | dare to be someone?
