I GRADUATION NIGHT - Tonight as we twelve dignified seniors, the graduating class of 1948, proudly walk forth to receive our diplomas, thoughts of the past years flash through our minds. Eleven years ago, nineteen eager first graders showed up at school bright andearly, It was the first day of school and were we thrilledl. None of us realized that this day marked the beginning of eleven long years of study. We had Miss Lee for a teacher that year. We were all crazy about her, even through she did make at least one of us sit in the hall each day. Of those nineteen original members, there are seven graduating tonight. Those seven who have stuck to- gether all these years are Doris, Betty Sue, Harriet, Betty Ann, Bill, joe Neil, and Robert Toe. J We were all back the next year-ready to travel the second mile on the rocky road of knowledge. Joe Mussey's name was added to the class roll that year, and it was' Miss Wade who had to struggle with teaching us readin', writin', and 'rithmetic. We learned enough that year to be put on up to the third grade. Miss Harrison was our teacher, and she was really swell. She must have taught us a lot because the next year Mr. Holt decided we knew too much to be in the fourth grade, so he promoted us. We were growing up- -just think, fifth graders! We got Miss Weimers for a teacher, and we liked her so much that we made them let her teach us another year. The sixth grade was a pretty big year for us all, and we surely had to study. It was worth it though, because then we reached the seventh grade and got Miss Odom for a teacher. We were the Big Shots over at grammar school for a whole year, and were those first graders envious! At the end of the year we turned into farm guys and gals and put on the cutest operetta called Molly Be jolly . Next came the eighth grade when we went over to the high school building. Mr. Davis was our sponsor, and David and Ernestina became a part of us that year. As tadpoles we had a big time. We eagerly looked forward to the next year, though, when we'd be in high school. We had a beautiful graduation exercise and were tremendously proud of those pieces of paper that said we were now in high school. All summer long we were counting the days 'til school would start again. At last the day came! We were high school freshmen-why, we were practically grown!! What a year! Not a single minute of it will ever be forgotten. Those seniors really pushed us around, and we were afraid to talk back to any of them. But we did think a lot of them-they were setting an example for us to follow in the years to come. Miss Lattimore was elected sponsor, Mrs. Duke was room-mother. They helped us stand up for our rights. The next year we got to initiate the fish , and, of course, that made us feel pretty big. Mrs. Hasty was our sponsor, Mrs. Beckett our room-mother. They were really nice to us sophs. U Next came the junior year when we picked out the best teacher in school Mrs. B , for our sponsor, and we got the nicest mama, Mrs. Mansfield, to be oui ikoorrg-rpother. 46-47 was a big year for us all. Most of the boys stayed busy playing t l d b ' ' oo a an asketball for ole S. H. S. . The girls and Mrs. B. were constantly having ideas about howto make money. The -Iunior Play, His Ozark Cousin , was presented in December. It was really a hit, and you've never seen such acting ability' We put on a scrumptious banquet and prom for the Seniors Evervthin was all f' h U . I g ixe up lice a circus, and everyone had a wonderful time. Oh yes, I nearly forgot--we had d. . an a fition to our class that year. Chris Hempel moved all the way from Austin to be one o us. Then came the really big year. We were seniors! Billy Carter joined our clas th t - s a yezlri, magang us tvlscplve strong. We weren't many in number, but we made up for it in u 1 q ty.. e got rs. B. for a sponsor again, and I don't know what we would have done without her help, she was just wonderful to us. Since Mrs. Peavy was the first room-mother we ever had, we decided to make her the last one too Because there weren't many of us we really had to stand, u h h V . - A p or eac ot er. We Reade Sure that la senior got elected to all the important offices, such as student presi- n , fum mayor, newspaper editor, etc. The boys went all out for football and did everything possible to bring S. H. S. its first football championship in 47. Both boys and girls worked. hard to give Sanderson a First Division band at contest in the spring. Our play was a big success, and the Juniors helped end the year with a 1ong-to-be-remem- bered banquet and prom. This about winds up the school days for us seniors, but we shall long cherish these days as our happiestj It will seem strange to us not to belong around S H S. next year, and it is our desire to wish the best of everything to the classes that follow. JOE MUSSEY Uufffkamdng ghdmfs It has been customary each year for the faculty to select students who have contributed notably to school life in both the academic and the extra-curricular fields. This procedure was varied slightly this year in that nominations for this honor were made by a representative student committee and final selection by a faculty committee from the nominations. The four students pictured below are those chosen. Others nominated were: jimmy joe Russell, Arturo Gutierrez, and Jimmy Bradford.
