ifuaft The Diary of a Freshman Dear Diary September 5, 1942 This is the most awful day of my life and to think it was the day that I could hardly wait for This morning 24 of us Freshmen, 13 boys and 11 girls, went without breakfast cause Mr Bradford, the principal, wanted everybody to register early We huddled near the front door and wore out our legs waitin' for someone to open up Boy, was we glad when Mr Bradford drove up But would you believe it, he passed us up with a weak 'Hi there, ch1ldren Imagine calling grownups 'ch1ldren Anyway, we tagged him to the office, but he shut the door right in our faces stood in line for hours and hours, just d1dn't know what else to do Finally, someone yelled out, 'Seniors first, please' Gosh, we was the sickest sick bunch you ever did see, but we all kept still except Mar jorie Jessup and she had to bust out crying We held our hands over her mouth, cause we d1dn't want them high and mighty seniors to hear her She said her new shoes hurt her feet You'd thought we was the wrong color the way the Sophomores looked at us with that all important air About three in the afternoon, we got in not a soul asked us what we wanted to take Guess they just had to give us the subjects no one Dear Diary September 6, 1942 School started off this morning with a bang Everyonebut us seemed to know what it was all about We couldn't get anybody to tell us a thing lhe juniors was friendly like, but they were too busy for words We never did find the right rooms and all got mixed up and everything who in the name of Sam Hill could go to class if they d1dn't know where the class was? well, to make a long story short, we just got pushed around all day took the sunny seats, slid down and sat on our caps they wouldn't let us wear them for some reason and there wasn't enough lockers to go around Dear Diary September 9, 1942 Class officers had to be elected today We chose Mrs Bradford sponsor cause she was the prettiest teacher 1n school Well, the Juniors chose her too and made us give her up We picked out Miss Kinkler the next prettiest one, and the Sophomores bristled up and said they'd fight for her Gosh, we spent all our time electin' a sponsor we finally got Mr Long, and when he came in we wondered why we didn't think he was the , 0 I . We else wanted.
