Throughout this season the Sand-ites were defend- ing champions of the 7A District. They ended the season tied with Pawhuska and Vinita for second position, while the undefeated Miami Wardogs won the Conference Crown for 1949. In the final game of the season the Sandites met the Wardogs of Miami with a slim mathematical chance to retain the Championship but the Wardogs upended the Sandites 39-13. The Sandites. along with Miami and Pawhuska, placed 4 boys on the All-Conference team, composed of the out- standing 22 players in the league. Eugene Palmer, Bob Sullivan, Kennith Madewell, and Stanley Gordon were selected from Sand Springs. For the second consecutive year a Sandite has been named on the All-State football team. This year the boy chosen was Kennith Madewell, So, you see, this has been another big year in Sand- ite football. BASKETBALL ERDIGRIS VALLEY CHAMPIONS Rising from last year's tie for first- place, the Sand Springs Sandites'took sole possession of the Verdigris Valley Basketball Champion- ship for the 1949-50 season. Also ranked as an outstanding team in the State of Oklahoma, this year's squad had an undefeated conference re- cord and lost only to non-conference opponents. This year's squad, coached by Cecil Han- kins, made one of the highest records of any Sand Springs High School team. On this magni- ficent team there were two seniors: R. J. Rob- bins and Eugene Palmer, five juniors, Richard Courter, Doice Dover, Billy Dan Bigby, Stan- ley Gordon, and Ray Cunningham, and three sophomores, Wayne Sulliva-n, Paul Burris, and L. C. Palmer. All of these boys, and Coach Hankins, have put fbrth all their team work and competitive effort for the mutual goal of making as high a sportsmanship reqord as possible not only for themselves but for their school, their town, and all their fans. This year's B team, coached by Maurice Hail, also made a spiendid record in games won and lost. One of their outstanding characteristics was their ability to be behind throughout most of a game and then suddenly spring into a ball of fire and win over even the most confident op- ponents. In basketball, as in every sport, Sand Springs again has made an outstanding record. S.S. ROBERTS' I One of the most important jobs backstage in a theater is the stage managtr, and in athletics there is an equally impor- tant behind-the-scene job. This is the job of daily gym assistant. For the past two years this job has been held by G. D. Roberts and he has done a swell job of it-just ask any football or bas- ketball player or ask the coaches, personally. He checks equipment out and in for the athletics as expert- ly'as a machine and he also keeps our dressing rooms and show- ers ship shape. Here's a boy who deserves a pat on the back, a handshake, and a word of congratulation from every athletic fan in our school. You did a swell job and Thanks a lot, G. D. IOR S- ...t..,..,....,:.mn 'X James A. Buck Weaver Many people wonder why Sand Springs supports such a strong Junior High athletic program. Well, the reason is that Junior High football, basketball, and track has proved to be one of our High School's greatest assets in the way of Sandite athletic material. A Junior High football team was first organized in 1946, with such members as Kennith Madewell, Bob Lingo, Bob Sullivan, Don McCracken, and many others. Take a look at the record these bovys have made since then. In basketball R. J. Robbins, Eugene Palmer, Richard Counter. and many others have been, at one time or another, members of past Junior High squads. A list of the line-ups in all of this year's athletics would reveal that over 9070 of the boys have, at one time or another, been mem- bers of the Junior High athletics. Being on a Junior High team helps the boys by giving them an idea as to which position they are best qualified to play or which event to enter, etc. By starting out early on the Junior team a boy has a chance to develop his natural abilities be- fore he gets into High school. Also the coach can watch and work with these boys and plan for the years to come. Junior High athletics will teach youngl players as well as young fans giood sportsmanship, which is one of e most vital things in any phase of life. '-I lm li in 5122 Lain nuanu- :.l'. 1. ' JUNIOR HIGH IJOOTBALL TEAM 9 1-0 NTT .V , li Finishing the second consecutive undefeated season in football, Coach Buck Weaver and his Junior High Sandites have probably set one of the outstanding records in Junior High gridiron history. Scoring a grand total of 177 points in eight games this fall, the Jun- ior Sandmen yielded only 1-1 points to their opponents, while running their string of victories to 16 straight over the two-year period. Opening the season with a 7-0 victory over Drumright's Junior eleven, the Junior Sandites in their next few games defeated Bristow, 19-7, and shutout victories over Ilruniriglmt, 21-0, Broken Arrow, 51-Op and Webster, 26-0, for 'their second straight undefeated season. During this outstanding season there were Billy Norris at right tackle accompanied by Ralph Condray who operated the others tackle spot. Arnold Cordova, Vernon Perry and Wesley Parker, left guard, center, and right guard respectively, insured the strength of the forward wall. At the end positions were Bill Parris on the left and Jtrry Wofford on the right. In the backfield some of the bi-g guns were Johnny Wright, wing back, Billy Wooten, general of his team at the blocking back spot along with Allen Luce, fullback, and Charles Jackson, tailhack. James Roberts, reserve tail- baick, also saw a lot of action. The boy with the educated toe on the team was Billy Parris, left end, who made an outstanding record in conversions. Norris was elected captain for the year. IUNIOR llltill BASKIZTBALL SQUAD , 1 5 My man Friday, as Junior High coach, Buck Weaver refers to David Francis, his daily gym assistant, always does a quick, thorough job, Yes, behind-the-scene in our Junior High sports there's another boy, one who should be recognized for his excellent cooperation and help in assisting in the func- tion of Junior athletics. Francis has been in high school for two years and he has been a great asset to Weaver and his athletic prog-ram. Thanks to you, David, for a job well done. .5 SENIOR HIGH FOO'l'BAl ,l, TEAM MEMORIAL STADIUM The Sand Springs Railway has the lowest fare for school ohildren of any railroad in the United States.
