CLASS PROPHECY Back in the Smoky Mountains on the bank of a clear, rippling stream of water, sat a man and his small son. The man was joe Herman Young, jr., and his son Ioe Herman III. The son had just entered school this fall. The father saw in the eyes of his small son himself as a beginner in school. Gazing intently at the water, as it tumbled over the moss-covered rocks, he thought of the days when he was in school. joe Jr. began wonder- ing what became of the class of '53 of which he was a member. Thinking of each member as he stared into the water he saw: His ole' buddy, Carroll Cagle, who was always so fond of cheese. Carroll married his favorite little red- headed high school flame, and is now running a huge Liigburger Cheese manufacturing company in Switzer- an . Bill Coffey and jack Lovingood are now playing profesional ball for the House of David under the capable leadership of Chet Griffin. Also, in the line of athletics, Ed Brinkley is coaching the Enka Rayonites. It was perfectly fitting to see Ioyce Keller, Carol Jones, Virginia Nave, Pat Brown, and Larry Revels oc- cupying the positions of library teachers in Western North Carolina schools. Bill Clark and Betty Looney had married and settled down to a fine home life. john Moore is head of the Annapolis Naval Academy while jerry Forest is in charge of XVest Point Army Academy. These boys were always qualified to go far. Edwin Gaston, having completed his final year in medical school, has exchanged vows with Dee Hughey, who is a laboratory technician. In the last report, they had established a health clinic in Lost Cove. Washington was knocked cold when Helen Thomp- son, Ruth Crawford, Shirley Cooke, Polly Christopher, Barbara Early, Betty Franks, Virginia Holcombe, and Barbara Parker went to work for the government as stcnographers. Last week's headlines were that Don McElrath had won the Indianapolis speedway for four consecutive years. He must really be rolling in the dough. It is rumored that George Mehaffey may accept the nomination to run for president of the United States. George was a capable senior class president. Regina Wilkie and jo Lena Willis are now co-man- agers of the Roses five and ten cent store. In their twin apartments on State Street, julia Car- lock Rhash and Ioan Duckett Westall have a daily washing consisting of diapers and children's clothes. The last count was five each. A duo-concert was given june 15, by Ralph Brooks and Wynelle Ford in Carnegie Hall. Ralph was at the iano and VVynelle sang several numbers, exhibiting lier well developed alto voice. The navy claimed several members of the class of '53 upon graduation. They were: Carlie Rogers, Charlie Sprouse, Bob Arrington, and Charles Puterbaugh, who are now gobs aboard the ship Old Ironsidesf' Jack Lindsey was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for outstanding bravery in the Air Force by retiring President Doug Clark. Mrs. Dick Davis fNancy Cochranel went to State College and majored in agriculture. She now milks the cows on the farm, and helps her husband run the dairy. Shirley Annette Brooks is the well-known socialite in New York. The Brooks' parties have always been famous and are now nationally known. The Power's Model Agency has just come forth with three new sensations, Martha Jean Trull, Arnetta Hen- son, and Ruth Hunter. In her second year in Hollywood, Peggfy Ann Goode has just completed her third in a series o musical pic- tures. She starred with the also upcoming actor, Gary Crosby, son of the world famous Bing Crosby, in the big hit musical Flucie Lou. They say that gal's got itl Three more girls who married after graduation and settled down to raise a family were Charlotte Hosteller, Ruth Field, and Annette Creasman. The papers are already publicizing the six girls who are the daughters of an old classmate, Shirley Crook. Slhe plans to make a professional basketball team of t em. The girl who was selected best looking the senior year, Barbara Wilson, walked away with the title of Miss America. Calvin Davis is the chief chef in his own bakery, Moody and Davis Baking Company. Cakes are their specialty. ' Mary Alice Conner and Norma Lou Brown are now registered nurses and have dedicated the next three years to service in the Army. They are now in Japan. joy Alexander is now in charge of Morganton Home for Girls, where Franklin Lyda and Ken Sherrill have been trying to get a free ticket. The Valley Drug Store in Candler, still claims juanita Webster, but now, instead of a soda jerk, she is the owner. Also Bobbie McKinnish is now the manager of the Beacon, the favorite hang-out of all Sand Hi lians. It has been heard that Barbara Patterson and Frances Gosselin have been seen at the better places in Florida where they spend their lengthy vacations. A group of girls, former classmates, have reached a well-deserved goal. They are now women congressmen and are holding some of the highest jobs in America. These are: Geraldine Collins, Barbara Jean Woody, Mary Elaine Banks and Marie Beachboard. Initiative is a very valued trait. Shirley Starnes, a nice looking girl in the class of '53, has moved, baggage and all, to Mars Hill, where she married an ole' acquaintance of hers. Way out in Texas, Bobby Scott, Raymond McKinney and Charles Roberts own joint farms of one thousand acres apiece where they keep the cyotes company. Louise McFarland married a million dollar miser and now she is living across the tracks. Mary Candler caught an heir and is now up in society. Clara Faye Ballard and Paula jean Lowery are authors of the Lonely Hearts Club. just the other day we heard they received a letter about the love life of Neil Parris and Dorothy Smith. He doesn't know how to propose to her. Faye Roland, Peggy King, and Shirley Ray have sur- prised us all with their unusual talents. They are lady wrestlers! They just gave an exhibition in the beautiful city of Asheville. Yes, it was a wonderful life. THE END X
