Tournament- wise, the Lions were Section 8 runners-up. ALTON PETERS His basketball teams in regular season play have won 175 games and lost 80g though baseball records are in- complete, his record therein is equally impressive - during the last nine seasons Cfall and spring each yearl his teams won 62 games and lost only 9. Of even greater importance, he has continuously sought to teach his boys to conduct themselves like gentlemen. in the game or on the sidelinesg always by example as well as instruction he has taught them to accept with equal grace both victory and defeat. His spirit of fair play and the quiet dignity he displays - if J i 5, x i true ,S g K is ' si fi' Q ss t. 1-Ss W HERMAN BERT HAMRIC barrin one as a hi h school A homerun per game - g - g senior here in 1946-'7 was a springboard from which he dived into professionalbaseball. Startingin 1949 in the Class D Eastern Shore League, Ham has worked his way - steadily upward - to AAA competition and a month in the major leagues. Continually outstanding in the Brooklyn Dodgers' farm organization, he performed with the St, Paul Saints of the American Association the past two seasons, except for a brief stintwith Montreal in the International League atthe beginningof the 1954 season and a month with the parent Dodger club last year. In 1954 his bat- ting average of .350 was a virtual tie with the champion in the Association - a broken hand suffered in August prevented his getting the required number -of times at bat to be named official batting champion. even when the game is hottest and the crowd is loudest - is admired in sports circles everywhere. He is pictured above center with Mr. W. R. Fugitt, secretary of the state Secondary School Commision,and three basketball coaches, Mr.Fred Schaus, of WVU, Mr. William Whetsell, Marietta College, and Mr. Leland Byrd, of GSC. This group was photographed at the L-K Basketball Banquet, held in Marietta April 26g Mr. Peters is holding the Conference basketball trophy which was presented to him and his team at this event. JOE MILLER As member of the school's basketball team during his senior year 119533, Joe became SFHS's only all- state athlete. Now a junior at Alderson-Broaddus Col- lege, he has been three years a regular member of the varsity basketball squad there. consistently turning in outstanding performances. He has become the second player in state college conference play to score more than 1,000 points in a single season, and now has the third highest number of points in conference career his- tory. 2,5l7, with one season left to play. In the NAIA tournament in Kansas City lastyear,Joe broke the foul- shooting record with 24 free throws in 30 attempts in a single gameg this year he received a S300 scholarship and was named to the Little All-America second team.
