It may be a small town but it will remain a big treasure in our memories throughout our lives. It was through the support and backing of the Sanborn people we were able to complete many of our plans while in Sanborn High, and wish to show our apprec- iation through this dedication. We hope Sanborn will be as proud of us as we are of being a small part of it. .-f-2 1930191 A r X ' mei Z..-Tgl 0 0 9 . 0 Un g ' I pr vw 1 1 Clark Scoles, Willis Vander Woude, Mable Spykerman, Leslie Getting, Harriet Raymond, O. Our high school band has 48 members in uniform. The marching band was especially active, play- ing at all of the home football games. We also marched at one of the Morningside Foot- ball Games and at the Orange City Tulip Festival. The band received a two rating in the state contest. The mixed chorus played a big part in the music department. It consisted of 39 members and also received a two rating in the state contest. The girls' glee club contained 38 members and was the only big group to get a one rating this year, Sanborn's junior band, which consisted of 18 members, readily supplied the demands of the big band. Ramona McGranahan, Kay Roelofs. Calvin Vander Woude, and Ed Baldwin spent Thanksgiving vacation in Des Moines, singing in the all-state chorus. A Christmas program, with all of the grades in school taking part, was the biggest program furnished by the music department. We also had a spring concert with all of the contestants for the preliminary contest appearing. Mixed Chorus, glee club, and band also took part at this concert. We had 14 entries in the state solo contest. Delores Van Wyke's piccolo solo was the only entry to receive a one rating, Twelve of the entries received two ratings. The contestants were: Shirley Hickey-treble voice high Calvin Vander Woude-baritone Ed Baldwin-baritone Glee Meriam-trumpet 355- 34 Donna Snyder-saxophone Ma rj ean Peelen-trumpet Z Janice Getting-bass clarinet Carol Watson-piano K g Jim Getting-baritone Jerry E ric son-trombone all Ramona McGranahan-treble voice medium Barbara Hickey-treble voice high Kay Roelofs-clarinet The band chose Eileen Damman as the senior who had contributed the most to the music department. She received the Arion Award which is given by the Twentieth Century Club. We would like to thank Mrs. Bueghly for the time and effort she has spent to help us become more interested in music, and better musicians. Mrs. Dolson, trying to help, got her a date with Freddie Shermer, the boss' son. The Hildegarde got mixed upwith some beauty clay, a boss in the bathtub, and astolen watch, while trying to get some long pants for Freddie, so her brothers and Ellie-May and Jill couldn't make fun of Freddie at the dance. Freddie showed up to take Hildegarde to the Prom in a new suit with long pants. He admitted he took the watch from his father's desk and exchanged it for the suit. CLASS PROP!-IECY It was a beautiful spring morning when my space ship from Mars finally arrived on earth. Ten years had passed sincelhad seen the good town of Sanborn so I decided to spend some of my time there and see if I could recognize it. The first thing I saw upon arriving was a huge night club. I'd heard to go in and have a look around. In his large office, Bob Sullivan was sitting at a desk counting his proceeds from the night before. He told me Bob Crawford was his main attraction this week. Bob had taken over Victor Borge'splace and was entertaining at all the most famous night clubs in the country. He said he was goingto have Eileen Damman, the word famed concert pianist and Shirley Hickey, the equally famous opera singer next week. He figured he'd really hit the jack pot to be so lucky as to get two suchtalented people inone week. I wished him luck and wandered back out into the street where I saw a tow-headed little boy selling the morning paper. He turned out to be one of Shirley Ver Hoef's children. He told me that his mother had married soon after she graduated from high school and now had four other boys beside himself. I bought a newspaper from him and moved outof the way to glance at it. The headlines blazed: Delbert Wright, famed inventor has just successfully invented the supersonic, superflour superjet. It is estimated to be the best jet that has been invented yet. On the sports page there was a full page picture of Jim Peterson who had just been named the world's most popular wrestler. I heard drums inadistance and waited to see what was going on. As the noise came closer I discovered it was a parade led by a very pretty girl. I put on my glasses to get a better look and found it to be Joyce Kool. Following closely behind the band were two Cadillacs with Donna Flickner riding in one and Lane Leemkuil riding in the other. Donna was the town's mayor and was now introducing Lane as an Admiral in the Navy who had just come back from a dangerous mission in the Arctic Ocean. As I moved down the street, Isaw a-man changing the billing on the front of a large theatre so I waited to see what show was coming next. Ray Huibregtse was starring in a new picture. I inquired about it and found out that aHollywood agent discovered Ray and immediately gave him a ten year contract. This is Ray's third picture of the year and was already working on another. The man told me that he had a very good agent. QBy the way. his agent was Mary Ann who is also his wifeJ I wandered down a side street until I saw two ladies leaning over a fence talking for all they were worth. I-found them to be Dorothy Warnke, now Dorothy Boneschans and J oliene Van Roekel, now Jollene Toner both happily married. They were discussing the plans for their monthly meeting of the women's club. LuAnn Pingel, also happily married, was president. She and her husband own one of the largest farms in Iowa. I moved a little farther down the street and saw a huge moving van parked in front of a new house. I saw Ed Baldwin carrying box after box into the house. He told me he and Janice Getting now his wife, were medical missionaries and had just returned from the wilds of Africa where they had been teaching the natives better health habits. Janice came out of the house just then with three little minature missionaries following her. I said hello, then moved on down the street. On the edge of' town I saw a cute little building with the sign: Tracy and Dwayne's Wacky Whip Drive-In . I walked in and found Tracy waiting on Jean Hickey. After she finished she told me that after they had graduated, Dwayne became quite a casanova and she had been the lucky one who had caught him. They were making thousands of dollars on their large chain of Wacky Whip Drive-Ins. I asked her about Jean Hickey. She told me that Jean was the Home Economics teacher in Sanborn and avery good one, too. There was only one drawback however, she had to be away from her husband, which of course, is the new Victor Borgie, so much of the time. On my way back to the main street, I saw a large building with a sign out front that said: Snyder and Getting Fix-It Shop. The names sounded familiar so I went inside to find out more. As soon as I stepped inside I recognized Marlene Getting in anurse's uniform. She told me that she and Donna Snyder had built the medical clinic in Sanborn after they had graduated from nurses' training together. She was so happy they had built :lt near the creamery, which is owned by Larry and Terry Baldwin. This way she and Larry could take turns watching their twin sons. They were continually getting lost in the new block long creamery. Larry and Terry certainly became successful as new owners of the creamery. Marlene also told me that they were plan- ning to expand their clinic into Melvin so Donna could be closer to her home, which is on a farm just south of Melvin. Back of Main Street I saw another big building with the sign: Strang Enterprise written on the front. As I peered in the window I saw a beautiful secretary sitting on the boss' lap. The secretary was no one else but Marlene Schultz. I could see by that, that Virgil was a very successful businessman. I was pretty tired by this time so I decided to find a room in a hoel. Since I was here to have a good time, I went to the best I could find. As I walked up to the desk, I recognized Bill Hakeman standing behind it. He told me he was the owner of it but was just taking over while his manager went out to supper. Bill was still kind of blurry eyed from watching the leader of the parade, so I got aroom and wandered around the lobby. I found a large showcase of trophies which I inquired about. They all belonged to Arwin Van Wyk for being the world's most daring auto dare devil. I heard music coming from the TV set in the corner so I went over to see who it was. There on the TV screen was Don Rubsam, the star hill billy singer on the Rambling Range Riders TV show. As I went up the elevator to my room I thought how wonderful it was that each person in the senior class of 1954 had made a success of himself. f f' s Q , 5 T ff HA Q19 N 5 K fx, ' Y QNJ We, the senior class of 1954, would like to thank all of you who helped to make this an- nual possible. gi To those of you who very graciously gave your many ads, For we couldn't have done this without you. We also wish to extend our thanks to the teachers who have struggled with us in primary on up through. We hope you will be proud of us, knowing you had a hand in our lives too.
