MR R-XLPH H PHELPS Prmclpal SAOOK NS?9Ll Lt and fA8 Q'6L6!lfLd,f8 The members of the Class of 1960 have been concerned w1th the lmprovement of school Splrlt for the past four years At f1rst there was confus1on regardmg the nature of school sp1r1t For example It was thought that trad1t1on no matter what the trad1t1on or sensatlonal aCt1V1t1eS or w1nn1ng teams were baslcallyxmportant Gradually they found that the school Splrlt they were try1ng to develop must be based upon a combmatlon of cont1nuous effort and solld accompllshment They learned that qualltles such as true frlendhness among students lncreaslng respons1b1l1ty 1n student government servxce to school and commun1ty lnterestmg classes and a relat1onsh1p between students and teachers that develop real accomphshment 1n sk1lls knowledge and creat1v1ty must be the basxs for real respect and hence a f1ne school sp1r1t Th1s year's graduates learned to 1dent1fy lmportant areas need1ng 1mprovement and worked hard to galn S1gI'l1f1CaI1t accompl1shment ln these areas Leadersh1p 1n reducmg the haz1ng of Freshmen the development of a student court system 1n the student government and efforts to meet the mcreasmg requ1rements 1n classrooms as the faculty endeavored to educate each student m accordance w1th h1s ab1l1ty are examples of the1r accomp11shment A f1ne school sp1r1t IS sim1lar to the spirit necessary for a happy hfe Real happmess depends upon the same qual1t1es that make for a f1ne school sp1r1t fr1endl1ness serv1ce respons1b1l1ty for self the development of one's talents and cont1nuous effort are all necessary 1n 11fe Even as graduates they w1ll be tempted to substitute mere acquamtance for frlendshlp selflshness for serv1ce get r1ch qulck and other 'success g1mm1cks for true accompllshment I am conf1dent that the 1960 graduatmg class has learned how to develop real school sp1r1t and w1ll contmue to evaluate l1fe's act1v1t1es 1n such a way that thexr efforts w1ll br1ng real accompllshment and real respect 1nto the1r l1ves Prmcip 1 .C , -- -- ' , .
