The Searchlight wishes to recall to your mem- ory the happy days in 1957. This was the year when the citizens of San Rafael passed bonds for the erection of new high school buildings. As these new buildings will better serve more students, we have chosen them as the theme of the 1957 Searchlight. JOAN RASONSKY-EDITOR hw-me-9 f L.. N-nb , . 5 f' Y- M VL TABLE OF ACIADEMIC1 . . Mrs. Eleanor Murray. Her guiding council, balanced with understanding. and inspiration. has been greatly appreciated by the students and faculty of SRHS. Her unique classroom personality. and the knowledge of her subjects points up her outstanding teaching ability, Good nature radiates from her face as she cheerfully greets all whom she meets. Who could forget her whole-hearted co-operation at all SRHS's social events? Faithfully she has been present at these functions for many years. In addition to serving all the students in the school. Mrs. Murray has given personal help and advice to those especially needful of council. Many girls are grateful to her for jobs they have obtained through her services. Her many activities are far too numerous to mention. Her presence in SRHS will most assuredly be missed now that she is to retire. We are grateful for having had the privilege of knowing her. She will be missed. but never forgotten by those who know her. Thus, in acknowledgement of a person instrumental in the advancement of our high school, we dedicate this book. 5 PRINCIPAL' MESSAGE I would like to be able to personally say to each San Rafael High School student, Congratulations to you on the completion of another year of work! I hope that it has been an especially happy and worthwhile one for you!l' Your plan of building a program of education for yourself is, of course, a very serious and important endeavor. I sincerely wish that each San Rafael High School student could fully realize how vital each year of his high school career will be to his future life. This is why I would say to you: S'Use your time carefully! Build your life of tomorrow on a solid foundation! Of course, continual building is going on in San Rafael High School, too! New buildings, new facilities, new programs of instruc- tion, must constantly be provided to meet the ever-changing needs of students and the community, but perhaps the most impor- tant thing of all is the fact that San Rafael High School will be the kind of school that its students want it to be. You are build- ing your school as well as yourself! As good citizens, let us all work and build together to guar- antee the future for ourselves, our school, our community, and our country. Sincerely, Max M. Appleby, Principal Mr. Dr. Max Appleby, principal, looks over some projected plans for fu- ture buildings. Ralph Phelps, vice principal of SRHf . 2. Lf 4 . And at last the day comes. Flag raising ceremonies on the front lawn were very impressive. Under the leadership of Rich Critchlow and Rich Hawkins, we sponsored freshman noon ral- lies. The Polio Box Lunch Sale proved to be a starting point for our class. We placed second in the annual sale. As we looked forward to our sophomore year with anticipation, we made plans to carry out during our four years here. A One big event this year was the F rosh Party, which was the basis for our annual class parties, through the years. A W e 'Flaws :see . Q Allan Zensius and Mike Watters were elected class presidents during our sophomore years. Many of our class tried out for major clubs and were selected. This year, too, we began to take part in many more school activities. Again, we placed second in the Polio Box Lunch Sale, and the news of this was placed in our paper, the '4Soph Squawkf' Our football team tied in the NBL for first place. Many boys decided to go out for football and other sports. Sophomore girls began to play a large part in sports also-as songleaders! The Variety Show held interest for many of us, too. Sinvinv, dancing and narration, all had D D representatives from the Sophomore Class. THAT THE SENIORS BUILT As juniors, more and more responsibilities were being placed on us. But we were capable and ready to accept them under the guidance of Rich Critchlow and Rich Hawkins. Money-raising projects were first on our list of activities of the year. We looked forward to the annual Senior Fare- well, and worked hard, but had much fun doing lt. In the party mood, we planned a junior party and held it in the cafeteria. Many of our class- mates received honor and distinguished medals. Other students went out for sports and brought to SRHS an NBL football championship. Soon the year was almost over and students began campaigning for student body offices. This year our football team fought to victory again. The songleaders were composed entirely of junior girls, and we had two representatives on the yell- leading group. f . a W 3 Nik U f to X U . - meh I L in i:2W ' it S Illllf if ti - n f T 3 K. iillllllll le LM- LMAT- Lkaxtw kw ,fl www! bww wi 3 41 -1 Now, as we come to the close of our four years at San Rafael High School, we remember many things that happened here. Pete Siewert was elected Student Body president for the fall term. Our classmates helped us win the NBL cham- pionship in football, again. Many others ran for student body offices in the spring. The Red ,n' White staff, the Searchlight staff and committees took more seniors from our class. Dick Hawkins was elected student body president. Bill Monti was our class president and we started plans for our Senior Ball. Allan Zensius, spring president, helped us fin- ish plans for the Senior Ball. After many commit- tee meetings, we chose the Alta Mira Hotel as the site of the Ball. Now, as we watch the flag-lowering ceremonies on the front lawn we remember many happy days at SRHS. We realize that our four years here have pre- pared us to face the future: college, work, mar- riage, whatever path we may choose. Along life's way will resound thy praise-Hail San Rafael ! TUMBLI G LLIB The big activity of the year for the Tumbling Club is the Minor Sports Carnival, a public presen- tation of tumbling, wrestling, boxing, and other athletic events, for which members prepare for weeks in advance. Bigger than ever this year, the show attracted the largest crowd in its history. The club is under the direction of Fred Hines, boys' P.E. teacher. ARSITY FGOTBALL When the final gun sounded and thc 1956 foot- ball season was over, the San Rafael Bulldogs had finished the most successful season in the history of the school. With Coach Paul Miller at the helm and Jack Sims, Bill Nave and Rich Nave assisting, this team rolled off eight straight wins for the season. They garnered eleven straight wins over a two-year span. Bill Monti finds the going rough as he meets two defenders. Coach Miller predicted the varsity could go as far as they wished. They were picked as one of the football powers in Northern California. The team, loaded with hustle and desire, worked as a unit and rolled past every obstacle in their path They ran hard, tackled low, hustled throughout a fine season, and made a record for future teams tc aim for. The practice games made things look even worse, for the squad lost the majority of them, but by the time the league season began they were beginning to sharpen up, and Mr. Colombo's hopes were raised. The Bull- dogs' first game saw them going down to defeat to a much taller Petaluma quint 44-35. However, Ray Crews came into his own by scoring 19 points. The Bulldogs caught fire after that and won three straight over Healdsburg, Sonoma, and Analy. ASKETBALL Bulldogs still had hopes for a championship, but once again Petaluma nipped San Rafael in the clos- ing minutes. They came back, however, to win their next one over Healdsburg 40-38. Sonoma pulled an upset over the Bulldogs 56-42, but San Rafael ended their sea- son on a note of success, defeating Analy. Much credit is due to Coach Colombo and to Bill Monti, Ray Crews, Steve Monti, Rich Hawkins, and Dan Callahan and the rest of the team for turning in such a successful season against almost overwhelming odds. FRCDSH BASEBALL The first freshman baseball squad in the history of San Rafael was organized by Coach Dewey Fink. Mr. Fink was quick to realize that there was much talent in the squad. The boys had had years of expe- rience playing in the Little League and the Pony League, and they brought this knowledge and skill with them. Despite a trouncing in their first game of the season, they jumped back to take the next two games by impressive margins. Under the guidance of Mr. B, Simontaechi, the team rounded slo into shape, hampered early in the season by bad weather. Two of the 1 three meets were canceled because of rain. Then, early in the season, 4- . . ,. . . The 440 yard relay team set a new NBL Relay record at Santa Rosa. The team, Ken Carnine, John Blomquist, Les Sadler, and Tom Schulz ran the event in a time of 38.7. SWIMMI This year,s swimming team was perhaps one of the best San Rafael has produced in many a year. The team was well-rounded and had a very success- ful season. One standout on the varsity was Steve Monti, a senior, who broke the school record in the 50-yard free style in the time of 25.2. Other stal- warts on the varsity were Rich Untermann, 200- yard free, and Rich Locati 100-yard free. Coach Thomson also was blessed with a standout diver and B SQUAD, FIRST ROW: Mark Evjer, Pete Stokely, Bill Strider, Doug Finley, Mike Ryan, Pat Wilson, Pete Escallier, Ron Sabacca, Bill Kuperus. SECOND ROW: 150 yard individual medley man in Mike Quinnel. The B's did as well, winning a majority of their meets, and looking like strong contenders for the NBL Section II championship. The highlight of the season was the 100 yard four-man relay which set a new record in 49.1 seconds. All in all it was a successful season for the Bulldogs, and they look forward to another next year. r Gary Westover, Rich Rowe, Norm Kushins, Kurt Gehring, Al Thomas, Pete Marks, Doug Klyse, Coach Thomson. Rounding out the first five were Paul Hulgan, a freshman, who should really be a good golfer in a couple of years, jon Warren, who doubled at golf and tennis, and Bill Timmer, a junior who has t, been on the team for three years.
