' At the close of the Iunior year the class had ordered their Senior sweaters. Breaking away from traditional red and white sweaters, this year's Senior donned a pearl-grey sweater with a red numeral block designed by Paula De Carlo. In November the Seniors with the highest scholastic standing took the Pepsi Cola Scholarship examinations. They were Wayne Kennedy, Iensen Young. Christine Christensen, Dick Mathews, Ed Gardner, Iulia Rice, Harold Hildebrant, and Kathleen Vereker. December came, and with it the photographer to take the long awaited Senior pictures. Proofs arrived about two weeks later and exclarnations were heard all over the campus. ln Ianuary several members of our class distinguished themselves by earn- ing Distinguished Service Medals. These students were Dorothy Cooper and Leo Andrade. Earning Honor Award Medals were Edwin Gardner, George Grasso, Lorraine Wicht, and Evelyn Affonso. In Ianuary we also ordered cards and announcements and new elections were held. lt didn't seem possible that half our Senior Year was gone! BACK ROW, left to right: M. Stein. I. Gulick, E. Gardner. They made the initial selection ot announcements for graduation. The standing committee combined with the juniors to bring about the success of the senior ball. They also did the planning for our graduation on the turf. The senior standing committee is composed of the class officers plus a number of other seniors who are chosen by the class president, chairman oi the committee. BACK ROW, leh to right: B. Ncxve, L. EVELYN Al-'I-'ONSO DOROTHY COOPER LLOYD SMITH MOLLIE ANN STEIN BETTY ARNOLD JACKIE MILLER RAY REED THERESA STANALAND DOLORES ENGEN CAROL DE LA MONTANYA JAMES FRUSH WAVA POAGUE FRESI-IMAN YEAR On the opening day of school in September, l944, a mighty timid group of freshmen walked into the halls ofS.R.H.S.'I'hese freshmen turned out to be the largest frosh class in San Rafael's history and also the best. The annual Frosh Re- ception went over with a bang as did every other activity that we, as frosh, had anything to do with. Don Collins was S. B. Prexy for our first semester inside the walls. The Varsity Football team brought home a championship and topped it off by beating Tam 20 to 12. We proved that we were the best class in school by win- ning a war bond drive contest. We benefited from the contest by winning the 585.00 first prize. With the help of Mr. Tardy, Dot Simon, and Dot Cooper, we printed our own frosh newspaper, the Green Pea. During our frosh year San Rafael lost its beloved Major Cuffe. An assembly was held in his honor and all students wishing to attend his funeral were excused from school. Three new organizations were formed. The Nu Beta Sigma or Music Club, the Rally Committee, and the Yell Leaders' School. Bill Baglietto was S. B. Prexy during the spring semester. The C track team, composed of frosh, came in second place in the N. B. L. SOPHOMORE YEAR It was a very different group of students who started their sophomore year from those that had begun their freshman year, meek and timid. All timidness had been replaced by bold confidence. Maybe you remember Nave, Sabbatini 6 Co. or better yet those twin terrors oi the halls, Harry Thorn- ton and Bob Thorsen! Franco Guidici was S. B. Prexy during the fall semester. The Varsity Football team took second place in the N. B. I.. and whipped Tam 14 to 6. Leo Andrade was elected class. prexy and held the office for both semesters. The Sophomore Class paper, the Sophomore Buzz, was edited by Elmer Swanton, who did a grand job. A hayride to McNears Beach was held in order that we might enjoy the money we earned as frosh, selling war bonds. MP5 SENIOR CLASS We did all right in collecting old clothes in a drive to help the people of Europe. Dick Caletti was Student Body Prexy in the spring semester. We sold candy in the cafeteria in order to make some money for the class treasury. Everybody remembers the horrible results of the various club initiationsg especially the scalped members of the Sportsmen. During the spring we had a small-pox scare and all the students were vaccinated. We came in first in the San Rafael City School Bond Drive contest. The bond issue was passed. Our mighty mite C track team brought home a track championship from the N. B. L. held at St. Helena. Those getting gold track shoes were: Rich Nave, Frank Sabbatini, Harry Thornton, Buck Azevedo, Orson Dee, and Bob Weber. JUNIOR YEAR Our junior year started off with an almost all-junior par- ticipation on the B football team and won the N.B.L. cham- pionship. Our Varsity team, after going through an extremely bad year, ended the season in grand style, trouncing Tam for the seventh straight year, with a score of 12 to 7. Rich Guidici was Student Body Prexy for the fall semester. Don Walling led us as Iunior Prexy during the fall semes- ter. Mr. Gulick was appointed adviser to the junior class, to continue as such through our senior year. Our fall semester was a sad one, in that we lost Mr. James Haynes, a teacher whom everyone liked and admired, and two of our fellow classmates, Iim Hurt and Iack West, both through automobile accidents. We helped in raising funds for the Searchlight by selling magazine, subscriptions. Dave Ford was elected Student Body prexy for the spring semester. We thought him to be one of our best and wittiest prexys in our school's history. For the spring semester, Frank Fradelizio was elected to lead us. Our senior sweaters arrived, pearl-grey and red, with a '48 block. At the annual Barn Dance, sponsored by the Ra Ravas, a red model T was given as the door prize. Dick Mathews, a prominent junior, won the N.B.L. tennis singles championship. HISTORY ' '9- Under the direction of Dave Ford, our student body Con- stitution was revamped and brought up to date. Dave created a new student body office called the Commissioner of Social Affairs whose duty was to see that there was always some- thing doing socially. Millard Everhart was appointed first commissioner. The Ra Ravas went on a weekend snow trip to Soda Springs. After the trip was over, there were a few girls seen limping around the halls. During the course of the year, the girls voted to do away with uniform sweaters and to wear colored sweaters. Early in Iune, the Iunior-Senior Prom was given by the juniors. lt was held in the gym and was entitled Prom in Pastel. SENIOR YEAR When school opened on that eventful day in September. l947, we found the student body under the able leadership of President Rich Nave. Our student body started operating un- der the new 1947 Constitution. Under this Constitution, the Student Council, a body composed of the student body officers and each of the class presidents, is the main governing body, the senate taking second place. So far, we think this new sys- tem has worked well. George Grasso made a very capable senior class presi- dent in the fall. A noon dance was held by the class to boost its treasury funds. The end of a favorable football season saw the valiant Bulldogs go down fighting before the league-leading Tam ln- diansg our first loss to Tarn in seven years. The final score of the massacre was Tam 32, San Rafael 7. The Tam-San Rafael Inter-School Relations Committee was formed and drew up a Constitution, with the purpose in view of bettering relations between the two schools, and to provide money to pay for damages to either school incurred in the past. The Tam-San Rafael Exchange Dance held the night following the Big Game was one of the projects sponsored by the committee. Eight seniors were chosen to take the Pepsi-Cola Scholar- ship examination in December. Those chosen were: Christine Christensen, Ed Gardner, Harold Hildebrant, Wayne Ken' nedy, Dick Mathews, Iulia Rice, Kathleen Vereker, and len' sen Young. The Block SR was reorganized through the efforts of Mr. Miller. Don Walling was elected prexy. In December, eight representatives of our student body went to Santa Rosa for the North Bay League meeting that was held there. The class of '49 decided to have green and white as their senior colors. Christmas was saddened as far as San Rafael High School was concerned, for on that day our beloved gym custodian, Mr. Ray Hill, passed on. ln Ianuary the Sportsmen started the leap year off right with a turn-about dance. Lloyd Smith was elected spring student body 'president after a hotly contested election which the student body de- cided was run off illegally. A re-election was held, and the results were almost identical with the first results. The best dance of the year, at this writing, was the annual formal Cotton Ball, mutually sponsored by the Ra Ravas and the Les Couts, and held at Masonic Hall. Ed Gardner was elected president of the senior class for the spring semester. Our B basketball team won the undisputed champion ship of the North Bay League. The championship first string was composed of the following seniors: Frank Sabbatini, Iacf: Vallee, Rich Nave, Leo Andrade, and Charlie Huddleston. A Cleanup Committee was formed to improve our grounds. A panel discussion that turned into a debate was held be- fore the student body twice on the question: ls a student court necessary in San Rafael High School: and, if so, how will it work? Those participating in it were: Student Body President Lloyd Smith, chairman: proponents: Ed Gardner, Wanda Dun- can, and lane Shields: opponents: Clyde Bradley, Bruno Fran- chetti, and Ray Reed. On Monday, March 15, the halls of S.R.H.S. were nearly deserted as a great majority of the students went to San Francisco to see the Freedom Train. The Iunior-Senior Ball was given under the auspices of the San Rafael High School P.-T.A. Bill Hunt, Iunior prexy, and Ed Gardner, Senior prexy, were general chairmen for the ball. Our Senior Class, differing from all previous senior classes, will be the first class to graduate on the turf. We leave with the threat of the draft and the possibility of war hanging over our heads. To you, the new up-and-coming seniors, we leave the re' sponsibility of holding up the reputation of S.R.H.S. and we wish you the best of luck. lf you follow in our footsteps, you can't miss! ln spite of our being glad to graduate, we leave ye olde institution with lumps in our throats and aches in our hearts. The other officers were: Delos Iones, boys' vice-presidenty Muriel Cunningham, girls' vice-president: Dick Reece, treasurerp Eldean Hazelton, secretaryp and Marion Dee, yell leader. The first meeting of the fall semester was called to discuss Senior class sweaters. Representatives of Albert's Department Store were present with sam- ples. Colors and costs were discussed. Afterwards a vote was taken and green sweaters were decided upon. The sweaters, which arrived a few weeks later, were the highlight of the fall semester. The officers did a fine job at representing the junior class in the school. SPRING The junior class started off the spring semester as customary by electing officers. Bill Hunt was the class' choice for president. In order to raise sufficient funds for the class' future activities, and with inten- tions of purchasing a memorial for Mr. Hill, the class sponsored a fun-night. This fun-night took place in both of the high schools' gyms and consisted of dancing, having a good time, and playing games such as ping pong, bingo, cards.and other games. The main activity undertaken by the junior class this year was, of course, the Iunior-Senior Prom. The plans for the prom were planned and carried out by the Iunior and Senior Standing Committees and were conducted under the auspices of the P.-T.A. It was and has always been a huge success. The junior class is greatly indebted to Miss Bolton, our adviser' for the splen- did job she has done in helping us to carry out our activities. BACK ROW, leit to right: H. Marsh. C. Lowney, D. FALL On Ianuary 26, we elected spring officers. Ioe Serna was chosen as president. As soon as representatives were elected, sophomore council meetings were held. As a means of increasing our treasury, we decided to have cake sales. Plans are being made for a class party as soon as our treasury is large enough. As always, the sophomore class will leave its mark in spring athletics with members participating in baseball, track, and tennis. y Again this semester, many of our classmates have been outstanding in the Scholarship Society and on the honor roll. SPRING The sophomore class started the fall semester with Clyde Bradley as prexy. Under C1yde's able leadership, and the advisorship of Mr. Day, the class was organized and regular meetings held. The plans for the sophomore sponsored talent show were dropped due to con- flicting activities. Shortly before Christmas, a nameless paper was published under the editorship of Shirley Patrick. As the result of a contest it was named Wise Fool which is the literal meaning of Sophomore. The class participated actively in athletics and scholarship, with twenty-one on the football teams andseven on the Varsity or Lightweight basketball teams. ESTES Activity Pt. Sec. Comm. ci Assemblies Adviser STUDENT BODY The fall Senate was headed by our Stu- dent Body President, Rich Nave. The 32 senators were elected by their first period classes. The student body officers and the four class presidents made up the rest of the membership. The Senate is an organization that dis- cusses problems that concern the student body, and then submit their ideas to the Student Council, but they have no vote in student body affairs except on amend- ments. Starting off the year, Ed. Gardner intro- duced an amendment to the Constitution, restricting the use of school colors to ath- letes only. Discussion on this amendment carried over until the spring semester when it was voted on and passed by the student body. Among the more important problems discussed were: the Freshmen Reception, Old Rag Drive, Student Body Finances, the selling of magazine subscriptions, the Red 'N' White, and the Senate picture for the Searchlight. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The students of the Music Department of San Rafael High School have been very active in school events this year. They have participated in assemblies, given concerts for the public, sung in the halls at Christmas and journeyed to San Francisco to give a Christmas concert there. This year, May 22, 1948, they will sponsor and participate in the annual Bay Counties Spring Music Festival. This festival will be held on our football turf. Twenty high schools will participate in this big affair, and we expect nearly 800 students to attend. For their hard work all year, We have a beach party planned sometime in May for the whole department. At the end of the year is graduation, at which time most of the music depart- ment periorms. When September rolls around again, well all be anxious to return and pick up where we left off, to make our Music Department bigger and better than it has ever been before. SMITH Coach BASKETBALL The first practice was called by coach Robert Smith, Thursday, September 9, 1947, with a turn- out of 33 boys tor the casaba season. After several weeks of practice on fundamentals and passing drills, we played our first practice game with last year's class C basketball team, losing by two points. With this start and several more practice games, we entered league competition against Santa Rosa, Analy, Tamalpais, and Petaluma. We lost two heartbreakers to Santa Rosa and Analy. However, We beat Petaluma and our traditional rival, Tamalpais, by a score of 23-18. Carl Wehrli did a fine job as our manager. Ierry Miller was elected captain and was high point man for the season with 56 points. Runner-up was lim Vickers with 27 points. The team that started in most of our league games included: lim Vickers, Ken Kopp, Ierry Miller, Herb West, Bob Le Fevre, Tom Cagwin, Bob Soldavini, lohn Hurt, Iohn Villa, and Ed Williams. The season ended successfully with our victory over Tarnalpais. -41 BACK ROW, lelt to right: C. Wehrli, R. Agusto, I. Villa, T. Cagwin, R. Cerutti, E. Williams, I. Blaqg, Coach R. Smith. A minor sport that is fast becoming a favorite with a lot of the students of San Rafael High School is tennis. A lot of new faces have appeared on the courts this year to try out for the squad, but though some didn't make it, they had fun competing among themselves and with some of the so-called gun- ners of the team. The team suffered a real lolow this spring when its N.B.L. first single champ, Dick Mathews, moved away. Many of the members of the team looked with greedy eyes toward that position, but it looks as though Wally Steele will be filling Dick's shoes this season. The tentative lineup for the rest of the squad is: Sheriden Cannaday at second singles and Lloyd Smith at third with Don Bertucci and Allen Hoffman at first doubles, and Harold Hilderbrant and Don Ronsheimer at second doubles. The rest of the squad consists of Gordon Blumenfeld, Kenneth Money, De Los Iones, Wayne Kennedy, lack Par- kins and lack Stevins. Coach Hines says that what the team lacks in skill and experience they make up in sportsman- ship. They take a win as though they were used to it, and a loss like men. HAROLD HILDEBRANT Co-Captain. Yes, because of a little precipitation, the SR. ball players were forced to postpone their first two league tilts. The 1948 pastimers will long remember this year by the wet diamond and games being postponed because of the rainy weather. At the time that this was written the varsity hadn't played a league game, but with seven out of nine first stringers returning from the 1947 squad, the season's outlook was pretty good. Coach Miller had the makings of a strong ball club when Dick Levy, George Grasso, Leo Andrade Ccaptainif Bob Schilling, Bill Russell, lim Baxter, and Gordon Quilici Call part of the 1947 tearnl, turned out for the first practice. With Bob Thomas, Don Azevedo, Ted Fahrner, and others filling in the vacant places. San Rafael looked like a sure bet for other N.B.L. contenders to wrestle with for the league championship. This year's exhibitions featured springboard, trampo- line, and ground tumbling, besides contests in wrestling, boxing, and rope climbing. The show provided spectacular entertain- ment for all, as well as raising funds for the spring snow trip. The club also presented a springboard exhibition at Forest Knolls and a trampoline act at an Optimist Club show. Two of the club's members also participated in a trampoline act along with the former world champion tumbler. The annual snow trip took place early in March at the famous Sugar Bowl in the Sierras.
