' FALL lhe junior class. during the year 1945-46, demonstrated to the student body just how capable they were as leaders in student body activities as compared with the other classes. For the first time. class officers were elected in the fall of '-15. Under their president, Charles Richesin. the juniors started a treasury for themselves through the sale of ice cream and coke concessions at the basketball games. SPRING Bob Duncan. a recognized leader in school politics, as president of his class lor the spring semester. concentrated on organizing the juniors as the top class and getting more co-operation from its members. lihe class participated in all school affairs, putting on skits for rallies, competing in XV:tr Bond sales and sports events and taking second place in the clothes drive. Mr. Uresia, class advisor. has been working with the class leaders toward the improvement and reorganilation of class activities with the backing of approximately 170 juniors. The juniors will complete their schedule of activities for this year with the sponsoring of the Senior-junior Prom on june 7. .-X preview ol' the future seniors reveals a high-spirited. friendly class which should show the school some firstfrate sports activity next year along with a fine school spirit. The first group action occurred as a result of the class's spirit as freshmen. We won a War Bond selling contest then and were granted 558500. As we had worked hard on the contest and had been told we could spend the money for our own entertainment, the class desired to spend the money accordingly. An able minority of the class thought that we should save this money, either to accumulate a junior fund to take care of expenses then or to go toward the Senior Class Gift. The majority decided. however. that the V proceeds should be used for a hayride which only sophomores could attend. SPRING The fall officers were retained for the spring semester because of the short duration of their fall term office. The first spring class meeting brought about the grouping of committees. The duties of these committees ranged from the sale of candy in the cafeteria to raise a class fund to the planning of a sophomore assembly. The class presented a skit for the Tam game assembly and entered the clothing drive contest between classes. Unfortunately for our class's rating in the contest, two truckloads of clothing came in after the drive was officially over, due to a misunderstanding. Since sophomores are not eligible to hold Red 'N' VVhite staff offices, the class decided to organize and mimeograph its own class paper, The Sophomore Buzz. We hope that this experience will train us for Red 'N' White reporting jobs. FALL The freshman class of this year has been a very active organiration. A Freshman Council was elected, consisting of two representatives from each Democracy Nine Class, to draw up a conf stitution. The Social Committee, headed by the girls' vice-president, planned to give parties: while the Roundup Committee, formed and headed by the boys' vice-president, was to provide entertainment for the freshmen when the other clubs were having their meetings. The traditional freshman paper. The Green Pea. was again organized with Bill Reece filling the joh of editor. 'There were several WCdI1CSdLlj' roundups and one big, successful noon dance, followed hy the clothing drive for Europe. The freshmen challenged the rest of the classes. The contest was a long. hard fight, but having won, the freshmen went out and scoured the town for clothes. To end the fall semester, a hig party was given. The turnout was very large and the party was really enjoyable. ' SPRING The spring officers have carried out some of their plans, although many of their plans are still in the planning stage. The Roundup Committee had its first class roundup at the showing of the ski picture in the High Sierra by Mr. Fred Hines. The committee has a variety of future roundups planned to provide entertainment every VVednesday for the rest of the year. As a whole, the freshmen have been very active, hoth in their classes and in other activities throughout the year, proving themselves to be ia good class and worthy of San Rafael High School. ln contrast to the other classes having hut one advisor, this class has had four to steer them through their very successful first year of high school with Mr. Paterson, head advisorg Miss New- comer. Under the capable leadership of the fall term officers. the boys have combined many worth while activities with munerous good times. to make the year a successful one. iiarly in September they were called on by the Office of Civilian c- P, Defense to collect paper and tin for the war effort. They responded cy? by collecting an allytime record for the San Rafael area. l As their next activity, they assumed control of fire drills. SPRING The spring activities included election of officers and voting on applications for new members. ln past years it has been customary to limit membership to twenty, but this year it was decided to raise the limit to twenty-four. Next on the program came a snow trip to the Sierras: the place chosen for the excursion was Emigrant Cap. The weekend the boys had in the snow will never be forgotten so long as one remembers any real good times. Skiing, snowballing, and just an all-around lot ol' fun made this trip an overwhelming success. The next activity was the annual Sportsmcn's Frolicf' which was held on April 26. XVith those prize babies, Albanese, jones. 'l'ardy, Money and Miller, acting as headline performers, the show was a grand success. lt was generally regarded by the six hundred students who attended as the funniest stunt presented. 'l'he rest of the semester was taken up by selling refreshments at the baseball games and having a good time in general. The final outing was a trip to Santa Crux, enjoyed by the whole club. They felt themselves to be small and insignificant, not to mention green as they hunted for their classrooms in t-',' this massive edifice. Although Miss Flint, Miss Mitchell, and Mr. VVoelz had made their first . appearance with this class, they gave no outward signs of sharing this freshman complex. The idol of the female popu- g lation of this lowest of classes was the Student Body President, ' Jim Todt. -- Three days after the biggest Freshmen Reception in years on ' October 9, the Frosh pitched ....T. 1 in with the other classes to help J put the scrap drive over the L top. Two hundred and five tolns of scrap metal were collect- e il Our varsity football team defeated Richmond High for the first time in twenty years. Who will forget that memor- able event! On November 14 the Bulldogs beat the Indians of Tam., 3-0. The next night an exchange dance was held, one of the highlights of the social season. The following happenings were witnessed: Marilyn Money wearing the chevron which she had received four months after her birth. The Dean of W0m6ll, having taken a peep into the crystal ball and seeing Marilyn earning it, had awarded it to her then, being assured that she would win the chevron. An explosion had rocked the building, believe it or not, but Mr. Paterson had taken over lNIr. Estes' Chemistry Class on that particular day. Physiology and the much discussed seventh period were added to the cirriculum. Shirley Criffeth, first girl prexy in years, took over the job of student body president. The class was not found to be lacking in intelligence. for in the first honor roll Franco Ciudici and Diane Gardiner won thirteen points with Ron Potter close be- hind. ff ln the war bond drive that commemorated Decem- ber 7 of the year before, the Frosh class led, buying S93 worth of bonds. VVc remem- ber. too, Jess Field, a Frosh then, but now in the Nler- chant Marines, leading the class in the singing of Up and Down. And who does- n't remember the blackout drills and the windows of the center hall painted black? OUR SOPIIOAIORE YEAR-I943-I9-I4 The wise and the knowing have said that the sopho- more year in high school and college is the one least remem- bered in after years. This appears to be our plight as our book of memories has little to record during the nine months of our sophomore year. VVe do remember, however, our fall Student Body Presi- dent, john Rossi, his red hair and his antics. This was the year before the war ended, with air raid drills and the classes trouping out to hide in scheduled stations. Fortunately for us, there were no enemy planes overhead. In review now. we dare say that these make-believe attacks which scattered us to the cover of the hills appeared as a frolic to most of us then. There were many lasts in this year. ' ' Tania And lastly, the celebration of Hick's Day was held for the last time. In November we beat Tam and we carried off the honors against Tam. in a bond and stamp drive soon afterwards. Early in the fall the Schol- arship Society started selling pop and ice cream at the foot- ball games to earn money to- ward the scholarships they were to sponsor in the spring. Many members of the then sophomore class were members of this society and they pitch- ed in with vim to raise the sum required. The last mid-term gradua- tion class donned caps and gown in March to receive their diplomas. In celebration, these departing friends were given the Sweetheart Prom. The annual Barn Dance, sponsored by the Ra Ravas, was given in April amid much music, hay and dancing. The month of May was full of social activity, including the Mothers' Tea, the last social event of the season. The Les Couturieres gave a Cotton Ball, particularly remembered for 1'7Q , . the amount of cotton visible 'N ,,' I on the dance floor. ' ' OUR JUNIOR YEAR-1944-19-45 Gaining confidence as upper classmen, wc, returning as juniors, welcomed the new Student Body President, Don Collins. This year our Varsity Bulldogs formed a well-knit team which fought its way through five straight winnings and on November I5 won the N.B.L. Championship by defeating Vallejo, I3-6. It was the first time since 1937 that the coveted gold footballs had returned to San Rafael High. Tam proved to be a good loser and sponsored the ex- change dance. The Les Couturieres and Ra Ravas gave the football dinner a few weeks later. Mr. MacChesney became advisor of the Red 'N' White and Pat VVatfield, editor, with Sheila McKinney, co-editor. The paper flourished and turned out some pretty good stuff. The Rally Committee was again reformed and the following juniors were proud to be among the enrollees: blarilyn bloney, Ramona Vincilione, Ola Hayden, Hank VVadlow, Dick Caletti, Patricia Boules and Diane Gardiner. Mr. VVoelz acted as advisor and Hank Wadlow, in the capacity of head yell leader, was chairman of the group until a consti- tution was drawn up. To end their crowded first Semester, the Les Couturieres and Ra Ravas combined to hold their annual formal in the gynasium on February 10. They called it A journey to ai Star, and from all the reports of those juniors who attended this formal, it lived up to its name. During the spring semester the Canteen became an accomplished fact, and the students flocked to it in droves. ln February the Sportsmen showed that they could use their brawn for other than lust athletic events. Outside of school time they participated in the Paper Drive. They made a record showing. The Male Chorus tnade its initial appearance on March 23 in an all music assembly. l7ortv-eight boys had signed up for this seventh period activity. Feeling that the education of yell leaders in the school was too hit-or-miss, a yell lead- er school was started simul- of the Rally Committee. Although ,lim Cilmartin was only on the Bullpup basket- ball team in those days, he even then distinguished himself as a high point man. Mrs. Lorenlen. Mrs. Ciampaoli. Mr. Dresia and Mr. Culick joined the teaching force in our senior year. At the beginning of this year, as in the previous year, we all took the Iowa State Tests for measuring mental apti tule. As the third day of the test ended, we felt that our heads were beginning to bulge, and many of us were heartbroken over the expos- ure of our ignorance in certain fields of learning. The two major girls' clubs sponsored the annual football dinner and the so-called Snow Ball formal which was given at the Ross Com- munity llouse in February. This 'was one of the two formals of the year which gave everyone a chance to get really prettied up. XVith the spring election of new student body officers. Dick Calctti and Franco Ciudici changed places. Dick becoming prexy of the sill- dent bo-ly and Franco, of the senior class. There was some real competition in the clothing drive conducted in the spring semester. The l:rosli challenged the three other classes. They made good their wager. defeating Une of the greatest shocks to the student body, and certainly the greatest tragedy in our junior year, was the untimely death of Major Cuffe. llc seemed a part of the school. and his going was felt with immeasurable sorrow. School was adjourned the morning of the funeral so that all could attend. VVe all knew that no one could replace the lk1aior in our affections. The first meeting of the United Nations was held in San Francisco during May. Some of the students were asked to usher. Also, the mem- bers of the Red 'N' VVhite all the other classes. ln the spring of this year, the Dean of Cirls,'h1rs. Nlurrav, feeling that perhaps the girls were tired of unilorins angl would like to vote them out, gave a two-weeks' trial civilian day period. At the end ol that period the girls, bv a vote of 181 to 100. expressed their desire to retain the uniform. Likewise, colored sweaters was put up for a vote by the girls two weeks later. The last social function for the seniors included the Klothers' Tea, given by the Girls' League: the Jamboree. 1-ZIVCH bv the Rally Committee. and the Senior Ball. THE SENIOR YEAR-1945-1946 Perhaps the happiest amo ng the students who returned to school in September of 1945 were the new members of the senior class. Franco Giudici took over the presidency of the student body with able officers assisting him. Although class organization had been discussed the year before, classes were not organized until this year. Each class elected its officers early in the semester, and the seniors chose Dick Caletti to lead them. A number of league games were won by our varsity Page Seventy-two director, Vklarren Dohemann and the club advisors, Mrs. Giam- paoli and Mr. Vkloelz. had I charge of the Jamboree. On june 14 the class of '-16. donning caps and gowns. re- ceived the coveted diploma. pass- ing through the portals of San Rafael High School for the last time. ln leaving they pass on the traditions and privileges ac- corded to seniors to the mem- bers of this year's junior class and ask them to wear that halo with the same rever- ence and good will as the past and present members of the senior class have done. li lf A ll, - Q W.
