What Makes a Pirate Tick? Enthusiasm and sportsmanship are non secret ingredients of our Products What Makes A Pirate Tuck Pirates led an enriched life In 1958 1959 Each year the old routine varies Always something new is added Our student Body co operated with the Amencan Field Servlce In our efforts to be part of better re lations with Foreign countries Barbara Goetz from Berlin our first exchange student was enrolled Pirate candidates for next summer abroad were Susan Brown Janice Elnch Linda Richter and John Weld New York headquarters of Amencan Field Service chose Susan Brown for our lucky traveler March 10 Ataloa a nationally known Chickasaw Indian gave a benefit performance of American Indian folklore and legends to help finance two of our students abroad next year 1959 sprung saw new bleachers built on Dodson Field a great savings to the Student Treasury as no longer must hugh rents be paid for the use of Daniels Field One way traffic another change mldyear was inevitable because of increased enrollment 1 850 in February Nine Pirates featured on Spotllght on Youth February 18 were Bull Brown B12 class president Barbara Dela Cruz Knughtette president Clifford Dudley Knight president Catherine Gasper A12 Judge A12 class vlce president Easter Vacation began a little early this year for 200 flu stricken Pirates Three mlld epidemics struck here at Plrateland but that didnt stop the Girls League from sponsoring the box social Daddy Round up April 8 the first and destined to acquaint the fathers of our gurls with our school and teachers Never underestimate the power of a woman S 59 Janice Ong proved It could be done when she became the first gurl president to lead our Student Body this sprung The newly organized clubs this year included the -5 , Y' - 6 ' . xr v 1. Pep Club, which cheered Jim Zar, chosen Marine League football Co-Player of the Year. Last fall, under the sponsorship of Mr. Whelan tennis enthusi- asts formed the Tennis Club. They kept in shape and had fun on the cement courts at nearby Daniels Field. The Computers' Club, Mr.'Slotten's math wizards, worked out a fantastic problem which was sub- mitted to an IBM 7-400 Computer iElectric brain, to you.l Pirates were generous, as in past years. We col- lected 3174 cans of food to help our needy at Christmas. We donated 5180.12 to the March of Dimes, 1757. of our individual goal. Our Product iPiratesl really comes through. Mr. Farnham congratulates Carol l5anta Clausl Thomas who reported the grand total ot 3174 cans for the Christmas Can Drive. Mr. Richard Parker, English teacher who transferred to Harbor Junior College midyear, weathered the Surprise Party given him by the senior girls his last day here. In February sixty art students visited the Van Gogh show at the los Angeles County Museum.
