The Fisherman's Fiesta and the bless- ing of the fishing fleet follows a cen- tury-old tradition. Many of our stu- dents take part, helping decorate the boats for the parade, act as hosts on family boats, and mingle with others from our community in holiday festivi- ties. 50,000 out-of-towners came to the Fiesta last fall. All roads lead Our cheerleaders lead off with a S-S- SAN P-P-PED D-D-RO for the start of the new Harbor Freeway, another road to San Pedro, created by popular de- mand. JJQ .wc -sto-.'2'I'l'2':'Cf. 4. Thousands of flags, many colored, flut- tered gaily beside Fisherman's Wharf. The theme was Circus Time. To San Pedro ! ! and why not? Who has a bigger, better Jack O' Lan- terns? Each October, Union Oil assigns two men to paint one of their tanks nearest the Gaffey Street entrance to San Pedro. It takes two weeks for these men to cover this gigantic pump- kin with brilliant orange paint. Black and white intensifies his broad grin. Through-traffic on Anaheim and High- way lO'l pass before his smile, even though they by-pass our peninsula. Members of the Annual Staff who ar- ranged for this picture were impressed by the many precautions to ensure complete safety. They had to get spe- cial permission, and an executive to escort the group through the gates, up the road into the tank farm. Here not even the Strobe light could be used. Ordinary flash attachments were not allowed inside the gate. Who DOES have a bigger, better Jack O' Lantern? PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education helps keep our Pirates healthy. It teaches them responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership. Girls enioy games of basketball, baseball, and volleyball in our California sunshine. Individual sports reserved for seniors are shuffle-board, horse- shoes, pingpong and archery. Modern Dance class teaches control and gracefulness, and improves posture. Students create and present their own dance routines. Swimming in a special class, held daily at the YMCA downtown. Swimming is a re- quirement for graduation. Boys Physical Education offers such sports as foot- ball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, softball, track and field, swimming and gymnastics. All girls learn many types of games - individual as well as group. Badminton one ot many, is shown here. We learn while playing lYe have home skills and road skills DRIVERS EDUCATION Drivers Education is a state requirement. Students study traffic- laws, safety meas- ures, care and operation of a car, and how to be better pedestrians as well as learning to be good drivers. After this ten-week course has been completed, the student may take Drivers Training. This is an eighteen-hour course offering the stu- dent the experience of actual driving. The Board of Education provides a dual-control car for this course. Students who have completed Drivers Training successfully are awarded an identification card that en- titles them to a discount on insurance rates. HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics department offers a well-rounded course in classes such as Clothing, Foods, Nutrition, Home Living, Child Care, Personal and Family Arts. It further provides varied opportunities to share in school life. In this department we set tables and pre- pare food for special teas and luncheons, select, prepare, repair, launder, and store costumes for school affairs, and make and keep crisp all the aprons worn in our Foods classes. This department provides other school services too: ice cubes for the Health De- partment, first aid to the loose button, or a rip or tear, and refrigerator storage for science classes for eyes, tongues, yes, even brains used in experiments. Our varied class room activities are fun. left: Drivers Education class members are examining themselves. They hope to become good, sane drivers. Right: This is the way to bake a cake - or in this case, cookies. The Foods closses help with many teas and social occasions in school. tfthti MODERN DANCE Modern Dance students bring rhythm, verve, color and life to our programs. The Christmas program featured the var- ious costumes and traditions of our foreign heritage in San Pedro. The Home Econom- ics Departmen helped with costumes. Social Studies concerns people and their relationships with others. In Economics students learn how people solve their problems of living by trade, business, banking, credit. Civics and government are studied in Po- litical Science. This concerns methods by which people regulate and control their relationships through government. Student Leadership enters into this field, pupils study and practice government. History explains the present by revealing affairs of the past. World Problems in- cludes study of political and economic geography. Senior Problems concern eco- nomic and social problems of marriage., self-adiustment, and careers. U MA, A student who completes these courses em- erges a better citizen, able to converse in- telligently about world affairs and to vote for the bettermen of himself and his coun- try. He is a better citizen for his awareness of problems existing today. He learns ways to meet, solve, or cope with these problems. We have opportunity Group I. A year of one of these classes is required by all colleges. Physics prepares a student for the mechanical side of sciences and gives him a basic understanding of laboratory process. lt is essential for college engi- neering students as it is introductory to all engineering subiects. Chemistry is also re- quired for engineering, or college science maiors. Chemical processes learned here apply even to everyday life. Physiology is the study of the structure and functions ofthe human body. Pupils learn about themselves and their health. Stu- dents interested in medicine and related fields take this class. Life Science I and ll teaches the funda- mentals of Science and laboratory work. Students study such things as the P. C. Vortecella, digestion, and irrythrocytes. Life Science is required for all lOth grad- ers. Courses offered by the Mathematics De- partment are Industrial Math, l and 2, Basic Math, four semesters, Alegbra I-IV, and Geometry I, ll. We Learn How, Wh.ere and Why 48 Practical arts skills INDUSTRIAL ARTS A shop major must have 600 hours in a number of shops to complete the course. A student who takes a vocational maior must have l200 hours in one shop. When he graduates and applies for apprentice- ship rating, his 1200 hours apply on his apprenticeship term. Our shops are well- equipped with power machines. Students are very thoroughly taught the funda- mentals in handling these machines. Electric shop students learn how to make radois, transformers and do wiring. Wood- shop students learn the types and uses of wood, and make tables, lamps, desks for themselves. Print shop students learn the linotype, setting up a press and each week print the Fore 'n' Aft. Metal shop students make lamps, screw-drivers, hammers, chisels and punches. Machine Shop has a C-clamp as a first proiect. Students choose their other proiects. Drafting students learn lettering, blue printing, and mechanical and architectural drafting. Our welders in metal shop take extra precaution: left, larry Allen Harold Crudupt, and Jimmy Bunn. lower.
