n 1984, America lost the America's Cup. New Zealand took it away from Captain Dennis Connor, after a 10-year winning streak by the U.S. Some people called the New Zealand boat, the Kiwi Magic, a fiberglass Cinderella because it was not made of the traditional wood. ln 1987, Dennis Connor and his crew took back the Cup, which was being held in New Zealand. The loss has made the America's Cup more popular than the win, stated the Captain in 1984. But now, the retaliation has won fame forthe next race to be held in San Diego in 1991. 66Happ 50th Golden Gate. 1 aw 178 hat I The World Happened? 1 undreds of thousands of people flocked to the 50th birthday ofthe Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran- cisco. The people celebrated all day. At one point, there were so many people on the bridge, that the bridge buckled under the weight. The Golden Gate is the second longest bridge in the world. lt connects San Fran- cisco with Marin County. The bridge opened in 1937. lt is 4,200 feet long. -2 was the score for the World Series. The Minnesota Twins won over the Saint Louis Cardinals. No longer are the Twins called the l'Twinkies. The team players are now named Sweet Music, Kirby, Herbie Wrench, Dr. Crank, Groovie, Lombo, Gags, Buck-ninety, Bruno, the Dutch- man, The Panamanian Express, and the Teminator. The second inning ended with the Cardinals getting two runs off of Sweet QViolaJ Music. In the next six innings the Twins were invincible. The players struck because they wanted to become free agents. This means they want to choose for themselves to which team they want to be traded. The striking players called them- selves the SFL fStrike Football Leagu. Some people called it the Scab Football League. The players struck after the Jets- Patriots game. It was on September 21.
