VaIS1ty And J Boys Wrestllng Stands Tall 'fffwi' The goal of the boy s varsity wrestling team was to make it to the State finals Did that say boy's' '7 That s no longer the case You see the school board changed the rules and now allow girls to Join the teams At San Pasqual three girls tried out but one way or another did not get on the team Our team wrestled other teams with female mem bers but not one on one so far They anticipate this with very mixed feelings Coach Ron Cherkins led them on and both the varsity and Junior varsity teams kept up past performance records although they were always aim mg a little bit higher There were a lot of new people out this year, but the varsity d1d win two consecutive dual matches in a row, something they haven t done in a long time The Junior varsity and varsity teams may not have gone to the State Finals, but the upcomlng years of fe l males may make history VarSlty Boys Wrest11ng Carlsbad San Marcos El Cayon Oceanside Ramona awww WL rs ssssfs ssrss .,ss . This year, Coach Cherkins wanted to get kids interested in his sport, wrestling, and what better place to start than with the freshmen? He wanted wrestling to be pop- ular like other sports. The first step was encouragement. Coach Cherkins came from Escondido High School to hustle the fighting Eagles to a CIF victory. This year, frosh wrestling went up against their toughest adversary, Escondido, and, although they didn't do so well, the experience taught them and they got tougher. The team went to a tournament sponsored by and staged at Poway High School and placed tenth out of 16. Joshua Allen and Tom Winter placed third in the 147 class. Coach Cherkins inspired his team to dedicate individuals to learn and enjoy it at the same time. C A.
