Boys S P 4 1 2 0 1 San Dieguito 1 0 6 3 2 3 ' 0 2 3 4 2 1 0 10 1 Coach Dan Shedd went from playing on SPHSls soccer teams for four years to the assistant varsity coach to this year's Junior Varsity boy's soccer coach. His team fought its way to the top and had a super season. Outstanding players were many, including Humberto Aguirre, Matt Combe, Jon Savin, Jim Hawkins, and Scott Lauman who was cut off early with a knee injury. The team has a lot of heart, said Coach Shedd in an early interview, K'that's the reason they've kept on winning. And they never give up.'l A win over Ramo- na was what they needed at the time, when they were second in the league and looking at next Friday's decisive game against the Bulldogs. The term HDribblers die was heard on the prac- tice field many times, as Coach Shedd worked his members to be a team, not individuals. Passing got worked on, too. By the end of the season, the team was greatly improved, and there are opti- mistic outlooks to next year's varsity team. A. Jon Savin gives his opponent a foot- lock: B. Carmel Poway Ramona San Dieguito Torrey Pines Freshmen Boys S.P. 3 0 5 1 3 1 3 1 3 3 1 5 1 6 Fifth year Coach Web Cate led the Freshman Boy's Soccer team through good times this year. Their season was a roller- coaster one, with them going from first to second and strug- gling back towards first again in league placing. Memorable games and memorable names went together, such as the game against Mt. Carmel when Stew- art Smith scored three goals in the end of the fourth to tie up the game 4-4. Other noteworthy team members were Mike Mor- tensen, Brad Perry, and Jeorge Vega. The freshman team had to work in passing the ball harder and faster and Coach Cate's cry of Put a little mus- tard on it! was a familiar sound. It seems they heard it, because although the freshmen weren't sure of any high expec- tations, they became a leading contender for the league title. A.
