This year they were led by Ab bie Thompson, Tammy Karr and Yolanda Torres. What made the team work was their attitude of running with and for the group. The Mt. SAC races were a moment to remember as the our Junior Varsity team came in first. In traditional style, they won the league title for the sixth time in a row un defeated all year. Final stretches and a look of determi- nation combined with a sub- dued nervousness, and they head for the stating line. Heads bow .over blue and gold uni- forms as a small prayer is said, and last minute advice from the coach gives the girls a new kind of strength. They line up for the starter's gun. . . . And they're off! SPHS has come to race for yet another victory . . . In keeping with their season with a purpose, the girl's Cross Country Varsity team had an- other stellar season. Led by Kerry Panno and Alchera Cle- menshaw, the running Eagles defended their league title. The team went to the Kenny Re- gionals Invitational. Alchera Clemenshaw, coming in firstin the juniorfsenior unseated race, let the competition know that San Pasqual was not to go un- challenged. Under the coach's trained eyes, the team went from first place in the league for the seventh consecutive year to a CIF victory by the top ten girls: the third time in the past four years. Eagle Express ls Explosive This year's boy's Cross Country Var- sity and Junior Varsity teams had a season with a purpose. They dedi- cated themselves to capturing the league title in the memory of Fer- nando Vallina, a former runner at SPHS. Practice and their famous teamwork brought them to their goal. Senior Lance Hegerle, fresh- man Francis O'Neil, and junior Bret Wickham led the Varsity team up- wards. Enrique Fonseca and Glen Winters held their own in Junior Varsity. Along the way, members went up to the Kenny Regionals In- vitational in Los Angeles and ran against top runners from eleven western states. The competition was stiff, and the learning experience was good - they learned new techniques of water-balloon throwing and mid- night raids. By the end of the season, they'd tied in the league, and the top ten captured second at ClFg the high- est ever in our running history. Over- all, it was a terrific year.
