Lake .2 4' lrtistic Talents Phrive At SPHS Vleet Heilig llartyn Heilig had his first two periods in he same room this year: drawing and com- mercial art. One period later, he could be ound in crafts. Although he transferred to lan Pasqual in the middle of his sophomore 'ear from Canada, he has taken many art lasses. During that second semester, Heilig arned himself the Artist of the Year ,ward from our art instructor, Ms. Smith. He ays his family enjoys drawing, but he's the ,ne who has the real chance to become a rrofessional. He spent his spare time draw- ng cartoons, sketching, etc. for friends, en- ering a calendar contest with a drawing of a Ialifornia scene from a photograph he took, ind tried his creative hands on various irtwork. Heilig continues to look around for L favorite art form, and plans to be in ceram- cs and advanced art next year. He says most if his required classes are taken care of, so he :an afford this luxury. He looks up to the great Walt Disney and his world of cartoon characters. He gets inspirations and advice rom Disney's books, movies, etc. He would ike to major in art in college and sell some of mis work to his brother who owns a San Diego 'ar company. For now though, he's enjoying imself and expanding his talents at San asqual. if 4 0 , :gli 3. , . 'ul -.wr V .W - me .. if 1 fi W P wr lah Inu mf 57 3? Powell Dances Way Through High School Lharon Powell deserves some recognition for he past eleven years. Across the nation, he's taken ballet and dance and has stayed .etermined to enjoy what she likes most. Al- hough her grandmother was an outstanding eacher and dancer of ballet in New York, it was Powell's idea to start as a child. Since hen, sheis pirouetted her way up. Over this ear she danced in San Marcos, New West Ballet as Arabian, Spanish, Clara's mother, nd in the corps of the annual famed Nut- racker at Palomar, and performed for chools and nursing homes with her troupe. lhis sometimes meant six or more days of ehearsal a week, but she wou1dn't think of iving it up. Ballet is the best, said Powell, lt's traditional, disciplined, and when you fork hard for a goal, it gives a terrific sense if accomplishment. She admires all that rave gone on to be professionals. She enjoys latching performances as well, because she Lnows what hard work went behind each fell-done move. She can appreciate it more ,ecause of her experience. Although she'd ike to dance in college, she doesn't like the :lea of ballet as a career. So few make itg it sn't right for her. Powell may become a vet- rinarian, but isn't quite sure.
