Hawkins Dances All That Jazz llhis past year was the first at SPHS for Brazilian Rita Hawkins. She came to Amer- ca in the eighth grade and danced jazz on the lance team for two years at Orange Glen. Prom the beginning, it was obvious to the nstructor Mrs. Watkins, that she had talent. Vhen Hawkins moved and transferred to ian Pasqual, she was too late to join our own lance team and ended up still dancing with Jrange Glen's. This year, they performed for chools and brought in a large crowd for their pring show. Since she couldn't practice with he group, Hawkins choreographed her own olo dances. She jogged every morning and hen spent an hour or so picking the right nusic, creating moves, and rehearsing. She injoys jazz because it's so fast and fluid. Ballet is too slow, she said, and jazz has nappy movements. She goes to watch lances and tries to work new steps into her outine. Although she says she will really tart to dance in college, she'd like to major n foreign languages and become an inter- vreter. She's had three years of French, plans o take Spanish next year, and already peaks her native tongue, Portugese. Haw- :ins learned English only several years ago, rut speaks it like a pro. She would like to lance with both school's dance teams next 'ear. The future is limitless to a person with .mbition.
