x '-i Xi' yn 2 l L.' edication On Thursday, January 8, Noah S. Yoder, a member of San Mateo High School for over half a century, passed away. Pop Yoder, as he was fondly known, had come to our school in l90l as a student. l-le later trained for the teaching profession and ioined the faculty in l920, remaining as a member of the staff until retirement in l95l. Mr. Yoder continued on San Mateo High's district roll as a substitute until his recent death. Primarily a science and mathematics teacher, Mr. Yoder was quali- fied to instruct in other academic subiectsg and during his teaching career he coached tumbling, boxing, wrestling, and basketball. ln the latter sport his team won the Northern California Championship. Not only are the 2,000 students mourning him, but the administra- tion and faculty members of the district also feel his absence. His infinite patience and genuine interest in young people, as well as his co-opero- tion with everyone with whom he came in contact, will be missed. Therefore the students of SMHS wish to dedicate this year's Elm to the memory of our good friend, Noah S. Yoder.

Foreword October 4, l957. Americans hurried to work, cities began to buzz with activity, and people passively regarded satellites as small, heav- enly bodies revolving around Jupiter. Then, with a tremendous roar, powerful rockets thrust Sputnik l from the earth, and a new age was born. Headlines shouted the nevvs to a shocked world. The effect reached out and touched the classrooms of America. Education is asleep! people cried, and the youth ot America took a deep breath and sharpened their pencils. People now look torvvard to a day when man will escape the confines ot the Earth to explore the boundless realm of outer space. Amid the feelings of apprehension and unrest, we, at San Mateo High School, prepare for a tomorrow that will truly be CUT OF THIS WORLD. fx l . . ' I , - ---f X :X ,ugly tw ' g ,. g ' x . .
