STUDENT COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS This was San Mateo's best year ever because your Student Council did a good job rep- resenting you and working hard for you. This group consists of your elected Student Body Officers, their appointed Commissioners and your elected home room representatives. Work- ing together, the Student Council made this year the best ever at San Mateo High. Starting off the fall semester with a bang, under Bill Hardy, Student Body President, were Bob Foley and Pat Curley, who were Student Chairmen of the annual P. T.A. Member- ship Drive. Once again the Student Body came through with over 1, OOO P, T. A, memberships through their campaigning. And once again the P. T, A. presented the Student Body with 5200 toward the Student Lounge fund for their assistance in the membership drive. With this S200 and the rest of the Student Lounge fund, Pat Curley and Rosalie Hays set to work to really make something of the Student Lounge idea. For the first time definite plans were made and the Student Council accepted Pat's proposal for a temporary Student Lounge. The Student Body should next year enjoy a temporary Student Lounge in the Co-op. One of the most important developments this year was the formation of the Golden Key Society. Bob Hamrdla and his committee worked hard during the fall semester to write up the rules of the Society and develop a point system. At a special meeting on December 10, your Student Council accepted the Golden Key Society and thus, the year ends with many of your Seniors receiving their Golden Keys. Your Grounds Commission did an extra fine job this year. During the fall semester they devised a parking registration system and all cars which line Delaware and Beelevue were wearing parking stickers. There was a good clean-up campaign in the Fall and in the Spring plans for a hall clean-up campaign were formulated. This was the big year for the Rally Commission also! During football season, the Rally Commission and you students went all out. The Bearcat Boosters were formed this year and came wearing white to every game. The girl Boosters wore white middies every Friday. You had class competitive rallies for the first time, Rooters' buses to every game away from home, and thus tied Menlo -Atherton for the championship. You had the best Little- Big Game Rally ever, pretty Sherry O'Neill for Football Queen, the trophy on your side, and --once again you beat your cross-town rival, Burlingame, on Turkey Day. The Rally Com- mission inished up the year with two good Basketball Rallies and a super big Spring Rally. The Recreation Commission continued on with its noon intramural sports program. They held leagues in Football, Basketball, and Soccer. In the spring you elected Pete Merle to take over for Bill Hardy and quickly more be- gan to happen around the San Mateo campus through Student Council. Yes- your Student Council did it at last! The parking lot is now paved. Through the cooperation of your Student Council, Mr. Stewart and the higher-ups, San Mateo at last boasts of an ever wanted paved student parking lot. The Big Spring Carnival was the feature project of the Spring Semester. Howard Karr and Claire Sims were appointed Carnival Chairmen and their committee did a good job. Each of the clubs and groups in school sponsored a booth and the funds helped the Student Body Treasury greatly. This was your best carnival yet! Your Student Council also worked out and accepted a plan for a student Directory. This year's Seniors were left out but this is still another step in the work of your Student Council. Starting with the spring semester, Honor Study Hall was set up for those Juniors and Seniors who were accepted. Any upper classman could apply and those students who passed a faculty student screening were allowed to study in Room 8 and use the Library freely. Room 110 became the general Study Hall. The Dance Commission helped the A. B.S, and the Junior Class adapt to the Auditor- ium Stage for their annual dances since the gym was under repairs. The Art Commission worked extra hard this year with appropriate banners for every gpme. They did especially good jobs on the banners for all skates, noon-movies and dances a so. This was quite a year for all at San Mateo High. Many new and exciting ideas were brought to life from Bearcat Boosters to the Golden Key Society and all of the annual functions were better than ever from the Little-Big Game Rally to the Carnival. Both Pete and Bill should be congratulated on the way they led you, the Student Body, through San Mateo's best year ever! 13
