He's the spirit of San Mateo High! This has been a great year for Johnny. Johnny owes a lot to the faculty, who have helped him to obtain a little ed- ucation between his social activities. I don't think he realizes how much they help him with his activities, too. Johnny's teachers are really concerned with his success. Johnny Bearcat had the pleasure of taking part in a very successful stu- dent government at San Mateo. This year's student leaders accomplished many things for which San Mateo has been striving for many years. The student park- ing lot was paved, plans were set up for a student Lounge, a successful clean-up campaign was waged. Class officers and councils were extremely active this year. The Freshmen had their excellent Talent Show. The Sophomore Fun Nite was something to remember. The active Juniors had, in addition toabeau- tiful Prom, a skate. The Senior Ball, Grad Night, and Senior Skates were out- standing. The annual AGS spring formal and the ABS Dance, the first to be pre- sented on the auditorium stage, especially pleased Johnny. San Mateo has never seen rallies to equal this year's presentations. Competition between classes urgedJohnny and his fellow students to plan bigger and better rallies. And our spirit was almost unbelieveable! The entire PAL commended us on our fine sportsmanship and spirit. This enthusiasm was evi- dent in the wonderful carnival--Johnny really had fun there. San Mateo shone out in sports this year. Johnny will long remember that this was the year we beat Burlingame for the second year in a row. Frosh- Soph and Varsity teams ranked first in the PAL. Johnny was a member of the Bearcat Boosters, too. San Mateo had a well-organized, vociferous rooting section. This group, under the leadership of our cheerleaders and pom-pom girls, cheered our teams onto victory at every game. We didn't fall down in our winnings during the basketball season either. Our teams zipped through the PAL to come into second place. This was the year that wrestling first came to San Mateo as a league sport. Johnny was a staunch supporter of his swimming, baseball, track, and gymnastics squads, too. There are numerous clubs and organizations that appeal to Johnny and his friends. Several new organizations were organized this year. In addition to the popular Spanish, French, German, and Latin Clubs, Johnny's Italian friends now have a club of their own. The out-of-doors men joined the Fishing Fools, a hunting and fishing Club, The Golden Key Society, newly formed in 1955, is San Mateo's first hon- orary group for active citizenship. This promises to be one of the top organiz- ations and a well-earned reward for leaders in school affairs. Another honor- ary society, the California Scholarship Federation, was extremely active this year under the able guidance of their zealous officers and adviser. Johnny belonged to other active school clubs. The French Club presented its annual Christmas formal, La Vie en Rose. The Science and Math Club made several excursions to local places of scientific interest. Footlighters, the drama group, attended some of the best plays in San Francisco. The Junior Red Cross distinguished itself in its projects to help those in need. Johnny kept abreast of the news, thanks to the Hi Staff, who diligently published the school paper, and special acknowledgement goes to the Elm Staff, who made this annual possible. 1955 has been a wonderful year for Johnny. He received the full benefit of his student activities, government, and other affairs. Let's hope all the Johnny Bearcats to come will be as fortunate in their years at San Mateo. 5 lx , s. bv -. ,ga Q .,. 27,4 Aix bs i 1' sa ' 113 SQ V' . . g-i?Y'f??QQ5gj, , H ,, , , V ja? . COUNCIL F STUDENT COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS This was San Mateo's best year ever because your Student Council did a good job rep- resenting you and working hard for you. This group consists of your elected Student Body Officers, their appointed Commissioners and your elected home room representatives. Work- ing together, the Student Council made this year the best ever at San Mateo High. Starting off the fall semester with a bang, under Bill Hardy, Student Body President, were Bob Foley and Pat Curley, who were Student Chairmen of the annual P. T.A. Member- ship Drive. Once again the Student Body came through with over 1, OOO P, T. A, memberships through their campaigning. And once again the P. T, A. presented the Student Body with 5200 toward the Student Lounge fund for their assistance in the membership drive. With this S200 and the rest of the Student Lounge fund, Pat Curley and Rosalie Hays set to work to really make something of the Student Lounge idea. For the first time definite plans were made and the Student Council accepted Pat's proposal for a temporary Student Lounge. The Student Body should next year enjoy a temporary Student Lounge in the Co-op. One of the most important developments this year was the formation of the Golden Key Society. Bob Hamrdla and his committee worked hard during the fall semester to write up the rules of the Society and develop a point system. At a special meeting on December 10, your Student Council accepted the Golden Key Society and thus, the year ends with many of your Seniors receiving their Golden Keys. Your Grounds Commission did an extra fine job this year. During the fall semester they devised a parking registration system and all cars which line Delaware and Beelevue were wearing parking stickers. There was a good clean-up campaign in the Fall and in the Spring plans for a hall clean-up campaign were formulated. This was the big year for the Rally Commission also! During football season, the Rally Commission and you students went all out. The Bearcat Boosters were formed this year and came wearing white to every game. The girl Boosters wore white middies every Friday. You had class competitive rallies for the first time, Rooters' buses to every game away from home, and thus tied Menlo -Atherton for the championship. You had the best Little- Big Game Rally ever, pretty Sherry O'Neill for Football Queen, the trophy on your side, and --once again you beat your cross-town rival, Burlingame, on Turkey Day. The Rally Com- mission inished up the year with two good Basketball Rallies and a super big Spring Rally. The Recreation Commission continued on with its noon intramural sports program. They held leagues in Football, Basketball, and Soccer. In the spring you elected Pete Merle to take over for Bill Hardy and quickly more be- gan to happen around the San Mateo campus through Student Council. Yes- your Student Council did it at last! The parking lot is now paved. Through the cooperation of your Student Council, Mr. Stewart and the higher-ups, San Mateo at last boasts of an ever wanted paved student parking lot. The Big Spring Carnival was the feature project of the Spring Semester. Howard Karr and Claire Sims were appointed Carnival Chairmen and their committee did a good job. Each of the clubs and groups in school sponsored a booth and the funds helped the Student Body Treasury greatly. This was your best carnival yet! Your Student Council also worked out and accepted a plan for a student Directory. This year's Seniors were left out but this is still another step in the work of your Student Council. Starting with the spring semester, Honor Study Hall was set up for those Juniors and Seniors who were accepted. Any upper classman could apply and those students who passed a faculty student screening were allowed to study in Room 8 and use the Library freely. Room 110 became the general Study Hall. The Dance Commission helped the A. B.S, and the Junior Class adapt to the Auditor- ium Stage for their annual dances since the gym was under repairs. The Art Commission worked extra hard this year with appropriate banners for every gpme. They did especially good jobs on the banners for all skates, noon-movies and dances a so. This was quite a year for all at San Mateo High. Many new and exciting ideas were brought to life from Bearcat Boosters to the Golden Key Society and all of the annual functions were better than ever from the Little-Big Game Rally to the Carnival. Both Pete and Bill should be congratulated on the way they led you, the Student Body, through San Mateo's best year ever! 13 ' s ABS , I 3 v- .223 ., an fr 4 1 Law Mike Kenny ii Vice President X I 5.?'f:-A 'i 191 B 1 vi Ag J, ' 0 Nur! . They finished with a 7-I record. What orange -blooded Bearcat could forget San Mateo 's sensational I4-O triumph over Burlingame in the annual Turkey Day Traditional? This win enabled us to gain a tie for our second PAL championship, the first in eight long years. Larry QBuckyJ Kahler set a new league record for touchdown passes with thirteen, as well as leading the league with I7 conversions, and finishing second in the PAL scoring race, and also acting as co -captain. The other co -captain, fleet Kent Ikeda, finished third in the ground gaining department. Our defense held up equally well, shutting out our opponents in four of the last six games. We started the season rolling by coming from be - hind to defeat Palo Alto 25-13. With Kahler passing to four TD 's we downed Jefferson 38-I6 in game number two. Willow Glen gave us our third straight victory, 13-o, in San Jose's Spartan Stadium. We ran all over Carlmont in our next game, 45 -0. YAT's passing, Linck's two touchdowns, and spectacular scoring runs by Johnny Hayes and Gerry Meyer highlighted the seven touchdown affair, our highest scoring effort of the sea- son. Next, highly rated Lincoln fell before our con- quering heroes, I2-6, as Ikeda tallied two TD 's in the final period. You'll recall it was this game when you boarded one of the ten rooter busses to- journey to San Jose and cheered the boys on to victory. About this time, our student body's great spirit was commended by a local newspaper. lt looked momentarily as if we were on our way to an undefeated season. But Cap- uchino rudely shattered our hopes by handing us our only defeat of the season. A 72 yard pass play proved to be the margin of victory, 7-0. We bounced back to smash San Jose, 36-0, as Meyer got off on the longest scoring play of the year, a 54 yard jaunt. Kent Ikeda also returned a punt 70 yards to a TD. The Warriors of South San Francisco were massacred 4 I-I2 in a game that saw everyone play. Kahler hit on Il of I5 passes for four touchdowns, all ir1 the first half. Then our crowning effort, the L'il Biggiel Bucky went over for both scores and booted the conversions as SM took its second straight from the Panthers. The season was capped by the selection of Bucky Kahler, Kent Ikeda, Gino Della Libera, and Ollie Semba on the All PAL team. Semba received the dis- tinction of being chosen for the second string All North- ern California Team. But the team played as such a unit that it is im- ' possible to choose individual standouts. A combination of teamwork, excellent coaching, and the will to win made possible the outcome of this season. Credit goes to our Frosh -Soph for capturing the league to give San Mateo the schoo1's first double football championship. 'I'he only loss to mar our otherwise perfect record was an upset win by underdog Burlingame. Paced by the running of Tony Noce, Wayne Wallick, and Bill Woy, the passing of Barry McCarron, and the defensive work of Bob Plaskett, Roger Devodier, and company, the team landed on top with a 6-I -I record. We beat South San Francisco in the opener as Tony Noce tallied two TD 's. The great forward wall stopped Menlo -Atherton on our II yard line as we battled them to a 0-o deadlock, in our next game. With Noce going for two touchdowns, one an 80 yard kickoff re- turn, we downedlefferson 32 -6. The Bearkittens capitalized on fumbles, to knock Palo Alto from the unbeaten ranks 26 -o. The Sequoia Cherokees fell next on their own home grounds, by a score of I2 -0. We clinched the title by defeating Carlmont in the next to last game of the season, 20 -6. In the junior version of the Little -Big game, it looked as if it were all San Mateo when we got off to a seven point lead in the first quarter. But the Blingums came back with three TD 's of their own to upset us I8-I3. Thanks to Coaches Bob Mills and Bill Larson for a fine season. B' Graves End R. Bearcats- not only for out fine second place finish. but for the way you kept up your splrlt even when you knew we couldn't vin the championship. Ycu'll remember those tough breaks suffered at the beginning of the season: our gym was be- ing te-done: we had no place to practlceg we could play no home games. After a so-so practice season, we got off to a poor start in league play. losing the opener to Cap 60- 50, and being upset by the War- riors of South San Francisco 68- 55. But from there on in. we stayed rlght on Capuchino's tall, wlnnlng ten in a low. We had the best pair of guareh in the league ln Hap Stallman and Dave Mathis, and retutn- ing ALL PAL Star Bucky Kah- ler at the center post. With this trio running neck and neck for high scoring honors fall three finished among the top ten in scoring honorsy, we whlzzed through our last twelve games, dropping only a pal: of practice games to Fremont and Serra. Up till the time of this writing, the team had com- piled an 8-3 practice record. Returning ALL PAL star Bucky Kahler made the switch from the outfield to shortstop as the season began. The other infield berths were filled by Eddie Eskilson, Bob Freschi, and Ray Wagner. Bill Hardy, the strong-armed Bill Barraclough, and Barry McCarren, who flashed early season greatness, occupied the outfield posts. Rounding out the first eight was Buddy Hamilton at catcher. Pitchers Ed Weitzel and Reggie Christmas, up from the Frosh-Soph, were used alternately in starting roles. The boys will remember being taken home from one of the away games in a caravan of four taxis. GOLF - With Bill Cooney holding down the position of first man, followed by Bill Bochman, Gary Harmon, Russ Hagenah, Verne Goodrich, and Bob Brick, the golfers racked up a 4-1 practice season record. Bruce Bochman gave signs of moving into the first six. TENNIS - The Bearcat netmen, under the direction of Francis Robinson, ran up a 9-2 mark, the only two losses coming to junior colleges. First man was Alan Lanka. Finish- ing up the top four were George Powers, returning ALL PAL Star Bob Ja, and Milton Fung. TRACK - Paced by the work of Gino Della Libera in the weights, the running of Larry Lack in the mile, Kent Ikeda in the broad jump and hurdles, Bob Coruccini in the hurdles, and the all around efforts of Al Bergstedt, the varsity track team took all three of its first three meets. The thirties also had posted a 3-0 record at the time of this writing. Stand- outs were: Bobby Devencenzi in the sprints the tied a state mark twice in three triesj, Bob Kile in the pole bault and hurdles, and Pat Curley in the shot. The twenties sported a Z-1 record, with Terry Nakamitsu and Rich Naples supply the all around strength. Miles Taga looked good in the hurdles and sprints. SWIMMING - Senior returnees Win Downer, a consistent double winner in the 50 and 100, and Dave Creighton in the backstroke and diving were early season bright spots in the var- sity's poor 1-3 practice meet record. Byron Chan's diving and the work of Larry Behrman in the backstroke and Pete Skaife in the 50 and 100 overshadowed the 30's 0-4 showing. Led by Dick Jordan and Bill Hetherton, the C division swimmers got off to a flying start and looked forward to a fine season. GYMNASTICS - Coach Ed Kueffer's tumbling team started off a successful season by win- ning its first match with Richmond. Larry Knox, last year's PAL champion, and Terry Brandt, who placed second in the northern California meet last year, were consistent point winners. Freshmen Steve Blake and Dick Wetherall surprised everyone with their smoothness. WRESTLING - The men of Dan Du Frane had much to be proud of. Three men took places in league competition: Donn Mall went undefeated in the 145 pound class, while Terry Nak- amitsu and Wayne Fujito placed third in their respective divisions. 52. Chuck Waltz SENIOR REVIEW As we come to the end of our senior year, we seniors look back at the four eventful years of our high-school career here at SMHS, and see that the members of the class of 1955 have contributed a lot to the school. Let's see what our class has done: When we first entered as freshmen, we were the lowest of the low --but we had a good time. We elected Bill hardy our first pres- ident, and with Ginny Freeman and Bev Buckman to help him, he plan- ned our Freshman Talent Show. Senior Bow Day was another of the first semester's events. Diana Nicholson, Mary Lou Roling, and Karel Klein led us in the spring, and we had our first fun night. But before we knew it we were sophomores, and really rolling! We elected Dick Messick, Jill Shiner, and Janet Cordes as our officers and started the year off right with a fun night. Then Chuck Waltz, Ray Aliamus, and Bev Miles added something new--a Sophomore Council, which planned a carnival booth fwhere we practically gave away gold- fishlj and another fun night, complete with swimming. Finally we became juniors--upperclassmen--and elected Janet Cordes president, Allen Russell vice president, and Peggy Holman sec- retary. We started the year off with a bang by having a fun night includ ing volleyball, ping pong, and a talent show with Tom Edwards and Mr. Dunn as M. C. 'S. Folk dancing added a note of variety to the evening. Of course the greatest event of the year was the Junior Prom, Blue Mist , with beautiful decorations, and dreamy music supplied by Elmer Vincent. A second fun night was planned by our second semester of- ficers, Guy Lee, Gino Della Libera, and Diana Nicholson, who added swimming to the evening's program. We held our first skate as well, and ran the hot dog-and-coffee booth at the Carnival. Now the time came that we had been looking forward to for four years--our senior year, when we are really on top! We started the year off by electing Joe Braun, Hap Stallman, and Ellen Mitchell to lead us. We had another great skate, and lorded it over the lowly freshmen on Senior Bow Day. Our rally for the foot- ball game against Carlmont won over those of all the other classes. And before we knew it, we found that we had only one semester left be- fore we would leave San Mateo High forever. We chose Bob Foley, Dick Dunbar, and Helen True as our new officers, and elected Patti Chapin our class representative to Execu- tive Cabinetg our first activity was another skate, which was enjoyed by everyone. Then followed in quick succession our Senior Luncheon, Jinx Day, the carnival booth, and, of course, the Senior Ball, held at the California Golf and Country Club to the music of Ray Hackett's or- chestra. We had accomplished a lot as a class and had a great deal of fun doing it. The Senior Ball was not quite the end of our activities. Finally came our graduation ceremonies, and after the last strains of Pomp and Circumstance had faded away, we went to the Peninsula Golf and Country Club for our Grad Nite party, with a break- fast, a floor show, and dancing to Jack Fina's band--all give us through our parents' efforts. This was a perfect climax to our high school days and we knew that we would never forget it, along with the friendships we had made here and the knowledge we had gained, and that they would re- main treasured memories the rest of our lives. Judy Anderson and Joy Van Noorden ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The work in producing a year book requires that many people give up great amounts of time in order to make the book successful. To all the people who gave up so much time to make this book so very suc cessful, may I say thanks . First, may I thank Mr. Dalva, our advisor, for his wonderful help and advice in all the problems that came up. His great sense of humor carried many of us over the rough spots. Secondly, I Wish to thank Mr. Gabbert and Myers Pub- lishing Co. for their help and counciling. Many a time we relied on their know-how about layout and design. Thanks to everyone concerned for a splendid job. Thirdly, many thanks are due to Keith Cole Studios for their never-to-be-equaled photographic work. Spec ial thanks go to Don Collie for coming out to the school at almost a moment's notice in order to help us out of photographic jams. Last and by no means least, thanks go to my wonderful staff and especially to Judy Anderson and Joy Van Noorden, the staff secretaries, for their many hours of tedious work put in on writing and typing copy and the various correspondence that goes with any and every organization. Thank you all, for a job well done. K 110 -i X. wi I ini , , - .. - U4 ol Q Wx .N -Q, V ,lil X , ra 0 M14 -K- . A A Vi lx x ' 'Mg f ' . .
