Your annual This year is Tied TogeTher by a spoTlighT Theme and will Tocus The limelighT on each OT The several ouTsTanding TeaTures oT The year in iTs Turn. Through words and picTures iT will aTTempT To depicT The liTe, The sTudenTs, The TaculTy and adminisTraTion, The campus, and The acTiviTies aT The lair oT The BearcaT. The lighTs are dimmed, The curTain goes up, The TanTare sounds, and sTepping inTo The The spoTlighT TirsT is The adminisTraTion and TaculTy oT our school. While There is much disagreemenT beTween sTudenTs and TaculTy over various issues, a sTudenT aT San MaTeo enioys The beneTiTs oT a Tine group oT Teach- ers who really know Their sTuTT and who are really concerned wiTh his success. Special Thanks should be given To The sTaTT oT counselors and The TaculTy ad- visors oT cerTain sTudenT groups. The lighT is Tlicked oTT and Then back again-This Time Tocused on our sTudenT governmenT. Our sTu- denT leaders This year showed an unusual abiliTy and a desire To make our school a beTTer one. The A.G.S. and A.B.S. boTh enioyed successTul years, Thanks To The hard work oT boTh Tall and spring oTTicers, cab- ineT, and represenTaTives. The sTudenT body oT-Ticials, TogeTher wiTh Their commissioners, worked Tirelessly in behalT OT Their Tellow sTudenTs. Class oTTicers and Their councils also Turned in good iobs. NexT, The spoTlighT is Turned on The sTudenTs Them- selves. A secTion is devoTed To each class, in which everyone has a chance To be picTured. In This de- parTmenT, The '54 Elm scores an ouTsTanding TirsT- picTuring individually The junior class. Much crediT Tor Slv1's good year should be a+TribuTed To The aver- age sTudenT oT BearcaTville. l-le and his maTes showed a Tremendous school spiriT, one rarely maTched in high school. Now sTepping inTo The spoTlighT's beam are The aThleTes oT San MaTeo. Rarely has The campus seen such a successTul year in an all-around sense, wiTh sTrong Teams in almosT every sporT. While noT win- ning The championship, The TooTball Team broughT Themselves undying glory by beaTing haTed Burlin- game Tor The TirsT Time in nearly Ten years. The baskeTball Team was a sTrong conTender Tor The TiTle and powerhouse ouTTiTs were had in boTh baseball and Track. We had success in all our lighTweighT and Trosh-soph sporTs plus good Teams in swimming, golT, Tennis, and cross-counTry. For The TirsT Time, San MaTeo had a gymnasTics Team, which Through Their hard work broughT greaT crediT To The school and Their coach. The girls also enjoyed an ouTsTanding aThleTic program, led by Their Two Tine commission- ers. They parTicipaTed in such sporTs as hockey, swim- ming, baskeTball, and badminTon. The limelighT is nexT enioyed by The wonderTul sysTem, oT clubs aTTorded The BearcaT sTudenT. Our clubs showed greaT varieTy and range, designed To saTisTy all. Those inTeresTed in languages, drama, sporTs, phoTography, science-all Tound someThing To Their TasTe. Also deserving oT much aTTenTion are The many acTiviTies enioyed. We had many social evenTs which provided a good Time Tor all. There were such gala evenTs as The French Club annual, The Junior Prom, and The A.G.S. Tormal. Two new TeaTures were enioyed-The A.B.S. dance in The Tall and The big Grad NighT celebraTion Tor The seniors and Their guesTs on The nighT oT graduaTion. There were suc- cessTul Tun nighTs and The seniors had Two greaT skaTes. The seniors also had Their annual luncheon, Jinx Day, and Senior Ball. Many rallies were enjoyed. ATTer-game dances had unusual success during The year. LasT, buT cerTainly noT leasT, To come inTo The spoT- lighT is The senior class. To The seniors, more Than any oTher class, This book belongs as iT will live To give Them memories oT perhaps The happiesT year oT Their lives. They sTand on The verge oT Their careers and are Taced wiTh really serious problems Tor The TirsT Time. They sTand ouT as one oT The besT classes To graduaTe Trom The halls OT San MaTeo and should be given a big paT on The back Tor Their greaT con- TribuTion To The success oT I953-54. Now The spoTlighT is Turned oTT, The curTain comes down, and we are aT The end oT our book. The seniors are gone, The iuniors are abouT To enTer inTo The big year, and The sophomores wiTh Typical zeal are abouT To enTer The year which will mark The peak oT Their inTeresT, parTicipaTion, and endeavor. The Treshmen are iubilanT as They are no longer The sTrangers. lT's been a good year, one ThaT will be remembered always by Those who made iT so. virs. Signe Ahnsiedi Miss Ruih A. Alberi Mr. Ray G. STU E TCOUNCIL Now The spoTlighT Talls on your STudenT Council. This body, Tormerly known as Ex-Board, worked hard and eTTicienTly during The year. IT prompTly swung inTo moTion in The Tall under The leadership oT STudenT Body PresidenT Bill Odom. STudenT Council is a com- binaTion OT The execuTive and legislaTive parTs oT The sTudenT governmenT. The sTudenT body oTTicers com- prise The execuTive parT. Their commissioners and an elecTed represenTaTive Trom each home room con- sTiTuTe The legislaTive branch. This body meT weekly and discussed sTudenT problems and proposed acTiv- iTies ThaT concerned The sTudenT body. One oT The TirsT big iTems on The Tall agenda was The proposed sTudenT lounge. Bill Odom appoinTed Lanny Merrill as chairman oT a commiTTee To look inTo This. His commiTTee laid valuable groundwork which should prove helpTul To The goal oT geTTing The lounge compleTed nexT year. Tied in wiTh The lounge problem was The annual P.T.A. membership drive. STudenT Body AudiTor Harvey Zall and The sTudenTs working wiTh him in conjuncTion wiTh The P.T.A. made arrangemenTs wiTh The parenTs and Teachers ThaT iT, Through campaign- ing on The parT oT The sTudenTs, IOOO members could be acquired, The P.T.A. would conTribuTe 513200 To The lounge Tund. The quoTa was reached, The money was acquired, and This was anoTher big sTep Torward. Special Thanks should be given To Lanny and Harvey and all The oTher sTudenTs who devoTed so much Time To This projecT. The Rally Commission, in cooperaTion wiTh The Tine sTaTT oT cheerleaders, arranged several good rallies during The TooTball season. These were highlighTed by The one preceding The LiTTle Big Game wiTh Bur- lingame. Al Talley oT CaliTornia TooTball Tame spoke To The sTudenTs and Three greaT guys named Mc- Guire, Dunn, and SmiTh broughT down The house wiTh a hilarious skiT. jSee page 78.j Our TooTball queen, Bev James, and her princesses were crowned and The TooTball Team was honored. Also held in conjuncTion wiTh The Rally Commission was The annual Color Week in which anyone caughT wearing red had To pay The consequences. The noon inTramural program was again run oTT wiTh greaT success by The RecreaTion Commission. Leagues were Torrned in boTh TooTball and baskeTball and sTiTT compeTiTion was aTTorded boys who were noT ouT Tor school sporTs. A ping-pong TournamenT was also held. ln The spring, boTh boys and girls were able To compeTe in a very successTul mixed doubles badminTon TournamenT. ln February, Lanny Merrill was elecTed To succeed Odom as A.S.B. prexy. Lanny quickly puT his machine inTo high gear and no Time was losT because oT The TransiTion Trom one adminisTraTion To The oTher. One oT The TeaTure projecTs oT The spring semesTer was The all-school carnival. Odom had appoinTed Rosalie Hays as chairman oT The carnival commiTTee during The Tall and she and her aides sTarTed work early. This commiTTee Turned in a good job and a very successTul carnival was enjoyed by record crowds. The sTudenT body Treasury was bolsTered greaTly by The Tunds Trom This evenT. IT was TeaTured by booThs run by The various clubs and oTher organizaTions and special TeaTures included a barker, a queen, and a dance. Also making big news during This Time was The work oT The P.T.A. Toward having a celebraTion Tor seniors and Their guesTs on graduaTion nighT. This was someThing new and was meT wiTh greaT Tavor by parenTs and sTudenTs alike. N'egoTiaTions were made Tor a big-name band and The local counTry club. IT was hoped ThaT This would become a big annual evenT in The TuTure oT San MaTeo High. The ConsTiTuTion CommiTTee, under The direcTion oT Harvey Zall, did good work during The year. One imporTanT change was a new make-up oT The school Tinance commiTTee. IT called Tor The elecTion oT Two members oT each class To serve on The Tinance com- miTTee and To remain on The commiTTee unTil grad- uaTion. ln This way There would always be experienced members available To handle The imporTanT Tinancial problems oT The school. More Than likely you were mosT impressed by The TacT ThaT while each oT us worked To keep our FR AT TirsT, Trosh, because you had never had a parT in such a big producTion, you were a liTTle uncerTain and nervous, buT as The ploT became more involved, you began To live The parT and you losT ThaT uneasy Teeling. The TirsT evenT in The new play was a Tun nighT To help you geT acquainTed wiTh each oTher. Vollyball, a TalenT show and a dance were included on The program. BeTore you could plan and parTici- paTe in This specTacular evenT you had To be shown how a big producTion such as This works and iusT where you TiT inTo iT. Your very able TirsT semesTer oTTicers, John Ireland, Ann SheTTield and RuTh SuTh- erland, planned To do This by holding a Treshman assembly. The A.B.S., A.G.S. and G.A.C. presidenTs Told you abouT some oT The acTiviTies and evenTs you could parTicipaTe in. Also The school pep band and 0 SOP Sophs, you wanTed To sTarT The second acT oT our play wiTh a grand opening. For This your TirsT semesTer oTTicers, Jim Nelson, PaT Curley and Becky WhiTTle- sey, planned a soph Tun nighT wiTh all sorTs oT games and enTerTainmenT plus a dance aTTerward. WiTh The grand opening behind you, you wenT ahead To be- come one oT The mosT acTive classes in The school. The main evenT in your TirsT semesTer was a TalenT show Tor an all-school assembly! This was a Tremen- dous success and was said by some To have been beTTer Than any oTher school TalenT show This yearl Some oT The greaT acTs which earned This praise class in The spoTlighT as much as possible we all worked TogeTher because we knew ThaT in a play each parT is viTally imporTanT To The success oT The whole. l.eT's review The TirsT Three acTs oT our play and recall iusT whaT we have done in working Toward The sTardom oT our senior year. SH Trosh-soph cheerleaders led your cheers Tor The sTars oT our play. AnoTher assembly was To be held beTore The TirsT acT came To an end. The new Tumbling Team Tormed iusT This year perTormed Tor you. This year Tor The TirsT Time you elecTed a council member who aTTended The execuTive council meeTings. This made your parT in The play even more imporTanT. Your second semesTer oTTicers, Barry lv1cCarron, ScoTT Dan- ielson and Karen Greve, planned an evenTTul semes- Ter Tor you including being in charge oT The sponge Throw booTh aT The Carnival. This ended your TirsT acT and you look back wiTh a Teeling oT superioriTy as you realize ThaT you are Through wiTh being The undersTudy and can sTarT ThaT climb up The ladder inTo The spoTlighT! HS were: a Trio consisTing oT a piano, drums and an accordion: a Tew piano solos: PaT Allan on The Tiddle, and as a grand Tinale, a singing quarTeTTe. This was noT all. Your second semesTer oTTicers, Dick Dumke, Jack Finney and Ann Bercaw, planned a sophomore hop. The TirsT To be held in a long while. l.aTer on you chose The Cake Walk Tor your booTh in The Carnival. l-laving such a successTul year behind you, you look Torward wiTh conTidence To The exciTemenT and Thrills oT The nexT Two acTs oT The play when you will be-upperclassmenl JUNIORS As upperclassmen your parTs in The play became more and more imporTanT. FreguenTly you looked up and Tound ThaT The spoTlighT was on you. You are The leaders! Your TirsT presidenT, JaneT Cordes, along wiTh The oThers oTTicers, Allan Russell and Peggy l-lol- man, puT TorTh a valianT eTTorT and succeeded in geT- Ting larger parTicipaTion Than many a class preceding yours. You sTarTed oTT wiTh a bang by having a Tun nighf including volleyball, ping-pong and a TalenT show wiTh Tom Edwards and Mr. Dunn as M.C.'s. To add a liTTle varieTy you also held Tolk dancing Tor The TirsT Time. A second Tun nighT was planned by your second semesTer oTTicers, Guy Lee, Gino Della Libera and Diana Nicholson, who added swimming To The program. Also you held a junior skaTe and ran The hoTdogs-and-coTTee booTh in The Carnival. The climax To The Third acT was oT course The annual junior prom! Yes, our class is Tinally on Top. Now we are The upper-upperclassmen - The mighTy ones. BuT leT's Turn back The calendar To Those days when we were iusT beginning This new venTure called S.M. I'ligh School. Dennis Daniels, Gayle BurnsTein, and Bobbe Binsacca were The leaders we elecTed To sTarT our class acTiviTies oTT wiTh a bang. A TalenT show, The I-Iello Day lwhere many new Triendships were Tormedl, our Senior Bow Day lOh, my achin' backl, and our TirsT Tun nighT, sparked This TirsT semesTer. Some oT The braver ones even wenT To The A.G.S. dance A LiTTle BiT OT Heaven, and The A.B.S. dance, SupersTiTious STomp. Guy I'loTTman, Bill Cox, and K. Lee Manuel were The oTTicers who headed The annual Campus Day during The second semesTer. WhaT Tun iT was showing Those awe-sTricken eighTh graders around The campus as Though we knew everyThing. BuT The days zoomed by and even beTore we could Tell an Up sTrairway Trom a Down sTairway. iT seemed, we were Sophomores. This was The only Time in our class hisTory ThaT we elecTed a girl To be our presidenT. Bobbe Binsacca and her helpers Al Nichols and Marilyn Dunn spearheaded The many Tun Times This semesTer, and The all-imporTanT rally honoring our vicTorious Erosh-Soph TooTball Team. Lanny Merrill, Mickey Lax, and Carol Lusch Then Took over The class helm. Eun nighTs, assemblies and dances - all going To make This a wonderTul year. BuT The besT was yeT To come. We're now Juniors -- aT lasT, upperclassmen. WiTh Bill Odom, Dick Lyman and K. Lee Manuel as class oTTicers our Tun nighT is noThing less Than Tabulous. Our own Junior Prom, Coral Paradise, Turns ouT To be a TerriTic success, uITra-vialeT under- waTer decoraTions and all. Under The leadership OT Dennis Daniels, Kris KrisToTTerson and Carla BurmesTer, we add anoTher Tun nighT - compleTe wiTh swimming, volleyball, games, and dancing - and a Carnival booTh To -our lisT oT accomplishmenTs. The Carnival Tound us selling coTTon candy and candied apples and aside Trom The TacT ThaT we had To build our own booTh and Then only To proTiT 43 cenTs, The venTure was chalked up as anoTher wonderTul experience. Now The Time has come - The Time we've all looked Torward To wiTh eager an- TicipaTion - OUR SENIOR YEAR. Bob Schumacher, NorTon Ziegler and Carol Lusch guided us and iT was Through Their organizing ThaT we had our TirsT class skaTe. Class spiriT was aT an all-Time peak and The school spiriT was buoyed up because oT iT. TerriTic spiriT was shown aT our TooT- ball games and rallies. Our reward Tor such spiriT - Tor The TirsT Time in our Tour years oT high school, we wiTnessed a San MaTeo TooTball Team BEAT BURLINGAME. Oh, whaT a Thanksgiving Day ThaT was - one we'lI noT likely TorgeT Tor guiTe some Time. BuT The days kepT whizzing by and beTore we realized iT anoTher semesTer was over. Roy OusTaTson, Jerry Kunz and BeTsy Grinnell -The chosen ones - planned such evenTs To Top OTT our senior acTiviTies as The Jinx Day lwhaT Tunll The Senior luncheon, The skaTe, The Carnival booTh, and Ias+ buT cerTainly noT leasT, The dreamy Senior Ball held aT The CaliTornia GOIT and CounTry Club. Yes, we've accomplished a greaT deal as a class and have had a loT oT Tun doing iT, buT The sTory isn'T compleTe yeT. GraduaTion ceremonies and Then - Tor The TirsT Time in San MaTeo I-ligh School's hisTory - The Senior parenTs combined Their eTTorTs and presenTed The class wiTh The besT graduaTion presenT ever - a parTy and Senior BreakTasT aT The Peninsula GOIT and CounTry Club. Dancing, delicious Tood, and wonderTul enTerTainmenT - an eleganT aTTair and a perTecT climax To our Tour years oT high school. On June I7 The Class oT '54 bade Tarewell To San MaTeo I-Ii buT The Triendships we made here and The knowledge we gained here will be Treasured memories Through- ouT our lives.
