He likes San Mateo High School, and San Mateo High certainly likes him. We, as students especially admire his interest in our student body which he has so ably demon stratecl by his attendance at all athletic events, his jokes and cheerleading at rallies, his friendliness to the students, and his cooperation in allowing us more activities. Mr. Stewart has definitely shown that he understands and supports the students' view point. We all wish him continued success in the years to come TACULT LIST Mr. Eugene Brose T. F. REYNOLDS IAMES I. THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH Step right, up fellows and girls, see the wonders of the world-amazing sights you'll never see again! These words fell on the ears of lohnny Bearcat as he timidly approached the huge circus tent. The magnetic barker drew Iohnny irresistibly toward the entrance. Then, happily, lohnny deposited his money and bounded inside. Let's do likewise, readers of the Elm, your money has been deposited-come inside! W'ho knows what untold wonders you may see! Follow Iohnny Bearcat into the Elm, which has been likened this year to a circus. Once inside, what will be first to greet your eyes? Will it be the officers and commissioners, putting the students through their paces? Will it be the faculty, teaching the old students new tricks? To each reader the Elm will signify something different, and to every reader Chopes the Elm staffi, some- thing exciting. There goes Iohnny into a noisy row of cubicles, each proclaiming a greater wonder than the last. If you follow him closely, you will see, in one, members of the Spanish Club gyrating in the Hat Dance, in another, the Latin Clubbers racing their chariots, and in the third, the French Club singing Allouette. But these are only a few. Let the wisdom of the Scholarship Society members astound you, the skill of those in the Block SM impress you, and the efforts of the Footlighters entertain you. And after all this, many more remain. Now follow Iohnny into the huge main tent, where the Calliope is shrilling an invitation to one and all. There you will see every manner of animal Cother- wise known as students! dancing in weird and varied styles to the melodies of many orchestras. And if you look more closely still, you may recognize the gala social events of the season, Which ls Witch? , the French Clubs' Le F lacon de Neige, and other gatherings which were so much fun. But look ahead! What is this amazing exhibition of skill? The strong men are performing in the next tent-what a sight! Watch that husky fellow kick a football two miles, and that muscular swimmer flash through the water. Pay attention to the track men hurdling insurmountable obstacles and circling the track with the speed of light. It is easy to linger here for many hours, but Iohnny is continuing on his way. Last, of course, comes one of the most exciting events-the circus Bogue's Gallery, where each student can see his own face. For ahead lies the space reserved for the Classes. But Iohnny Bearcat cannot guide you all the way. He must leave you now-for you are on your own, Elm readers. May your journey through the pages of the Elm be a pleasant one! EFxg f-m-- I vweewvf .I .wtritf QPF Qfxx PRESENTING---E -BOARD The big show started last fall under the direction of Bingmaster lim Clark, President of the Associated Students. Ex-Board, the real heart of the San Mateo circus, was promptly organized with one student from each home room and all Commissioners and student body officers. A real menagerie! First social event on the program was the act presented by the Dance Com- mission, a Halloween dance called Which ls Witch? The Bally Commission kept up the lively pace by planning and executing many rallies, of which the Little Big-Game rally was an outstanding attraction, featuring football stars Harry Hugasicm and Gary Kerkorian of Stanford University. The dare-devil Freshman Commissioners succeeded in taming the Freshman, which constituted the largest class in the history of the school. The Little-Big Came rally, one of the fiercest duels on the program, was staged with some of the best spirit the school has seen. One of the most enjoyable events was the assembly at which the Cal Tjader trio entertained the school with progressive music. A welcoming com- imittee was started to show new arrivals the mysteries of the Big Top Calias San Mateo Highl. ln February Brad Stark succeeded lim Clark and led the San Mateo High students through another big show. Brad gave everyone a chance to play a part in the performance by allowing students to sign up for commissions and over two hundred students were appointed from all four classes for the commis- sions. On March 29th visitors arrived at San Mateo High, and many members of the San Mateo troupe entertained the student leaders who had come for the PAL Conference. All was not work at San Mateo this last semester though, recreation was provided in the form of a noon-time recreation program which included badminton, pingpong, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and movies. All-school fun nights added to the gaiety, and rallies added to our school spirit. The Dance Commission, with originality and daring, held informal dances in our gym for fifty cents a couple, a first in the history of San Mateo High. Early in May one of the best acts on the program was presented-an all- school carnival which meant fun and excitement for everyone. Booths were sponsored by the various clubs and organizations of the school. A dance, talent show, and athletic events held the students spellbound. During this semester many assemblies were held to educate and entertain the students, including such programs as the I. C. dance band and a presentation by the F. B. I. ln exchange for entertainment offered to them by the San Mateo performers, talent shows were scheduled from other PAL schools. But even members of the Big Top are susceptible to the weather, and several times the heat in Room 8 made it necessary for Ex-Board to meet on the front lawn of the school. Everyone can say proudly that San Mateo put on a truly fine show this past year, one which every student may well remember with nostalgia in the years to come. The Freshman, Sophomore, and lunior classes really proved to be a three-ring circus, each ring packed with exciting events and fun for each and every one of you. And the best part of the whole performance is the realization that, next year, the circus will be back again, bigger and better than ever! IUNIORS The rollicking fun night that your Iunior officers, Fred Wessa, Carol Ghiel- metti, and Betty McMann worked so hard to make a success . . . and did. Your traditional Iunior Prom . . . The unforgettable evening of dancing in a Star- dust world to the strains of Elmer Vincent's band. And then, the promises for another fun night and other activities by your newly elected spring officers, Dick Hunt, Sally Holmes, and lanet Wisnom. Yes, your Iunior year was a big top event. SOPHOMORES The Hello Day that saw the beginning of many new friendships. The fun night that was so well planned by your officers, Bobbie Binsacca, Al Nichols, and Marilyn Dunn. The times you sold refreshments at the Frosh-Soph football games and the big assembly for your victorious team. The plans that were swung into motion by Lanny Merrill, Charles Lax, and Carolyn Lusch for more assemblies and maybe another class get-together. You really made your soph- omore year a featured attraction. FRESHMEN Your first class activity-the fun night that Bill Harding, Ginny Freeman, and Bev Buckman made so successful. The football games your players helped to win. The numerous activities planned by your spring officers, Diane Nicholson, Mary Lou Boling, and Karol Klein. It was your first show, but it was a good beginning. ,, QI as f if . . 4' x,,v ,-- ,pf . 'pf- ' 'Wd JA AL.. ,av C- f f .1 'H W! . X' A . ,A I I l,,l'f I . K . JL 7,2 I Q THE CIRCUS UF LIFE Our years in high school are a part of a circus - the Circus of Life. We, the Seniors, entered as Freshmen and the magic of the big top rolled into our lives, full of wonder, anticipation, and excitement. San Mateo High looked so vast we were sure that we would never remember where all our classes were. There was a carnival given by the Senior Class. We were introduced to Senior Bow Day COh, my aching backlll and Luggage Day. The girls wore sloppy-loe sweaters with rope pearls and loafers with their socks rolled up. The fellows wore their jeans up high on their waists. Some of the bolder Frosh went to their first A.G.S. dance, Lai See Fantasy. We'd just gotten used to this new adven- ture and suddenly we were Sophomores. Newcomers to the big top were greeted - none too happily - and our second year began. A new surge of authority came over us and we tried to let the whole school know that we ran the show. During this year we gave San Mateo its first Frosh-Soph football rally. The first playday for the whole school was staged. The gals started wearing a completely new type of sweater called cash- mere and skirts were tweed and ultra-tight. The socks in our saddles and loafers were rolled down real low. The guys got daring and took the belts off their pants and let them settle down on their hips. Pendletons started appearing in every boy's wardrobe. Our circus really seemed to be at its best in our junior year. We found that we had become more and more a part of what went on. We had another Luggage Day and later in the year danced at Mardi Gras Magic, the lunior Prom. The girls wore pleated, plaid skirts, corduroy jumpers, and sleeveless blouses. Hair was cut real short or real long in a horse-tail. Suede shoes, cashmere sweaters, and denims began to be seen. Now it's our Senior year. The big top is about to roll on. There is much gaiety and excitement, but we are as the clown - with a happy' face, yet a heavy heart. As we receive our diploma, perhaps we will start to think back again P- the crazy costumes on Senior linx Day, the Senior Luncheon, the talent show, and, of course, the positively dreamy Senior Ball. During the year the gals wore lots of wool jersies, little flat shoes of all colors, large belts, casual gloves, and the Poodle cut. The fellows wore suede jackets, crepe-soled shoes and the Gaucho collar. Maybe we will think back to an assembly, too. There's a man in a gray suit addressing us. He's saying something about picking up papers on the grounds. And then perhaps, in our minds we will hear the distant rumbling of wheels as the Circus of Life moves on and another chapter of our lives has come to a close.
