It does not execute laws as the name implies but acts as a legislature. San Mateo High School's government sets forth all the principles which make up the gov- ernment ot the States and the country. Iust as the A.G.S. and the A.B.S. work separately for their individual group, the Ex-Board works tor the two as a whole. This is based on our own democratic government, as the A.G.S. and ABS. are to the state legislatures, so Ex-Board is to the Congress of the United States. San Mateo can Well be proud that it has an efficient governing loody. lt is a government ot the students, bythe students, and for the students. FAREWELL It is with deep regret that San Mateo High bids fare- well to a woman who will be remembered by all fortunate enough to know her. Mrs. Harriett Lewis has given help and understanding in the past years to various activities. Whether it was advising the German Club or developing the CARE package program, Mrs. Lewis earned the respect and admiration of all her students. Ever interested in scholarship, she inspired in us a re- spect for learning and a real appreciation for character that will live deep within our hearts. THE VARSITY Rated one step above the cellar at the begin' ning of the season, the San Mata varsity did a little better than that, ending up in a tie for sixth place. The Season started out with a long trip up north to Orland and the first loss ot the season, 3342. The second game ot the season' was the first PAL win. Willow Glen visited McCorlville Field to start ott league play with a bang. The visitors received more bangsethan the home team though, and the lvlateans came out on top, 33-6. All was not easy going, the 'Cats had a lot ot trouble suhdutrtg the South City Warriors, 25-19. This was the first night game ot the season, ln their second night game C'olltn's boys lost a close game to their traditional, or better known as crossstown rivals, Serra High. The Matearls lost hy only six points, 1843. X The tirskt league loss came a Week later, when Seauoias lndians visited San Mateo and had happy hurlting grounds in Winning, l3-7. A Week later the 'Cats pulled a sensational comeback to whip San lose, 26-20, In that game Frank Ftongey, San Mateas offensive star, scored tour touchdowns in the second halt to overcome a 20-O halt-time deficit. letterson took the measure ot the Bearcats, v 45,9 K es f s ' e , -J, 1 ,,? X W 26-l4, a Week later. ' ln the traditional with Burlingame, Bllngum got the Win and San Mateo got the paint. A fa- vored San Mateo team was humiliated, 19-l2. Lincoln Won tour days later 8-U over the locals and eight days alter the Blingum loss the top team in the conference Palo Alto won over the Mateaus 42-l2. FRGSH-SQPH FQCDTBALL The San Mateo Frosh-Soph Football team had a fairly successful season. ending with a record of six wins and two losses. The season was full of variety and surprisesg led by such stalwarts as Dick Kernick, Tom Guidry, and Woody Wilmore in the backfield and a crop of good linemen the team had its share of wins. To start the season off with a bang, the Kittens waxed Serra 20-O. Then they followed up with a 38-l2 win over the Half Moon Bay ball club. South City also bowed to the locals, who at that time were rolling onward with the league championship as their goal. The score of that one was San Mateo 27 South City l2. The first loss of the season came in the mud at Sequoia. The game was played after one of the worst rainstorms of the year. Sequoia refused to call the game, so it was played, with the result that the Cherokees won l9-U and went on to take the league championship. The San lose game was canceled, so the next contest was with Palo Alto. The Kittens again rolled, flattening Paly 33-U. A new rival faced the San Mateo team Cfreshmen onlyl in the next game, and Capuchino High went down to defeat at the hands of the Frosh, 40-13. Lincoln forfeited its game to San Mateo, and in the last game of the season the Mateans took a l4-l2 defeat at the hands of Blingum. FIRST ROW, leit to right: I. Hazel, R. Fuiito, R. Snyder, K. Tl-HBTIES BASKETBALL After playing their most inspired game of the year against a favored, taller and more experienced opponent, the 'Cat 130s finally bowed to the Burlingame Panthers, 42-4l. The Panthers forced the 'Cats to shoot from outside the key throughout the game, but for a long while it seemed even with this handicap the Mateans might win. By the end of the third quarter the 'Cats clung to a 38-35 lead, but here the Panthers began to close the gap. With a minute to play, 'Cat forward Elmer Yamada put in a lay-in, and the Bearcats led, 4l-38. However, the Panthers scored immediately to make the score 41-40, and with seconds left, Panther Bob Bighter put in the winning Panther basket. The 'Cat l3Us ended the P.A.L. season with the same record as that of the varsity. They beat Half Moon Bay, South Francisco, Iefferson, and Palo Alto, but they in turn were defeated by San lose, Sequoia, Willow Glen, Lincoln, and Burlingame. They ended in sole possession of fifth place in the PAL. Thirties stalwarts were Fritz Brousse, the tearn's leading scorer and an All- P.A.l..er, Morris Smith, Elmer Yamada, Marsh Tekawa, Al Silva, and Tom Warda. The ten's had a very good record considering that they had no returning starters, and only one starter, Roger Smith, had played more than a few minutes last season. Freshman Robert White was the team's high scorer during the season and was second only to Rodney Wong of the 20's in scoring for both teams. The Dimes lost to San lose and Burlingame for their only two P. A. L. defeats, and they also de- feated both Iefferson and Sequoia, the league's two top teams in non-league games. The first five for the Dimes at the season's end was Don lackson and Robert White at the for- wards, Ronnie Berridge, the team's most consis- tent player at center, and Eddie Ikeda and Roger Smith at the guard positions. Ty Tekawa at four feet plus played a good many minutes during the season. The Bearcat 20's enjoyed their most successful season in many years, winning five league games against a lone setback and compiling a season's record of twelve wins and only four defeats. The twenties lost only to San lose in league play, beating Half Moon Bay, South City, Ca- puchino, Lincoln, and Burlingame in league play. Outside the league the Bearcat twenties beat twice each such vaunted teams as Hayward and Fremont of Sunnyvale. The twenties were led by forward Rodney Wong, who was the high scorer for both of the San Mateo lightweight teams. However, he had many competitors for the high scoring honors. His brother Donald, Dick Hansen, Bill lacobsen, Dick Rautman, and William Kitagawa were only a few of the many outstanding players Coach Paul Armstrong had on his twenties squad this year. In Frank Lindstrom and Bob Rodriguez, Coach Donald Miller had two almost sure bets to secure points for the Orange and Black in every meet they entered. Both were equally adept at the art of diving, and it is quite possible that they might have finished the season competing against each other for lack of outside competition. Dick Nordt, the l2O's backstroker, was the only diver the Mateans could enlist for the l3O's division. Dick, a freshman, demonstrated some beautiful form in practice: he may prove to be a potent point-getter for the Walker-men in WATER POLO A group of swimmers at San Mateo featured their second season at the new sport of Water Polo during the fall months. This year's coaches were Mr. Floyd Bezowalli and Mr. William Stretch. The team won only one game, which was against their biggest rival, Bur- lingame High School. This contest was likely the most exciting, for it went into two overtimes, with the outcome of the game a win for the Bearcats. They also played Palo Alto and Sequoia twice and lost. The main strings of the team were Frank Lindstrorn, Harry Stonelake, Gordon Greves, David Searls, Bill Sunblad, Bruce Campbell, and Dave Wisnom. years to come. DIVING TEAM LEFT TO RIGHT: F. 'Sl ts fy' s v A K . . ,Q SWIMMING In pre-season practice the 'Cat swimmers looked like one of the strongest arrays of talent Coach Lloyd Walker has collected in quite a few years. The 'Cat varsity, for instance, resembled what many coaches would give a right arm or so to have. ln the sprints the Mateans were led by Harry Stonelake, who was undefeated while swim- ming with the l3Os last year. I-Ie was ably sup- ported by lettermen Frank Lindstrom, Bob Bod- riguez, Bruce Campbell, Keith Iohnson, Wayne Iohnson, and Len Scannell. The backstrokers were featured by Gordon Greve, who last year won all his P.A.I.. dual meets and copped the N.C.S. as Well. Understudyillq G-reve was David Searls, another letterman. The breaststroke Was capably handled by lack Ellingson and Bill Sundblad. Sundblad, incidentally, was also the 'Cats top man in the individual medley. In the l3Os classification lim Clark and lim Byrd were the top competitors for the 'Cats, While Mike Dewees, Dick Nordt, and Ty Tekawa stood out for the l2Os. A lack of performers dulled the 'Cat lightweights' chances. ln their first meet of the season the 'Cat Varsity demonstrated its power and versatility, as it took every place against Burlingame in soundly whipping the Panther Varsity, 51-I3. The 'Cat l3Us paddled their way to a 36-20 Win, but the Panther l2Us squeezed by the 'Cats lightest of the light, 27-21. 4 Z Z f I v K X5 X f N 'K-+5 N XM ,wx mf f X I f If X X Q grfgiik . f , K. .- 1, W M . 2 ,vu :L , 9?-V'-' , 7ii1w:Q'..,. Coach Frank Collin had a number of returning veterans, including his top twosome of last year, Ralf Wrenn and Ned English. Duke Leffler, a promising junior, made his initial bid tor the squad. San Mateo's tennis team promised to make or Very good showing at the P.A.L. Roger Smith, the number one man, took his first two matches against Lincoln and Palo Alto, and the Cats lost only one match as compared with nine wins in the two meetings. Smith is backed by Dave Wisnom and Marty Lee in the singles, and the doubles combos of Don Iackson and Pete Minor, and Brad Stark and Henry Lackner. The Cats' only serious threats to a P.A.L. champion- ship seemed to come from Burlingame and Sequoia. 20's FIRST ROW, lei! to right: L. Schumacher, D. Lee. R. Ranch, I. Sutherlin, P. Sheffield, P. SEC- OND ROW: T. Guidry, B. Garner, D. Wolisen, B. Taylor, R. Hiqbee, C. H d 1' n W en e so , . Tanner, W. Daniel- SOH- Q I LIGI-ITWEIGHT TRACK The Bearcat lightweight tracksters were not quite as deep in strength as the varsity, but they, too, had a considerable amount of individual strength. The thirties, in Bill Garner and Elmer Yamada, had two boys who could decide any meet almost by themselves. Garner was always a winner in the hurdles, usually could be counted on for five points in the pole vault, and won the 330 with regularity. Yamada, or sophomore, was the 'Cat thirties' top broad- jumper, and he usually was right up with Garner in the pole vault and hurdles. In the middle distances Bod McDonald, Dick Wolfson and Gordon Boloff were San Mateo's top performers, while in the sprints the 'Cats were paced by Lepoleon Mcliemore and Lee Ridgeway. The twenties improved a great deal after a bad start. The 'Cat twenties lost their first two meets, but, led by their One-man team, lohn Sutherlin, the twen- ties looked like championship material by mid-season. Sutherlin was the most consistent point getter on the whole track team. At different times during the season he entered the 75, l50, 330, broadiump, and highjump, in the El Cerrito Relays he ran a 440. Sutherlin averaged three wins per meet. The 'Cat twenties had good strength in the sprints, where Paul Sheffield and Henry Quock did yeoman work. ln the hurdles Dick Lee and Gordon Tinker were the best, while in the 330 Alan l-linman and Fred Biork topped all com- petitors. Quock was the best shotputter, while Sheffield did some fair broad- jumping. I The 'Cat lightweights were to be reckoned with in the P.A.L. finals. VARSITY TRACK Coach Ray Allee collected his most formidable aggregation in a good many years this annum, and many thought the San Mateo varsity tracksters might take the N.C.S., as they did a few years back. The lvfatean varsity had its greatest single event strength in regard to depth in its hurdlers. ln Lou Bortolin, Harold Pemberton, and lim Simmons the Allee- cats could lay claim to a trio as good as any to be found in local high school circles. Bortolin was also a top-notch broadiumper, and he was expected to be one of the quartet on Allee's quarter and half mile relay squads, while Pem- berton was quite a good pole vaulter. The 'Cats abounded in sprinters. Al Tinker, Tom Guidry, and Charles Mickey Lax gave the Mateans as fast a trio as could be located anywhere in the league. The quarter mile was the personal property of Russ Durham: he was unbeaten in this event at this writing. Durham also was a good broad- jumper and ran on the 'Cat half mile relay squad. The shotput featured Andy Andersson, a sophomore. Andy took the El Cerrito Relays shotput champion- ship in mid-season and appeared headed for even greater glories. Dan Westi- gard was usually a consistent point maker in the shot. Bill Wells in the pole vault and Walt DeLear in the discus were winners in early season, but by mid-year they began to lose rather consistently. Overall, however, the 'Cat varsity looked to have depth in almost every event. VABSITY BASEBALL Coach Dan Lacy's baseballers, with a practice record of two wins and ten losses, plus one tie, were looking forward to better things in the P.A.L. when this story was written. Four of the Matean losses were by one run, and with a few breaks, the 'Cats might easily have won them. ln the pre-season consensus conducted among the sportswriters in the P.A.L., the Bearcats were chosen to come in sixth or possibly fifth in the ten-team league. Three pitchers - Marv Lamson, Dick Matlock, and f-larry Messick-have pitched well on most occasions, but bad support has cost them more than one game. The leading hitter in these practice games has been Dick Sanders, right fielder with a .421 average. Don Gile, long ball-hitting catcher, had a seasonal average of 306. Gile had pounded out four triples and seven doubles. Mario Devincenzi, a freshman who occupies the hot corner for the Lacymen, was second to Sanders, hitting a healthy .352 clip. Also playing good ball in the 'Cat infield were Bill Cox, another freshman, at shortstopg Bod Loud, minute second sacker, Guido Croaro, who has ably relieved Gile of the catching chores 5 and Bon Ven- turelli, first-baseman. Lacy had shifted the outfield a great deal, but his last com- bination of Dick Marble, left field, Dick Kernick, center field, and Dick Sanders, right field, seemed certain to stick. Others certain of seeing a good deal of action were LeRoy Ottley, Fritz Brousse, Tom Barrie, Don Fenili, and Stan Reekes in the infield, and Bon Miller and Bill Bohn in the outfield. As the season progressed, the Bearcats improved by ironing out their defen- sive play, infield, baserunning, and hitting. The return of regular second base- man, Bill Staley, out with a broken wrist later in the season, will certainly strengthen the team and provide a better double-play combination with Bill Cox. The team batting average of .2l5 is also likely to improve when veterans Dick Marble, Dick Kernick, and Guido Croaro begin to duplicate the hitting prowess displayed by them in the l95O P.A.L. campaign. ln San Mateo's :first thirteen games, their averages combined were .l4l. ln contrast, their combined averages were .302 in P.A.L. play last year. lf they pick up to last year's aver- ages, the 'Cats' chances of finishing high up in P.A.L. are good. .-... Certainly the outstanding event in girls' sports this year was the opening oi the new locker room, equipped with showers, fluorescent lights, a locker for each girl, and a public address system. A little music during dressing goes tar to raise the spirits! Recognizing the news value of the dressing room, Block SM. invited all Block S.M. alumnae to a party to inspect the new facilities, with badminton, volleyball, and swimming on the program. As usual, Block S.M. girls organized stairway duty and guides tor Open House night. Fall officers were Mary Ellen Yee and 'Barbara Lund. Marcia Andrew and Mickey Miner took their positions in spring. C, A. C. The Girls' Athletic Council organized tive after-school sports. ln the tall semes- ter, when Carol Hotchkiss was G.A.C. president, hockey and volleyball were offered, with Frances lackson and Mickey Miner the managers, respectively. During Gloria Chew's presidency, girls could participate in basketball, softball and badminton. Managers for these sports were Marcia Andrew and lane Mills, Carolyn Eastman and Frances Nolan. The G.A.C. sponsored a play day to which they invited girls from letierson, South San Francisco, l-lalt Moon Bay, Capuchino, Burlingame, Sequoia, and Palo Alto high schools. Do you remember, Freshmen- The Senior Bow Day and your first Fun Nite. Weren't they fun! Your fall President, Dennis Daniels, and his Veep, Gail Bernstine, and Secretary, Bobby Binsacca, were right on the ball with a talent assembly soon after their installa- tion. An officers' assembly presented the spring officers, David Hoffman, Billy Cox, and K. Lee Manuel, who planned one more assembly to choose the future Frosh-Soph cheerleaders. And, last but not least, Campus Day, when you escorted through the campus the eighth-graders who watched you lower class- men with wide-eyed awe. X Do you remember, Sophs- That really successful Fun Nite put on by President Dick Hunt, Veep lulia Remmel and Secretary Peg Manuel, that everyone raved about so. Next thing you knew the president had an assembly introducing the new officers: lim lones, Willard Turner, and ludy Grant. Then came a talent show, tag day, and a fun nite. What a busy year! Do you remember, luniors- The killing l93O movies at the Fun Nite. Then lim Clark, Fritz Brouse, and Bobbie Feldman, with their active Iunior Council, planned the traditional lunior Prom and named it Mardi Gras Magic. lt was called the dance of the year. Remember the proud realization you felt of the close-coming senior year when you put on your Senior rings. Bill Gregory, Art Bemmel, and Sally Dollrnan, the spring officers, ended the year with a fun nite. Do you remember, Seniors- The Fourth Year Frolic, title of your night of fun. And your fall officers: Ned English, lack Chalmers, and Shanda Scott, also scheduled a Senior Skate that was a roaring success. Spring officers: Al Tinker, Walt Stelling, and Nancy Mausser, of course, planned the Senior Luncheon at Villa Chartier, Cut Day, and the dreamy Senior Ball. And now you must say so long to proms and senior balls, finals and flunk lists, the Co-op and the cafeteria, donkey basketball and disaster drills, Big Little Games and Orange and Black. So long, Seniors. But never so long memories. You saw the rainbow as freshmen. You worked four years to find the prom- ised treasure, and now you realize that it was a pot of golden recollections, filled every year with faces and activities in a never-to-be-forgotten high school.
