Env The Associated Student Government of San Mateo High School is composed of five officers, the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and auditor. These students are elected by the student body at the end of each semester and assume their respective offices at the beginning of each new semester. lt is the job of the president to preside over all A. S. assemblies and business and Ex-board meetings. The viceepresident arranges all assemblies and presides over all business meetings when the president is absent. The secretary records the minutes of all A.S., Ex-board, and business meetings. The secretary also takes care of all A. S. correspondence. lt is the job of the treasurer to keep track of all A. S. funds, and to help promote money making activities. The auditor Works with the financial faculty advisor to see that the financial books are kept in order. One of the many duties of the president is to appoint, with the approval of Ex-board, a group of commissioners. These students work along with the officers to promote school activities. The Associated Student Body commissioners, appointed by the president and approved by Ex-board, are the cabinet of the high school's government. They hold office for one semester, and work side by side with the elected officers and representatives in carrying out their duties. They co-ordinate the activities of the various groups and classes and execute any responsibilities given to them by the president. Following the revision of the A. S. Constitution last spring, the sixteen coni- missioners now listed are the Dance, Rally, Girls' Athletics, Boys' Athletics, Grounds, Traffic, Yearbook, Publicity, Drama, Music, Freshmen Boys', Fresh- men Girlsf Radio, Co-op, and Cafeteria. EX-Board is composed of representatives who are elected at the beginning of each new semester from the home rooms. It is the job of the representatives to either pass or reject motion and laws concerning the welfare of the student body. lt is also the job of the representative to report to his home room the busi- ness carried on in Ex-Board and to carry back to Ex-Board any suggestions that the home room students may make. Ex-Board is called to order every Tuesday after school by the president of the student body. The salute to the flag is given and the secretary reads the minutes of the previous meeting. After the commissioners have given their re- ports, the meeting is open to any business that may come before it. With Ex-Board as our House of Representatives, our school government is truly a government of the students, by the students, and for the students. SPRING FIRST ROW, left to right: M. Heinecke, B. ABOUT BOY SHINANIGAN S To Whom it may concern, six purple flashes and a small burst of thunder! This is the way Bob Murphy started his semester as A. B. S. president, assisted by Chuck Fitch and Duane Eckert somewhat in this manner. Since the A, B. S. treasury was flatter than a praying Mohammadenp B b decided on having the A. B. S. dance right away. The Single Wing Swing s the name and success was the outcome. Bob also held a couple of assemblies much to the pleasure of the boys. Then without the use of safety pins came the change of the semester. A mere infant in the way of politics, also one of the few juniors who enjoys the privilege of being A. B. S. president, was Bob Doe, who got the nod and job. lim Reilly and Bill McMichael were his officers, and he started off on his career by having Ky Ebright, the head crew coach of the U. C., to tell the boys about his experiences at the l948 Olympic Games in London, England. Mr. Charles Mar- shall is the worthy advisor for our oirganization and is doing a Wonderful job. Selling refreshments at the football games was a major project. The girls also put on a noon dance for the football squad to send them off in style to their first game. A Date With Dad presented a wonderful evening for all those who went. Good food and laughter, school songs and cheers, led by the dads, could be heard resounding through the halls of the school. Patty Elsener was the guest speaker at the sports assembly and gave the girls a first hand view of the Olympic swimming team. The girls of Miss Maloney's sewing class presented a fashion show, Winter Fantasy, to the AGS at Christmas time. The spring AGS, under the direction of loyce Foster, Gloria Dillon, and Diane Mitvalsky, was equally as active. With spring came the Easter Egg Hunt. The AGS had fun hunting several members of the ABS, who played the parts of the eggs. The scene was a Chinese Tea Garden, and the essence of incense floated in the air. The doors of the gym were flung open to admit the dancers to the traditional AGS formal, Lai See Fantasy, Cgood luck in Chinesel, for this was the time of year when the girls asked the boys for a date. Behind the scene of the AGS is a very active and able advisor, Miss Mildred Hays. Truly without her help, the AGS would never be able to present such full and active semesters. 4145534 . Mr. George Wihr C Ja, ' During this past year, the members ot Hi-Staff, under the supervision of Miss Ieanette Weber, continued to publish the bi-monthly newspaper ot the Asso- ciated Students of San Mateo High School. The is organized on the same basis as a professional newspaper with regular beats assigned to the reporters and deadlines established prior to each publication. The page editors make-up the page dummies, write the heads, and then submit the copy to Mr. George Wihr, print shop instructor. He and his shop classes handle the technical side of publishing the four-page paper. Many students of journalism also work with the publicity commission by writing columns of school news and special articles for the city papers. Seven members oi the staff became members of Quill and Scroll, the lnter- national Honorary Society of High School Iournalists, last semester. jim frm. A yearbook is, in all reality, a memory book. Sometime in the future as you take your '49 Elm from the shelf, blow the dust from its cover, and turn the pages, your thoughts will return to the time when you were a student at San Mateo High School. As you open the book, you will see pictures of the school building, so strange to a freshman and so familiar to the upperclassman. The pictures of the faculty will remind you of the many times those same teachers gave you extra advice and guidance. The familiar faces of the student body officers will call to mind election campaigns, assem- blies, and meetings of Ex-board, A.G.S. and A.B.S. representatives. The sports section will bring back the many times you either participated in a sport on a Bearcat team, or cheered for that team from the stands. lt will also recall rallies, the cheer- leaders, and the school song, Orange and Black. The social candids will bring nostalgic mem-- ories of the many times you planned, decorated, and then attended school dances and other events with your best date, The pictures of the oranizationse.-Band, Glee. C.S.F., lunior Statesmen, Footlighters, Hi-Staffe will remind you of the fun you had planning activities with these various groups. Then . . . the senior section. As you look at the faces of your friends, you remember them, their mannerisms, their nicknames, and most of all, the good times you had with them, both in and out of school. All this and much more is brought to you by your yearbook, the Elm. lt is a key to your memories and is a treasured possession of all alumni. ,.--.:':-,.......- BETTY HOWAT Editor ,,.-vr '- MM STAFF FIRST right: Wallace. ' 0 lf anyone were to ask, What school is famous state-wide for its bands, or- chestra and chorus? Naturally, San Mateo would be the answer! Mr. Brose CProfJ and Mr. Campagna CDukeD have done marvelous jobs with the Senior and Iunior bands. The bands participated in two Portola Festival Paradesy gave superior performances in the annual contest held at San Iosey marched at all school football games: did a wonderful job of representing the Montana band at the Stanford-Montana football game, and gave their annual concerts. Mr. Dunn also has had a big job directing a 29 piece orchestra, a lOO voice choir, plus an A Cappella. An operetta is one of the annual events of the chorus. At Christmas time, the chorus caroled at the different hospitals, and during the Portola Festival Week, they gave a top-notch performance before a capacity audience. One of the frightenest San Mateo varsity foot- ball squads in this school's 25 year history, the 1948 Bearcats, under Head Coach Wag Iorgen- sen, and his assistants, Bay Allee, Walt Selover, and Frank McGraw, finished the season in a third place tie with Lincoln, each club register- ing four wins, two defeats, and one tie. The 'Cats had a most eventful practice season as the varsity whipped Fremont, 12-O, and Oak- land Tech, 21-6, while the junior varsity slashed Oakland Tech, 13-7, Serra, l3-7, and Commerce, 24-13. Fullback Bill Botieff crashed over with San Mateo's first P.A.L. touchdown in the opening game with Sequoia, and Sal Campagna, all- P.A.L. back, plunged over with the winning TD as the Cherokees fell 13-7. The Mateans made it two in a row as they trounced San lose 20-6 the following week. Bob Cummings tossed to Bill McMichael, Campagna passed to Cameron Van Wye, and Botieff plowed from the one-foot line for the three Mateo touchdowns. After two weeks of disaster, which found Palo Alto and Lincoln handing San Mateo its only two setbacks of the year, by respective scores of 27-l2 and 26-7, our boys hit the comeback Jn Mad trail as they bopped lefferson lO-9, as Campagna passed to Dick Bailey for one TD and ran over another, while Duane Eckert's aerial to all-P.A.L. End Bill Kahler was good for the third. An underdog 'Cat eleven upset mighty South City l8-6, with Campagna scoring twice and flipping to Kahler for point eighteen. The stage was set for the Little-Big Game. Needing a win to tie for the championship, San Mateo battled heavily-favored Burlingame to a 6-6 tie. Behind 6-O, San Mateo produced a 70-yard drive which was climaxed when Botieff smacked over from the one. The unsung heroes of the gridiron, the seven men in the Bearcat line, developed into one of the best forward walls in the league. Standouts in the line were Kahler, Bill McMichael, Dick Bailey, Don Sicard, Bay Christenson, Dick Mc- Clure, and Iohn Bland, who was picked as cen- ter on the second all-P.A.L. eleven. Bob Alcala, lim Geiger, Bon Olson, Bill Mills, and Phil Iaeger all saw a great deal of line action, also. Other backfield stalwarts, other than those who figured in the season's scoring, were Bill Haugeer, Pat DeSibio, Art Boling, and Wes Siegfried. Collin's crew finished in second place with five wins, one tie and one loss. With Bing Crosby cheering for the opposition, San Mateo dropped its first and last practice game as Bellermine chalked up a 20-6 win. In the opening league game, the Bearkittens fought Sequoia to a 6-6 tie with Fullback Willie Grimes racing 80 yards for the lone Matean touchdown. The 'Kittens went on to bop San lose, 21-6, and then toppled Palo Alto from the unbeaten ranks with a 14-0 dumping on the local gridiron. Lincoln's Frosh registered San Mateo's first league defeat as the Lincs blanked the Mateans, 14-0. On the next Thursday, Iefferson met San Mateo in what eventually seemed like a track meet, with San Mateo coming out on top, 40-20. Forty and 60-yard runs were numerous through- out the day. San Mateo tacked on its fourth league victory when the 'Kittens traveled to South City to smack the northerners, 32-12, in a contest highlighted by a pass from Dick Marble to Willie Wright, which, coupled with Wright's run, was good for 70 yards and a TD. ln a hard fought prelude to the Litttle Big game, San Mateo overcame stubborn Burlingame for a l3-l2 final score and the Mateans' fifth con- quest. Grimes scored all l3 San Mateo points. Grimes was by far the standout for the Mateo Frosh. Marble, Frank Rongey and Dan Aguilar were others who sparked the backfield attack. End Willie Wright turned in the most consistent line play for Coach Collins and his assistant, George Kristovich. Standouts in the middle of the line were Walt Anderson, Ed Baldini, Clark Rogelsted, Tom Tognoli, and Bob Whitmer. Ray Zieroff turned in good efforts at the other end post. Dick Alcala, Tom Warda, Dick Hansen, Phil lshimaru, Bill Nelson, and Bob Laud spear- headed their squad to conquests over Half Moon Bay, Palo Alto, Iefferson, and South City. San Mateo's lO's best game, like the 'Cat 20's, was a non-league contest. The Mateans stood out when they outfought Bellermine High in an ll-10 final score. TWENTIES Plugged throughout the year by lrv Bios, Len Chiu, Walt lverson, Bob Cunningham, and Wal- ter Chinn, San Mateo High's 20's basketball squad had one of San Mate-o's best seasons in recent years. Coach Ben McGuire, in his inaugural San Mateo coaching role, steered his boys to a three- way tie for second place, finishing with a six- win, two-loss count, along with Palo Alto and Sequoia. The Bearcat 20's smashed South City, Palo Alto, Iefferson, Lincoln, Half Moon Bay, and trounced Burlingame 20-8. Outstanding game of the 20's was when the Mateans came from behind in the last thirty seconds to tie Serra, and then went on to beat the Padres in overtime 33-32. TH1!l2TIES Al Bertagna, Guido Pellegrini, Don Peterson, Chuck Fitch, and Marv Huss sparked San Mateo f-ligh's 30's basketball team in a tough l949 league race. Tae Mateans finished with a three- win, five loss record. Victims of the Bearcats were lefferson, Half Moon Bay, and South San Francisco. Many of our setbacks cculd have gone either way. For instance, after leading Burlingame at halftime, San Mateo bowed by one point, 31-30. Bertagna was chosen team captain of the year. Bertagna and Huss were high point men of the season, with Pellegrini, Fitch, and Peterson holding down the defense. VARSITY After a mediocre seasonal start, Ben Mc- Guire's varsity basketball squad climaxed the l948-lQ49 hoop season in a blaze of victory, as the quintet of Lou Boris, all-P.A.L., Bill Kahler, Duane Eckert, Sal Campagna, and Bob Cum- mings, wcn its last four games from stiff op- position. With a two and three record, San Mateo ex- ploded against previously-undefeated Lincoln, and then proceeded to knock San lose from the leaders' ranks. The Bearcats topped highly- rated Serra in a return match, and completed the season by massacring Burlingame, 35-29. San Mateo finished with a five-three league record, and thus tied for third place. Rounding out the golf club were: Ralph Wrenn, Ron Olson, Ned English, and Gus Zon- gus. English, a sophomore, and Wrenn, a fresh- man, were the only lowerclassmen on the squad. Keller, McMichael, Olson, and Zongus all grad- uate this Iune. J ' The San Mateo High tennis team finished a successful 1949 season by placing high in the P.A.l... finals. Walt Chinn and Tom Fike were the standouts for the Mateans in the singles events, while the combinations of Dave Wisnom and Gregory Davis, and William Gee and Lenord Chiu brought home many league Wins in doubles competition. This group opened the season in good style but was considerably weakened when several outstand- ing squadmen were forced to compete in the twenties division. Of the few men left by the time the P.A.L. sea- son rolled around, Bill Nelson, Iohn Mock, and Henry Quock were outstanding. Nelson per- formed creditably in the shot and broad jump, Mock held down the sprints, and Quock partici- pated in the shot. TWENTIES The Bearcat twenties proved to be the most potent of all San Mateo track squads this sea- son as they Won a great majority of their meets by large margins. Led by Ioe Lacsamana, Melvin Kani, Len Chiu, Vince Ormando and Lee Ridgeway in the sprints, and lrv Rios and Alie Straub in the hurdles and jumps, the team started with Lowell and swept through the P.A.L. season with a great degree of success. One of the highlights of the twenties season was in the P.A.L. relays where their two relay teams posted the only San Mateo wins of the meet. l u xr Ti 38 . THIRTIES The Bearcat Thirties, although they did not vvin every meet, proved to be one of the out- standing divisions in this season's track picture. Some of the most outstanding San Mateo in- dividual performers raced to victories in this division. Two of the fastest sprinters of all P.A.L. 30's were Ted Sevilla and Al Tinker. Sevilla in the 330 yard dash, and Al Tinker in the 75 and 150 yard sprints both ran to unofficial P.A.L. records in duel meets during the season. Early in the fall the class had an assembly at which Mr. Acheson and the Freshman Commissioners spoke, and the sophomore cheer leaders led the class in school yells. The freshmen elected their officers and they were presented to the class. The annual Frosh Fun Night was in October, which was a huge success due to the help of Mrs. Dolores Meyers and Miss Martha Mullowney. As the lowly low Freshmen became the mighty high, they started their spring semester with new commissioners and class officers. Having won the punctuality contest, they had a special talent assembly. In May the class played host to the prospective incoming freshmen on Campus Day. From this class will come future leaders of San Mateo High School. Our president, Bill Matson, vice-president, Ted Bouret, and secretary, Carolyn McClure, with the help of the Sophomore Council, planned the activities of the fall semester. Among these activities was the Iungle lump, the first dance to be given by the sophomores. Our fun night was a big success with all partici- pating in the games and stunts. Sports have always been a thrill to sophs and We Were no exception. The frosh-soph football game against Burlingame will always be remembered: we Won by one point! Jfftflf- Take your pick and shovel and let's go diggin' back through some golden merriories. ln our Treasure Chest we find many haDDY hours almost forgotten by now. lt's kinda fun to diQ back over our high school years, recalling places we've been and good times we've had. Remember our first school dance, Bearcat's Ball? We danced to the dreamy music of Mat Mateo. Leading our Hit Parade then were songs like To Each l-lis Own and Chickery Chick. That was the year San Mateo won the Big Little Game with heroes like Bob Ratcliffe, Eddie Mack, and Kenny Rose carrying the ball. We stepped into our sophomore year filled with pride. Pot Erickson's band became the rage. We danced many hours away at the Continen- tal, Cow Cow Pow Wow, and the Shipwreck. The Big Little Rally was the first time the gym had been restricted. We became familiar with Searsville, Carmel, and starlight dancing at Adobe Creek. San Bruno decided to build a high school, and we received the promise of grad- uating in an auditorium, although graduation in l949 looked so far away. When we got to be juniors, we put away the worries of books and tests. We were upperclass- men! Senior Rings and the lunior Prom drew our attention. The Carosel turned out to be the dance of the year. Other highlights: Clare de Lune, Witch's Whirle, and the Four lacks and a lill FALL COUNCIL FIRST ROW, lelt to right: C. Rctlill, G. Brown, C. We did- -but! We passed, none the worse for wear, and suddenly found ourselves seniors. From our senior year we have a big, gold chunk of mem- ories to add to our Treasure Chest. All the tra- ditionsfSenior Cut Day, the last senior assem- bly and the Senior Ball. Remember what a top- notch prexy Al Bertagna was? Remember how we broke all traditions and elected Ingrid spring prexy, first time in twenty years that a girl had held that office? Remember the fight to win our last Big Little Game? ln our minds we can and are ready to accept our diplomas. ln our hearts we are not quite willing, for the diplomas mean goodbye. Good- bye to proms, senior balls, hallways lined with lockers, the co-op, the gym, the skeleton in the biology room, the mad scrambles between classes, flunk lists, Big Little Games, and Orange and Black. We give a little prayer of relief now that finals are over. English 8, Trig, and Chem are a thinq of the past, thanks to the teachers who pulled and pushed us through. But, we really do have a golden treasure of memories, and whether we admit it or not, we are going to miss San Mateo High School. lohnny Bearcat SPRING COUNCIL FIRST ROW, left to right: W. Greer, I.
