Miss Jane Comings, 1944 Since the real memorial to Miss Jane Comings vvill alvvays be in the beautiful English buildings of our San Mateo l-ligh School 'fcampus,H and in the hundreds of students vvith vvhom she vvorl4ed in the social service of the fAx.G.S. vvhile she vvas Dean of Girls and Vice- Principal, the Elm l-listorian has turned bacl4 the pages of Elms of the past to marlq the grovvth of this school, vvhich has become identified in so many vvays vvith Miss Jane Comings. ln 1909, vvhen Miss Comings joined the faculty, San Mateo l-ligh vvas on the old St. Margaretfs School prop- erty. The lflmmpublished annually since 1906wvvas named for a big ivy-covered tree standing before the school an old elm much lil4e that vvhich has shaded Miss Comings' Elm St, home. ln 1911, the Elm published the faculty picture reproduced above and paid tribute to 'fMiss Jennie Comingsf' for her aid to the student body as vvell as to her classes in chemistry. ln 1915 the 15.65. vvas organized, and for thirty years it vvas to be one of the most active and useful or- For Miss Jane Coming . Miss Jennie Comings, from 1911 ELM ganizations of our school. During thevfirst World War, the Px.G.S. aided the Red Cross, in one drive, the boys gave their cherished pocket knives, the Elm records. So the spirit of San Mateo l-ligh foreshadovved the generosity shown in all drives during these present World War years. ln 1917eethe year vvhen Coach George Wihr, author of our school song, Orange and Black, tool4 a Rugby team to the state championshipethe l-lonor Society was organized, and bonds for a high school at Burlingame were voted. ln September, 19Q7, San Mateo l-ligh moved to its present location, and vvhile Miss Jane Comings vvas Dean of Girls, the xAx.G.S. enlarged all of its activities. Novv, on its thirtieth anniversary, the fAx.G.S. leads the San Mateo l-ligh School in tribute to one remembered by so many hundreds of our students vvho have seen this school grovv in spirit and in scope through those thirty- five years.

Une of the many benefits is the beautiful trophy vvhich he gave the tvvo schoolsea trophy to be presented each year to the vvinning team of the 'Big-l.ittle'y gameffvvon this year by San Mateo. Qur lovely nevv Student Body Room in the Art Building is one of the numerous additions to the school made possible by our principal, Mr, Joseph Acheson, formerly Vice Principal, Dean of Boys, and coach. Mr. Acheson has been helpful in promoting good feelings between the tvvo schools.
