Horo' your Elm Connie Richardson Qhhhhs and ahhhh's are the usual exclamations that greet the memories of the past year-namely the yearbook. There are the comparison of photos, getting the book signed by one and all, the expected criticisms, and students leafing through the pages during lax moments in boring periods. l doubt very much if these same students realize the work, and much more important-the effort, put into their Elm during the past year, while they are busy making memories. Let me tell you briefly how the '45 Elm came into being. First of all the staff originated in a new English class-Creative Writing, to be exact. The natural thing to do first was to obtain officers, that is get the staff organized with a special job for each member. The editors were chosen, as were the rest-Business Manager and staff members --for their ability and capability for this type of work, and these- same people were approved by the administration. The first iob for the staff as a whole was to decide on a good basic theme to tie our book together. Everything was submitted, from Dont fence Me ln to l-lorizons of the futureff Finally we decided on a co-theme, the main part being Youth of Today- Leaders of Tomorrow , and to give the book more continuity, we chose the school song, ORANGE and BLACK. The Elm is for the students, by the students, and the staff kept that thought behind all projects. It wasn't as easy as itsounds. We all had to learn how to produce, manage, and complete a book. We learned about layouts, cuts, proofs, balance-learned about design -and all the thousand things that go to make up a year-book. lt's all very excitingemeeting deadlines, talking newspaper language, urging the speed of completion. There are also a few worries along that same line-promoting sales, hoping that the money goes as far as the staff does, hoping the pictures fit the layout, praying the final measurements are correct, trying to keep the staff generally sane, and continuing with a normal life. lo show for our now-trivial struggles, we have our Elm. lt's for you to enjoy, and remember, as you turn these pages, our idea is the same as yours: MEMORIES The band drilling discordantly under the hot September sun, Clocks that are never quite sure what time it is, The roar of an Army plane swooping low over the building, Girls with pigtails in crazy jalopies, The building being repaired and the smell of Chem lab, Pep assemblies and low senior yells, The Big-Little game and graduation night, The bewildered frosh and the mighty seniors, Sweaters, blue jeans, and soft billowy formals, Settling the world's problems in history class, January and the drizzling rain, l-lisn block on a delicate gold chain, The Blue Boar after school, Spring again, dreams and spring fever, Summer vacations at long last at Searsville, The boys in the service who keep coming back- SAN MATEO l-llGl-ll The Leader ef Temerrew illlertiiuri ie i'aIuiamul , K If Skip Forden , fV6 ' l'l,, 'ff ft 'U' J -llbufl-' 7 1945-This is a year of war, this is a war generation. Boys are filling up the ranks, every day one more says Hgoodbyen and goes. We all chip in and give him a present. So long, fellow-H An old grad of three years ago comes back with service ribbons and tells us at assembly how it feels to face the enemy and kill hime- So long, fellowvu The rest of us are waiting for our eighteenth birthdays. Maybe we'll graduate first, or maybe they'll take us immediately. But a fellow waiting for that birthday does a lot of thinking about how the world got this wayfand what he can do to help. As a youth, Abraham Lincoln pointed the way to future generations when he said, l shall study now, and get ready, and some day my chance may comef' l-le studied, got ready, and his chance came. When his country was torn by civil war and on the verge of destruction, he was ready. l-le stepped forward with knowledge and experience gained by study and preparation. l-le was ready to serve when his country called. The future of his country for the next thousand years was in his hands, and one false move might have destroyed her. But because he had studied, because he was prepared, a nation was saved. We, too, must be prepared, for we too shall have our chance. We can not all be Abraham Lincolns, we can not all stand at the helm of the ship of state, in the spotlight, and direct the nation, but the nation itself is strong only as the little people who compose it are strong. Great leaders without a great people behind them are! not enough. Whether it be our fortune to serve in small ways or in large dramatic ways, we must be ready with our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. Qur generation must not fail our country. As the flames of war disappear, a new world will be unfolding. We may meet and direct the world's destiny. We may build a greater, freer, finer world, or we may shrink from our destiny and be carried into war, revolution, and chaos. The world will be what we make it. The coming age must be an age of reason. Already our thinkers are returning to fundamentals. We are asking, What makes a nation? What is the best form of government? What is the nature of war? of peace? Why do nations do what they do? Which are natural allies? Which are natural enemies? By studying, we must learn for what purpose we stand, and why. We must know the issue. We must not let ourselves be waylaid by the extraneous or directed by our prejudices, for we can not build a new world by artificial standards. We must seek fundamentals and truths and from there, build wisely and justly. The eighteenth century was called the Golden Age of France, in the nineteenth century, world leadership was Great Britains The twentieth century leadership, historians say, belongs to the United States. World leadership is thrust upon us by world events. l-low will we use it? For selfish gain? For exploitation, imperialism? If so, then we shall have the same sorry scheme all over again when we, the high school students of today going off to war have raised another generation to fight another war. But if we understand the responsibility our leadership brings us and are prepared for its many problems, we may be able to lead the world into the green pastures of lasting peace. America's sun is rising. The down-trodden, the oppressed, the starving, the scourged turn to us. l-low shall we best serve them? We can do it best by understanding them and the long historic years behind them'-the trends and influences and forces that have brought them and the world to their present plight. We must be able to analyze and strip the sugar-coated propaganda and see the bare essentials. Then let us build from there. All the great works of the world, all the wealth of the old philosophers, historians, mathematicians, scientists are ours to command. Napolean stares defeat in the face, Caesar is stabbed in a marble Roman hall, Socrates drinks the hemlock,-Poland is carved up again, Greece revolts, Germans fall and V-lf day comesnhpast history with the dusts of ages upon it and tomorrow's history out of today's newspaper headlineseours, if we will but grasp itl Let us then, HStudy now, and get ready, and some day our chance may come. The commissioners are appointed by the president and act as a presidents cabinet. They are: Rally Commissioner, Dance Zommissioner, Art Commissioner, Drama, Music, Radio, Athletic, Grounds, lraltic and Freshmen Commissioners. Ot primary importance to school spirit is the Rally Commissioner, who sees that our school sportsmen are baclred by our cheer eaders, leading us in the lively yells vvhich do so much for the morale ot our teams. Equally important is the Dance Commissioner, who has charge oi organizing all the school dances It is his iob to see that the :lances are a success and that the decorations lend appeal. The Art Commissioner is always busy with orders lor banners, posters and what have you, and strangely, everyone expects iis requests to be Filled in a miraculously short time. The Athletic Commissioner must lceep up interest in sports and see that the games and traclr meets are well publicized, he fvorlcs mainly with the Bloclc SM. L. championship team held positions on this year's squad, The outstanding feat of the season was a no-hit, no run, game against Se- quoia, pitched by Tom Pelizzer. The Bearcats' Field cap- tain was their popular hot-corner man, Howard Fisher. Coach Binsacca and his cinder men placed second in their annual P. A. l.. relay meet, which was held at Burlingame during a light rain storm at the beginning of the season. San Mateo baslcetball honors go to Brad Melvin and Eddie Maclc, ol the '3O's, and Tommy Pellizzer, Varsity, who were chosen all P. A. L. Coach paul Claudon coached the boys ol the Thirties and Varsity ei-lectively against strong oppostition from other schools on the peninsula. Qur Varsity came within close reach ol the First division but missed the big chance by losing to Halt Moon Bay. The 'l3O's played sparlcling ball all season and came within one game of winning the N. P. A. l.. champion- ship. The double defeat by .letierson put a stop to the Thirties' league-leading climb. VARSITY. San Mateo lhe Big-Little Game, the outstanding competition of the 1944 football season, was our traditional lhanlcsgiving Days game, with an enormous crowd and thousands of pom-poms. During the half-time, a pageant of the com- bined Burlingame and Sari Mateo Bands entertained the spectators. The game came to a climax when San Mateo won 7 to 6 over the Panthers. The San Mateo rooters were allowed to pull down the Panthers' goal posts. Briclc Williamson's lightweight basketball divisions played through a very propitious season. The 'llO's, under the leadership of lommy Fitzgerald, won the northern l3. A. L. championship but were defeated by Sequoia for the peninsula title. This team consisted en- tirely of freshmen and sophomores. Most of the boys were without the experience so important a factor in any team, but before the league season was half over, Briclc Williamson provided his boys with ample practice and the spirit of sportsmanship. The one hundred and twenties played hard ball all season, but many scores were close, and they couldn't quite reach the top of the ladder. Captain George Wallace played very consistent ball and spurred his team on to their many victories. S. l-listory class as representative. The purpose ol the Council was to avoid the misrepresentation which occurred during class assemblies and to have a more etticient class government. With this purpose in mind, Slap Forden, Junior president, drew up the Junior Class Constitution, malcing the juniors the only class to have a Constitution ot their own. The First thing accomplished by the Junior Council was the selection at the colors For senior sweaters, so the sweaters would be on hand early in the senior year. Next the juniors held the very successful Junior Jamboree, and plans were carried through for a carnival, in cooperation with the seniors. The money tor the carnival was made by the very successtul junior class candy sales. The Junior Prom proved to be one ol the best school dances ot the year. Qnenreason why the junior class is so progressive was that excellent ollicers were chosen lor ability, integrity, interest in school and class activities, and enthusiasm. Qllicers lor the fall term were Jane English, president, Diclc Leggett, viceepresident, and Gayle Mann, secretary. Cllicers lor the spring were nominated by petition. Elected were Slap Forden, president, Tom Bruce, vice-president, Sue Koshland, secretary, and Edgar Farrel, treasurer. nd , 1 L' Leaders of Lower Classmen , Q 0 Q 2? 5 ,X Loudly the An weringi Q,8 will Good-bye, Seniors... Good-bye... E ho... enior History repeats itself in many varied ways, yet few can comprehend the ideals, the hopes, the echo of those who have gone before. It is vague and dim in our ears. We only seem faintly to hear the clashes and the cries of that senior class of forty years ago. Yet as they did, we hold the unerring belief that what we say and do our ideals, and hopes, and dreamsHwill echo and resound against the portals of the future San Mateo High School. We now lcnow that the sound of their mistalces and ideals were too low and too weak to be heard by the ears of a period which sadly lacl4ed idealism and young ideas. We can only hope that by eauipping ourselves with the tools which can malce what we have to say worth hearing, our echo will be heard in a world led by those who can comprehend that tyranny and force may be controlled by democratic leaders, that future so-called war classes need never be. We are the fortieth graduating class of San Mateo, a war class. Many pity us because to them it seems that we have missed the normal life of a high school, of a country at peace. Yet we miss nothing that we have never had. Loolcing baclc over our brief four years, we will remember the war, true, but not with bitterness because it denied us the good times and privileges that previous classes had, with a normal resentment, maybe, but also with a sense of gratitude, because it gave us some comprehension of the responsibility we, the 'Awar classes, owe to the peace classes of our children. To some, their diplomas will only be a symbol of a period, a stepping stone in their lives, a thing which had to be used in order to proceed to the smoother and more polished steps of a college education. Qthers will regard their diploma as representing the only regimented or orthodox education they could ever receive. Probably this will be the group that will miss their high school life the most-Athe little things, and the big things, too: griping aboutassemblies -those we had and those we didn't, running for a class after the bell had rung, knowing we'd have to go baclt and get an admit, anyway, our favorite teacher, our favorite class. . . All of us are a little sorry it is overH-not because we envy those who have not yet finished, but because we are beginning to comprehend what those seven graduates of forty years ago meant when they said, HYour high school years are the best years of your life. They don't mean best only because those years represent freedom and irresponsibility which could never be regained, but Hbestn because those years gave them the first concept of the problems which they and the future generations would have to face. Of the seven that graduated in 1905, there was only one boy. len years after he left San Mateo, he would be fighting an almost useless war, yet the four years at the tiny St. Margaret School he called San Mateo Hi had helped him with a foundation, a personality, which would later enable him to become district attorney of San Mateo County. His world is completed. Qurs is just beginning, yet both will be guided by a period which can malce our future more complete and beneficial to the next generation. We have our diplomas. They are nothing, and yet they are everything. mi my 2 JIM TANNER FRED BENEDETTI MARILYNN BACONf GRANT BROWN BUD DAVIS Sfudenf Body Presidenf IIQIII Srudenf Body Pres. IsprinqI A. G. S.
