THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT TEACHERS in the language depart- ment not only teach students foreign languages, but try to impress upon the minds of the students the beauties, tcustoms, and legends of these coun- tries. These characteristics, along with literature and art of foreign peoples, are considered as much a part of the language course as the language it- self. Various language culture courses for students that are not particularly interested in languages per se, but feel that they would like to know more about foreign countries, are offered by these teachers. These courses, first in- stituted by San Mateo High School, have drawn considerable comment by educators throughout the state. Back row: Miss Kathryn Thrift, Mrs. Ethel Mitchell, Miss Ruth Mantz, Miss Alberta Beeson, Mr. William Gill. Front row: Miss Agnes Corcoran, Miss lean Mclntyre, Miss Hazel Wolhaupter, Miss Helen Curt., minqs, department head. Miss Lucy Collopy, Mrs. Harriet Lewis, Principal F, l. McConv1lle, department head. THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT T E N teachers comprise the English department, the largest department in the school. Past records show that an unusually high percentage of the students from this depart- ment pass the English A examination for college entrance, with consistent- ly high averages.
