These characteristics, along with literature and art of foreign peoples, are considered as much a part of the language course as the language it- self. Various language culture courses for students that are not particularly interested in languages per se, but feel that they would like to know more about foreign countries, are offered by these teachers. These courses, first in- stituted by San Mateo High School, have drawn considerable comment by educators throughout the state. Past records show that an unusually high percentage of the students from this depart- ment pass the English A examination for college entrance, with consistent- ly high averages. TYPING AN average of 150 stu- dents take typing each semester, which is taught by Mrs. Ruth Worden and Mrs. Helen Korn. Speed and accuracy tests are given at intervals during the semester to determine student progress. Highest ranking typists for the fall semester were Phyllis Koshland, Earle Schim- mele, LaVon Fontaine, Mary Weiss, Florence Herminghaus, and Mar- garet Christensen. Highest record ever made in the school was established a few semes- ters ago by Clyde Priddy, who typed 75 words a minute, with no errors, in a thirty-minute test. 7'---'fr WHEN GOOD NEWSHOUNDS GET TOGETHER UPON entering room S-l where convene daily the future O. O. Mclntyres, Henry Mcliernores, I-Iearsts, and others whose jour- nalistic aspirations may be subjects of conjecture, you get a rough idea of the school press in action, as it were. Bull sessions in this sanctuary cover everything from bum jokes heard over the radio to football games, from how to run the student government to threshing out the world's most mo- mentous problems. Subjects sacred to the high powers are dis- cussed with unrestricted frankness and trusts are never be- trayed: tales are never told out of school here. The over-ambitious spend the entire hour pecking at the type- Writers under the pretense of doing an assignment, but, in re- ality, they are only dabbling. The hunt and peck system is used almost exclusively, and various questionable mutterings are heard when mistakes are made. Webster's compilations are tossed to the wind during these brain storms. Editors are called slave drivers, rats, and other equally fas- cinating pet names, as they try to coax a story out of the hard- shelled reporters who seem always to be busy at something else. lf the editor insists on the story or else, the reporter's ever- present nimble wit comes to the fore with some such retaliation as, You're getting funnier every dayp why don't you try laugh- ing at yourself? There is ever present the noise of scraping chairs, the clack- ing of typewriters, mumblings from those trying to write a head that will fit, the blare of the band upstairs, and the foul smell emanating from the half open door of the print shop. ln the copy basket lies contributed jokes, which generally end up in Hi Leaves. Near the end of the period all is hustle and bustle trying to accomplish the hour's work' in nothing flat, with the result that the editors are usually left flatg but somehow the deadline is always made, despite misgivings. With all thy faults, l love thee still, dear old news room, and there's something about you that gets in the blood and will not be denied. J I -. ., H . THE MUSIC department of San Mateo High School ranks among the best in California high schools. lt consists of the school band. under the supervision of Eugene Brosey and the school orchestra, chorus, and A Cappella Choir, under the supervision of Hubert Dunn. The A Cappella Choir, formed about three years ago, fre- quently sings for various clubs and organizations throughout the county, as well as at school functions. At different holiday seasons of the year such as Easter, Christmas, and Memorial Day, they offer their services in a humanitarian spirit. The increased enthusiasm for music in the school and the en- rollment of more music majors, surpassing that of previous semesters, led to the organization of the Music Club, newly formed this semester, which cooperates with various other or- ganizations in the school and promotes further interest in music among its members. To fill up the club's vacancies more than twenty additional boys were inducted. The year's main activity ' 1 was sending two basket- ball teams to the South on a barnstorming tour during Christmas week. To provide the necessary funds for the trip in order that the boys would be able to spend a minimum amount of money was the greatest task. This drive was made by card parties, a food sale, a raffle, and a benefit basket- ball game. The trip proved to be highly successful, as the teams lost but two games to all opposition encountered on the trip. X' ov- fi Other activities of the Hi-Y have been distributing tuberculosis posters to the San Mateo merchants at Christmas time and a campaign conducted around San Mateo High School to clean up the grounds and keep the campus clean. The l-li-Y was repre- . sented at the northern Hi-Y convention at Berke- ley by Walt Selover. The club is planning for some of its members to attend the Y summer camp at Pescadero. ln all its ac- tivities, the group strives to carry out the purpose of the organiza- tionp namely, to create, maintain, and ex- tend throughout the home, church, school, and community higher standards of Christian fellowship. The school group operates as a unit with the community HiY 'fi' ,ex . . ' ff fig, Ji f y!
