Wfe realize that in the selection of our art editor we had a boy of unusual artistic talents. We took advantage of this opportunity by devot- ing the planning of our budget and the very book itself to the develop- ment of the artistic theme. The resulting annual is, we feel confident, truly a thing of beautyf' our sincere hope is that you may find it to be a joy forever. I Writteii and designed by the students themselves, printed in our own shop, and bound in the school bindery, the Elm is truly a cooperative student enterprise. As such, it has become a part of school life at San Mateo High School. I have had an opportunity to see the advance sheets, and I wish to compliment Mrs. Mitchell, the staff, and all students who have helped to make the Elm of this ycar an outstanding number in that long series which goes back more than thirty years at San Mateo. FRANCIS J. MCCONVILLE PRINCIPAL During this past year, I had :pgortunity to meet and greet many of the students of the San Mateo High School. The friendly attitude of all has helped to make work more pleasant and more worthwhile. As the seniors go forth on their various paths and the others continue their school work, that same San Mateo friendliness will, I feel sure, spread out and help bring about stronger loyalties, and greater suc- cess and happiness in both work and, play. Jvnnic- Suslin The Coed in Sports ANKING FOREMOST among the extra curricular activities of the San Mateo - High School are girls' sports. The Girls' Athletic Council and the Girls' Block S. M. are the governing bodies of these athletics. The managers of the various sports comprise the Girls' Athletic Council while the Block S. M. Society consists of those girls who have not only achieved 250 points by participating in after-school sports, but have fulfilled the standard requirements of sportsmanship and character. Wfithont a doubt. the most popular sport is basketball, considering the huge turnout every season. The basketball season is divided into two divisions, upper classmen and lower classmen. According to the age-old tradition, however, the seniors always come through with the highest score. but they always have to put up a fight for it. Following close in popularity is that black and blue shin game, hockey, under the excellent coaching of Miss Helen McArthur. This same coach also gives lessons in lifeasaving, and the qualified swimmers are awarded Red Cross Life-Saving emblems at the end of the season. Fencing, having recently become a major sport, is constantly growing in popularity. The girls participating in this sport have formed a Fencers: Club which has become a thriving and active organization. VF M Speedball and baseball also draw a great many point seekers each semester. Tennis. as a minor sport, calls for exciting singles and doubles matches. This semester, under the supervision of the Ci. A. C., badminton mixed doubles tournaments have been staged. Since boys and girls participate in this sport no points are awarded. These tournaments have proved so popular that they will undoubtedly be continued in the future. San Mateo is very fortunate in being able to offer such a variety of sports to so great a number of girls. These extra-curricular activities give girls a goal toward which to strive, and help to build clean and healthy bodies and minds. I ige Tncnty-four Life Saving lsnlwl Mcfflinlm-k. iinllxlm-4-n I.Iml. A. l.. round-robin dual schedule and climaxed the season with the annual all-league short pants and long puffs affair on Stanford University's Angel Field. The Bearcats set up two new records in the l30-pound division where they made their best showing. ,lay Bush ran the l60-yard low timbers in 119.5 and VVillert Allen, Ray Hennning, Floyd XVimbcrly. and jay llush combined their best efforts to smash the 880-yard baton-passing mark. The time was l:34.6 while the former relay record stood at l:36.Z. TENNIS Captain Tom Daly. state ranking junior player, saw the net squad through to a successful season. The netsters pounded easy victories out of Burlingame, Sequoia. San jose. and South San Francisco. Palo Alto, however. won the l . A. L. dual play title when it became the only school to survive the Bearcat team's attack. Tom Daly played number one singles: jerry Selover. sensational freshman, number two: and VVard Namlok or George Chiossi, number three. The doubles combinations varied between ,lack Johnston, Bob Owens. and Rudy Pribuss. SWIMMING The ever-rising power of Matean swimmers continued on its upward trend this season. in a sensational style. For the past four years Bearcat mermen have continually drawn closer to the rulers of peninsula water-ways, Sequoia and Palo Alto. This year the locals overwhelmed both and brought home the first swimming title in the history of the school. The new experience came in the 130-pound division. Tom Dooling proved himself the outstanding P. A. L. paddler of the season. He took the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, hanging up a new record of 226.3 in the shorter dash. Pete Helms. breast stroker, took his event and the Mateans ended first in the four-man relay and second in the medley. l-Bok Reitzel tied the lZ0's 100-yard freestyle record. BASEBALL The baseball team ended midway in the most unorthodox league campaign of P. L. history. lt was the first year a double round-robin program has been used and the race had an absolute lack of an outstanding title contender. San Nlateo's ace hurler, Harry Cahalan, gave the peninsula the most outstanding pq,-formative when he pitched no-run. no-hit ball for eleven hectic innings against Jefferson High. H H an Page Thirty-three Leaves From a Senior's Diary January 27. NVho ever said, And the meek shall inherit the earth ? just decided today that the author of that line must have had a heavy date the night before he pronounced those immortal words on account of becuz it's the truth, and verily so, that the seniors shall inherit the earth . All of this blarney leads up to the fact that two events happened today, towit: 1. School opened. 2. I went downtown and bought a hat five sizes larger than my last one. February 9. Blue to the right of us, blue to the left of us, blue all around us. Blue. The senior sweaters arrived today, much to the seniors' dismay, including mine. February 15. Now we're all tuberculin tested, just like cows, Some county officials were 'round school today to stick insignificant looking needles into our arms. They say th'ey'rc trying to determine our immunity to tuberculosis, a red spot appearing after the test tells the story. Seen in the halls: Rolled-up shirt-sleeves, and worried expressions! February 24. Smile purty for the camera, please! You see, dear diary, the seniors had their pictures taken for the Elm todayg God save the Elm! The only disadvantage of the ordeal was that we had to stay away from class for about fifteen minutes while we posed ! The boys, poor lambs, wore fake tuxedoes for the event, and the gals wore sortof kindof drapes around their necks. The number of potential Garbos and Gables was most overwhelming. April 10. San Mateo high, good ol' studying grounds, was literally infested with a bunch of brainstorms today. The California Scholarship Federation Chonor society stuffj held a convention here, and boys and gals came from all over the state to visit our school. Of course, the fact that Dr. Robert Millikan, famed physicist, was the guest speaker had little to do with the case! April 13. No runs, no hits, and no errors because Harry's a high senior. The mighty pitcher Cahalan made a real baseball name for himself today when he didn't give the Jefferson High School nine a single scoring chance by dint of his pitching prowess. They say that to pitch a no run, no hits game is really doing something, so we're taking their word for it. May 5. Senior assemblies are a riot, and no less. There's no doubt about ity our class is just too, too dignified for words! Everyone would like to talk at the sam-e time that everyone else does, but heroic Ifresident Ray Hemming miraculously manages to keep no more than two people talking at the same tim-e. How disillusioned the froshies would be if they attended a high senior conclave. May 6. The seniors on the top, as usual! Martha Guenther, Rosemary Bell, and Ruth Roberts did themselves proud in a Fidac essay contest by chalking up first, second, and honorable mention honors, respectively. Their subject was HHOW Can International Disputes Be Settled in the Spirit of Fidac? Wow! Emmett Collins, also a senior Cwouldn't ya know?D got first prize for another subject-'twas something about Amerieanism. May 12. Aha! So that's how we look in our informal moments! Senior old clothes day was today, and the powers that be Cusj took full advantage of the event. Everyone blossomed out in his or her favoritest rags, and they weren't glad rags . May 19. That lucky Junior Collegeg can't figure out what they've ever done to deserve such an honor. VVC visited 'em today! ,Twas a special visiting day for all high seniors, and it was very nice. They had all sorts of things planned to make our visit a real success. june 10. The day has come, the X'V3ll'US said, to think of many things . . . But this time there's no walrus in the ease, and only one thing to think about-graduation! High school days have ended' for us. perhaps, but one thing will never end-memories of the four rip-snortin' years we've had! Page Thirty-four 9 WM W Eqzfb if 12' M A7170 Zire IA? 7591?
