MISS HELEN McLERAN MR. JACK BRADFORD COUNSELORS But how do I know whether or not l'll like that college? Do you think I can carry five solid courses? My teachers give me too much homework! If these problems have a familiar ring you probably are well acquainted with one of the quartet above. Every student is assigned to a counselor who, through frequent gripe and guidance sessions, helps him make those important decisions of his high school career. The incoming freshman first meets his counselor in the capacity of orientation teacher. Working together throughout all four years of high school, the two get to know each other well and the counselor can better advise the student concerning future plans. MRS. CAROL FLANAGAN MR. MISS EMILY WALTERS MR- PHIL STEPHENS VICE PRINCIPALS Did you ever spend a noon period waiting in the hall between the vice- principals' offices, wondering when one of the doors would open? Did you ask yourself, What could they possibly be doing in there for so long? And probably when the 1:55 bell rang, the doors opened and a student or two emerged from each. Who were they? One might have been the wise guy who set fire to a trash can the day before. Maybe one was a senior with questions about college board exams, an AFS exchange student, the Girls' League president, or a Student Council member. All of these students come under the direct supervision of a vice-principal. Discipline of all four classes is a maior responsibility handled by the two, college entrance requirements and vocational guidance of seniors is another. Besides many other duties, Miss Walters is head sponsor of the Girls' League and over-all supervisor of the counseling system. Mr. Stephens serves as Boys' Forum sponsor and advisor to Student Council, representing the principal. 15

OFFICE STAFF lt has been said that if every secretary in the United States should take the same day off, business would be forced to a standstill. This statement is open to argu- ment, of course, but one thing is sure. San Marino High School would be in a rather pathetic state if these three, its office staff, should be among the missing. In the main office, with Miss Taylor gone, the telephone would ring endlessly, no call could reach its destination since the master switchboard would be inactive. Sup- plies could not be issued to teachers, Mr. Dingus would be minus a secretary, and no receptionist would greet and direct visitors. Things would be no better down the hall in the at- tendance office. Who's absent? Does that alibi deserve an excused tardy pass? Nobody would know without Miss McClain to keep up-to-the-minute accounts of who is where, when. And can you imagine the confusion in the guidance office? There, a crowd of assorted students and coun- selors would be vainly trying to get together for con- ferences. lt's a nice trick if you can do it without request slips, appointments, and scheduling. Miss Boyle's ab- sence would be especially noticeable at report card time, since recording and filing grades is another of her maior projects.
