Under the leader- ship of Commissioner-General, Frank l.offcr, who emceed the assemblies with ease and grace, the Commission worked long and hard for the better- ment of the student body. Managing A. ll. sales this year were janet Olson and .loc Peatman who brought the sales up to 95 per cent. Carole Strahan and Greg Danninger handled the Girls' and Boys' Leagues, respectively, while jim Knerr kept the students posted on Athletics. Marguerite Addoms recorded the minutes of each Commis- sion meeting and Tom Shepard saw to it that the campus was kept clean. Publicizing school activi- ties was Ronnie Slardigan who kept the commu- nities well informed via the newspapers. Raising money for the A. B. funds the Com- mission sponsored a novelty program in the form of the Fire House Five Plus Two. The dixic- land band played to a packed auditorium on Feb- ruary I8, thrilling its listeners with renditions of typical old dixieland. The Queen of Hearts Ball , held on October 20 saw the crowning of the football queen, as the Commissioners present- ed their annual fall dance. Busy, ambitious, hard-working - the 1951-52 Commission! Iflglqx. Frank Lamrnadee and Eloise Taylor quarrel constantly in their portrayal of a young married couple in The W'edding,', presented by the Cloak and Dagger. CLUHK HND DHGGER Under the guidance of Mr. Richard O. Wilson, the Cloak and Dagger had a busied and varied year. To fulfill the purpose of working together as a club in serving the school, the members par- ticipated in the Christmas assembly and enter- tained the student body with two one-act plays, The Wedding , and The Honeymoon Is Over. The first concerned the confusion and difficulties that can occur at a wedding, while the second revealed the same couple several months later. Taking leading roles were Eloise Taylor and Frank Lammadee. The cast also in- 66 cluded Bronson Berlin, Charles Buck, Sally Phil- lips, Dick Kirtland, and Sunny Everett. Linda Ruddy was the student director. One-act plays were also given at the monthly meetings. To better appreciate various phases of drama, the club went on several theater parties, attending the Pasadena Playhouse and the Sartu Thea- ter in Hollywood. Officers for the year were Bryan Sutton, president, Judy johnson, vice- president, Sunny Everett, secretary, and Chuck Dickerson, treasurer. The year ended with the installation of new officers. South Pasadena played host this year to a playday which included girls from Burbank, Glendale, and VVhittier. Held December 3, the activities began with registration at 1:15. A talent assembly followed with dances and singing. Yell leaders from the different schools led the group in yells and songs. Sharon Heaton, chairman of the Girls' League Sports Committee, was chairman for the day. The sports events included basketball, baseball, badminton, ping-pong, tennis, volleyball, speedball, and hockey. South Pasadena won all of the events with Bur- bank and VVhittier placing second and third respectively. H 'W Opening the girls' sport season each year is volleyball, always enthusiastically anticipated by everyone. After the election of captains and the choosing of teams, Judie Barnes and her sixth period team emerged victorious over the others and won the honor of playing the faculty. The girls won this encounter, 40-29. Next on the sports agenda was speedball, fol- lowed by hockey. Each quarter brought a difier- ent sport, but tennis, badminton, and modern dance were offered during the entire year. The final sports of the year were basketball and base- ball. SHARON HEATON Girly' Leagrte Sports Chairman UDEBN DANCE Modern dance, although a newcomer to the physical education curriculm, has already estab- lished a solid place as a regular activity at South Pas. Under the direction of Mrs. .Nlurietta Schick, the beginning and advanced classes danced every Monday and XVednesday. As pzlfl' of their work the advanced group presented two numbers in the annual Christmas assembly. ln their dance in the Christmas program, the girls presented Pains Angelicasv, in which they portrayed a very dramatic religious mood. Fun in the snow was depicted in the second number, Sleigh Bells . 'lihe latter was a lively dance in which the girls wore tiny bells on the hems of their skaters' costumes for a more realistic effect. Approximately thirty-eight girls participated in this program. In addition to teaching the basic steps and techniques of dancing, modern dance offers an excellent opportunity for developing personal and rhythmic expression. From now on Modern Dance will be presented as a regular course in the physical education program, and every girl will be given an opportunity to take part in this new phase of physical education if she so wishes. Mrs. Schick finds time from her job of raising three children now in elementary school to in- struct the classes twice a week. She graduated from Santa Barbara State College where she maiored in dance. Her teaching experience has been at Bakersfield, and she has done substitute work in the Pasadena Schools area. Mrs. Schick is pleased with the good material she has had to work with this year, and likes the enthusiasm shown by her classes.
