Convention! Arabs To Rock Punk rockers, Arabs, big-time gang- sters, and a beach party invading San Marcos? That's exactly what it looked like outside the auditorium on the morning of March 1 1, as excited students waited for Convention 1980 to get underway. Then at 8:00 AM. the doors were opened and 400 people surged in, dressed in the out- rageous costumes ofthe day and filled with enthusiasm. Preparation forthe event began long before the actual convention. Classes had to vote for delegates, who in turn were required to spend lunch periods lis- tening to speeches from potential candi- dates. On the day before the convention, students took on the job of decorating the auditorium, Palm trees, melted records, political posters, and crepe paper streamers were just a few ofthe oddities to be seen. All through the day chaos could be felt inthe air. Demonstrations and speeches were given among the ever present cheers and cat-calls, and voting became tiresome as the afternoon wore on and delegates began leaving. This year's convention boasted a spe- cial guest, a pseudo-Russian Communist -who stirred peoples emotions until he was exposed as being an actor. The con- vention ended a record one and a halt hours ahead of schedule, at 5:30 P.M., with the rap of the gavel and a round of cheers. fa 86 CONVENTION
