The '80 Team played ball the best way it could, combining remark- able quickness with great teamwork to complete a regular season of 23-O. A strong starting line led the Royals to many victories, but the great depth of the team reserves proved to be an asset as several players came oft the bench to help win games. ln pre-league play, the Royals woh the CAPHER and Cabrillo Classic Tournaments. League games brought two major triumphs over Dos Pueblos. One marked Coach Halleck's 300th game win and the second clinched the Channel League Title. As recognition was gained, San Mar- cos seemed to dominate the Channel League all around. Jon Korfas was voted Most Valuable Player, while Anthony Hunter and Mike Fitzgerald were first team selections. Jett Again was a second team choice, and Gerry Karczewski received honorable memtions. Coach Halleck was also honored, for the second consecutive year, as Channel League Coach ofthe Year. In CIF action, San Marcos headed in as one of the top teams. Theri fast running break proved to be too much for oppo- nent New Bury Park as they tell 888-70. Second round action brought stiff com- petition from Pasadena. Their quickness skill and great height seemed to be more than the Might Royals expected as post-season play came to an end. The success outweighed the mishaps by a long shot- school records were broken and individual triumphs were achieved. The San Marcos Royal Basket- ball team may have tinished their season with a loss, but as Coach Halleck reflected, l look at it as ending the sea- son with 24 wins! 4. Time Passes, J. V.s lmpro ve Hours of hard work and team dedica- tion developed this year's JV Basketball team. Improving as the season prog- ressed, they racked up an overall 1 I-9 season, with many of the games being decided in the final minutes. Well deserved victories over Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Buena earned the Royals the Santa Barbara JV Tournament Title for the first time in over seven years. John Coste was named Most Valuable Player, and Chris Abreu was named to the All- Tournament Team. To a squad that really tried, praise was received from Coach VVard as he com- mented, l'm really proud of their efforts. Outstanding performances were also noted when the team chose Eric Behvvoldt, IVIost Valuable Player, Eric Diehl, Most Inspirational Player, and Gyasi Subira, lvlost Improved Player. JV BASKETBALL.
