Sophs Top Dons And D. P. The Sophomores played really hard this year, they deserved to win more than they did. Ouoted from one student, this described the Sophomore football team. With coaches Hal Kil- minster and Harvey Campbell and assistance by John Knapp and Steve Puailoa, the team benefited from excellent leadership. However the team had a season of dramatic highs and disappointing lows. They were hit by many problems right from the start. injuries to Jeff Barens and Bard Sal- cido placed the burden of signal call- ing on Kevin Todd, in the later part of the season. With outstanding help from players like Mark Mester, the Royals had decisive wins against Oxnard, Dos Pueblos and Santa Bar- bara. ln these games they played well and had fantastic victories. Overall, the Sophomore football team went through an enthusiastic year. 1. Quarterback Jeff Barens hands off to Craig Gar- cia in ahome game. 2. 22 GIRLS' Coaching Efforts Pay Off The girls' varsity volleyball team played a tough season. Under the guidance of Coach Tom Shoji, the team ran up an overall record of 13-3, and took the run- ner-up spot in the Channel League. In the C.I.F. playoffs, the girls were on the road for both matches. In the first they triumphed over Louisville but they were unable to overcome a strong Santa Monica team in the second, and were out of the playoffs. The junior varsity squad had some true learning experiences. ln addition to work- ing on the techniques of the game, they learned how to recruit. Faced with the problem of no coach, they went out and found one in alum, Elise McConnell. Under her hand, .they went on to finish in a tie for first in the league. 1. Nicky Barling launches a game opening serve. 2. Players rally around the coach for a few words of strategy before a match. 3. As Cindy Cole and Dan Engel look on, MVP Joyce Bowie gets set to meet the ball. 4. ln the match against Hueneme, Joyce Bowie spikes the ball, as teammates Julie Ceder- berg and Anne Stelter await the possible return. 3
