Beginnings Come To Life Although many people took on the atti- tude that the '80s could be a new begin- ning, most expected something to hap- pen by itself. A few people, however, took action to initiate new experiences. Patti Hartland Becky Connor, from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh, Pennsyl- vania respectively, came to San Marcos to start the new decade with a rare expe- rience. Before they came to Santa Barbara, they imagined that it was one giant beach, sporting groups of hippies and weirdos with surfboards. After arriving, these stereotypes soon vanished. Although they did find the beach, sun, and very often clear blue skies, they also discovered that the people and commu- nity were very friendly. People went out of their way to help us. Home for both students had a much more conservative atmosphere. Here they were given more freedom, and atti- tudes at school seemed more mature and more at ease. To get here thy applied through the AFS club at their home school. They wrote essays, went to interviews, and filled out 'ttons of forms. All though they each had preferences about where they would like to go, they were given no real choice. Both now agree that California was a terrific place to spend an exchange semester. They described their AFS experience as being a really good one, saying that it made them appreciate their old schools, friends, and families. V , ,ix 'vm- s - ....
