STILLMAN Principal To the San Marcos High School Stu- dent Body: As we approach the end of the first year in our new home, we can look back and regard this as a year of achievement. You, as a student body, have comeofage. You have successfully established a fine student government and operated it under able leadership. You have supported your school in all of its undertakings with a spirit that is becoming known throughout our community. The Royals have proved they know how to lose as well as to win. You have accepted the challenge of the twentieth century for developing out- standing citizens and scholars. Our school academic record indicates that you have approached your studies with good intent and purpose. On behalf of the faculty and adminis- tration, I would like to take thisopportu- nity to give you our congratu ations. Thanks for another Royal year. Very sincerely yours, AD IN ISTRATIO MR. Meza fullback THE 1959 SEASON The 1959 Royal eleven, the nucleus of which was made up of a strong line and fast backs, started the season by running over Lompoc 14-13 on Lompoc gridiron. On September 25, the Royals played and won their first home game of the 1959 season, stampeding Carpinteria 44-O before about 3,000 fans. October 3 was one of the blackest days for the San Marcos fans as St. Francis, a powerful team from Pasadena, walked all over the Royals by running up a score of 63- O. T e San Marcos eleven overwhelmed their opposition when they traveled to the Ojai Valley to play Nordhoff. The Royals ran up a score of 20-0 in the blistering heat of the valley in their first Frontier League ame. g Royals next traveled to play Camarillo, this game turned out to be a heartbreaker for the San Marcos eleven as they lost a hard fought encounter to the Camarillo Scorpions 7-6. Bad breaks, including fumbles and freak pass interceptions, produced this setback for the Royals. On October 30, the Royals journeyed south to play the Fillmore Flashes at Fillmore, The hard charginfg Fillmore line and a good faking quarterback proved to be the deciding actors as the Flashes defeated San Marcos 26-6. The following weekend William S. Hart came north and made it three losses in a row for the Royals as the team from Newhall won a hard fought 7-0 victory. This is considered by many to be one of the best games played by the Royals as Hart was the top team in the Frontier Lea ue. gA week later the Royals played for the last time during the 1959 campaign as they met the powerful Pt. Hueneme team. It was a very hard fought game and the Royals twice came from behind to tie Hueneme with a final score of 13-13. A. Coach Stansbury is pleased with his team's improvement and is confident of a brighter future as the season progresses. Amazing as it seems, the horse hiders won their first nine games without encountering a loss. The Season opener found the Royals travelling south to Ventura, where they met the Ventura Cougars, and won by the slim margin of 5-3. The next games saw the Royals winning a doubleheader against Santa Ynez by scores of 15-l and 8-O. They then played the always tough Villanova Cats and won easily 14-3. The Royals entered the Carpinteria Tournament and finished as co-champions with Villanova. In the first round they played Santa Ynez and won 8-3, and they then beat Camarillo by 6-3. ln the finals The Royals battled Villanova in an exciting game, which had to be c alle d on account of darkness with the score tied at 4-4 after eight innings. After the tournament, Santa Paula fell victim to the Royal nine by a score of 16-O. The next games were heart-breakers as San Marcos lost two tough ones to Santa Clara by scores of 13-12 and 5-2. The school nine then had it easy as they de fea ted Santa Paula 12-1. The strong Port Hueneme team then beat the Royals 4-0. In the last two games be- fore annual press time, San Marcos pla ye d a doubleheader against Ventura and lost both by scores of 6-2 and 13-2. The highlight of the season, up to this point, occurred in the final game of the Carpinteria Tournament when Harry Bowie hit a home run to tie the game at four all and send it into overtime. f A 17, Il sr ALLEN CALLIHAN BOB JONES JOE GARFOLLO LARRY KESSINGER pitcher catcher 1 first-baseman outfielder ...xx JERRY PIERSON JERRY WALTERS JIM HILTON DENNIS VOLPE pitcher second baseman third-baseman shortstop BOYS' SWI TEAM ROW ONE: J.
