S A Bears Fight Their ay to State Finals In aco At the beginning of the soccer season the fantastic soccer team has a dream, or more likely a goal, for which they work hard to accomplish. A discouraging nightmare of three losses in a row doesn't stop the Bears for their search to find out what it is like to be Number One!!! Injuries and bad luck don't stop the Bears when they go to the St. An- thony Tournament. Even though they do not take first place, they fight until the end and by the time it is finished, the team has the confidence that is required to be part of the State Finalist. The team continues to have an up and down season until they get to the St Stephens Tournament where they achieve two victories including the only undefeated team at the tourna- ment, Central Catholic. This gives them a proud second place finish in the tourney. A couple of weeks later, the team gets invited to Waco to play in the State Finals. Not only were they in- vited but they were one of the favorites to take it all, The big game comes when SMA plays the first match against the favorites, and even though it is the best game that the Bears have played in a long time, they lose by a goal after a double-over time. They finish up in third place at the State Finals after beating Bishop Dunn. When it is all over, Luis Diaz, Mike Pollard, and Matt Haynes are recognized as All-State Soccer Players.
