Mike Fisher Lee Hollister Butch Iones Steve Larson First Base Second Base, Right Field Pitcher Third Base Varsit Baseball Looking for their third consecutive GLF. AA championship the Tigers under Coach Iohn Dodge have the potential to go all the way, but whether they will come up with the team work to make it a reality, remains to be seen. The Bengals dropped their first two games to Taft in a double header in the oil town and two more to Ventura before settling down to win their next six games. Mel Queen, proud possessor of last year's C.l.F. Player of the Year, and first team short stop awards, as well as All-Conference first team short stop, led the Tigers in the first game of a twin win over the Santa Maria Saints. Mel belted out two hits in two times at bat, while Bill Pierce collected two for three. Bob Meacham went the dis- tance in the opener, while Butch Iones and lim Lonborg shared the nightcap. ln their first league outing of the season, the Tigers blanked the Atascadero Grey- hounds 9-U, as Iones and Lonborg again combined for the victory. Mel Queen and Floyd Lewelling both collected circuit clouts for the Bengals. ln their second league game the Bengals edged the Arroyo Grande Eagles 8-7. lt took a sixth inning save by Queen to keep the Dodgemen from falling from the top of the league standings. Fisher had walked with one away in the sixth, but was forced at second as Larson made it to first, Queen, who had been issued an inten- tional walk with two outs in the fourth was expecting another free pass as the signal was given to Eagle chucker lack Reed by his coach. Qn the first pitch Reed crossed up Queen by tossing an easy one right down the middle. Queen smiled as he took the called strike and Reed was quite proud of his strategy, He then threw three inten- tional balls to Queen. Qn the fifth pitch Queen, ready for this one, lashed it out over the Eagle outfielders. Butch Iones then put the Eagles down in the seventh. With Queen again showing his power in a 10 hit attack by the Tigers, the Atasca- dero Greyhounds fell before the Bengals 17-U. Queen collected two homers and a single, Bill Pierce homered in the third, while Mike Fisher, last year's C.l.F. and All- Conference first team first baseman, hit a double and a single. ln their third league play, the Dodgemen failed to combine their defensive game with their hitting. While collecting ll hits, they made costly errors in the field which gave the Lompoc Braves a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. In the opener, circuit blows by Dale Salyer and Mike Fisher could not make up for the timely hits by the Lompoc team. The Bengals have an experienced infield with Queen, Fisher, and third sacker Steve Larson having played together on last year's Championship team. The pitching staff of all-league player Floyd Lewelling, lim Lonborg, Butch Iones, and Bob Meacham is strong, but with the schedule of 32 games this season, it certainly has its work cut out. All we can do as we go to press at this time is to wish the Tiger Nine good luck! N .1 Coach Iohn Dodge
