What the Bengals suffered from lack of experience, they tried to make up for in courage and backed away from no oneg taking on such opponents as the strong Mater Dei Monarchs and North Bakersfield. Facing the power-packed, confident, Santa Maria Saints for their last game of the season, the Tigers battled their way with enthusiasm and ended their schedule with a spectacular aerial display. lf they had not lost their senior end, lohn Telles, due to an injury, the Tiger attack, usually confined to the ground, could have taken better ad- vantage of the good arms of Iohn Lewis and Bill Pierce. Working under the quarterbacking of lohn Lewis most of the season, the Tigers had veteran senior Phil Prijatel and junior Wilbur Owens, backed by hard running sophomores Tom Sweeney and Don Frazier at halfback. Fullback Tony Boyle proved to be equal to his chore and should be one of the best next year. End positions were held by Ioe Bowlby, Bob Ver- cruse and Fred Lewis. Up front, the tackle spots were manned by Rick Leguina and big Mike McCune. At guards were senior Mike Fisher and junior Clint Lebo. No one found it easy to get through either Lynn Wynn or Bruce Messer at center. On defense Ierry Diefenderfer and Bill White served notice to the League that they will be tough to deal with next year. Co-captained by Prijatel and Fisher, the green Tigers played a schedule of which they can be proud and gained the needed experience which should make them a team to beat next year. At the end of the season the team elected Phil Prijatel the most valuable backg Mike Fisher, the most valuable lineman and honorary captain. loe BOWHJY Tony Boyle Ierry Dieienderfer End Fullback Tackle Don Frazier Fred Gottfried Bill Iesperson H jerry Keen Halfback Fullback Tackle-Center Tackle 'f .2192 I

SLG l4 Port l-lueneme 6 Laboring under heat and smog in an afternoon game with the Vik- ings at Port l-fueneme, the Tigers collected their first win. The Tigers counted early in the opening period when fullback Tony Boyle ran 50 yards for a touchdown. During the same quarter, after a 45 yard punt by lohn Lewis put the Vikings with their backs against the goal line, tackle ferry Diefenderfer dropped a Viking halfback behind the goal for two points. In the fourth auarter lohn Lewis galloped 50 yards for the Tiger final touchdown. SLO 33 Atascadero 33 lntroducing a surprise attack on the very first play of the game, quarterback Iohn Lewis threw a pass to Phil Priiatel for a perfect 62 yard touchdown. ln the second quarter, Lewis came up with another precision throw, again to Priiatel, which was good for 38 yards and another touchdown. A third touchdown was set up with SLO l2 Lompoc 19 The Tigers outplayed the Lompoc Braves in total offense, but penalties and fumbles moved in again to spoil their chance to win the Home- coming Game. Defensive standouts for the Bengal eleven were tackles Rick Leguina and ferry Diefender- fer, center Lynn Wynn, and lohn Lewis. Hard-running fullback Tony Boyle gained lOl yards. a 69 yard Lewis to Priiatel pass. With an inspired, hard- hitting Bengal line opening up the Hounds defense, the Tigers started the fourth quarter with a two touchdown lead. lf the Tuttlemen defense could have contained the Atascadero star, Nettleton, the Tiger hopes of moving out on their cellar mates would have been realized. 20
