A junior class production of outstanding quality and achievement! Under the skilled direction of Mr. Richard Yeo, Cry Havoc's potential of drama and meaning was transformed into an active creation. Ten army nurses, bunked in an abandoned-gun-emplacement-turned-bomb-shelter on Bataan, struggle to save the wounded and dying and at the same time to preserve some measure of their dignity and femininity during the bloodiest heights of World War ll in the Philippine theater. Doc Marsh, a veteran surgeon dedicated to his work, and Smitty, a taciturn young woman hardened by war who serves as Doc's right-hand nurse, are carrying on the work of maintaining a mobile hospital unit at the front despite their own waning endurance and shortages of supplies and additional help. When relief comes in the form of eight green civilian volunteers, it requires the combined supervision of Doc and Smitty plus the morale-boosting optimism of big-hearted Flo Harris, another enlisted nurse assisting Smitty, to rid the new girls of their initial terror and steel them for the work they must do. Amid the bombing and slaughter of the days that follow, many personal tragedies and sacrifices occur and each girl undergoes subtle changes in character and out- look, but all find warmth in companionship and service. An unknown spy, a case of insanity, and an orphaned native baby com- plicate Smitty's burden of responsibility as the lapanese draw a steadily tightening ring around the island, finally smothering all possibility of evacua- tion or reinforcement. Yet, although the play ends with a despairing wail from the baby and the girls ascend to face the machine guns of the victorious Iapanese, a clear note of hope remains vibrating in the stirring strains of Battle Hymn of the Republic, and in the knowledge that the inherent good of the individual has again triumphed over the forces of evil.
