Atascadero 33 . . . Lompoc 19 . . Santa Maria 33 Coach Tuttle was faced with a major rebuilding job this year after the Bengals lost most of their bite through graduation. What the Bengals suffered from lack of experience, they tried to make up for in courage and backed away from no oneg taking on such opponents as the strong Mater Dei Monarchs and North Bakersfield. Facing the power-packed, confident, Santa Maria Saints for their last game of the season, the Tigers battled their way with enthusiasm and ended their schedule with a spectacular aerial display. lf they had not lost their senior end, lohn Telles, due to an injury, the Tiger attack, usually confined to the ground, could have taken better ad- vantage of the good arms of Iohn Lewis and Bill Pierce. Working under the quarterbacking of lohn Lewis most of the season, the Tigers had veteran senior Phil Prijatel and junior Wilbur Owens, backed by hard running sophomores Tom Sweeney and Don Frazier at halfback. Fullback Tony Boyle proved to be equal to his chore and should be one of the best next year. End positions were held by Ioe Bowlby, Bob Ver- cruse and Fred Lewis. Up front, the tackle spots were manned by Rick Leguina and big Mike McCune. At guards were senior Mike Fisher and junior Clint Lebo. No one found it easy to get through either Lynn Wynn or Bruce Messer at center. On defense Ierry Diefenderfer and Bill White served notice to the League that they will be tough to deal with next year. Co-captained by Prijatel and Fisher, the green Tigers played a schedule of which they can be proud and gained the needed experience which should make them a team to beat next year. At the end of the season the team elected Phil Prijatel the most valuable backg Mike Fisher, the most valuable lineman and honorary captain. loe BOWHJY Tony Boyle Ierry Dieienderfer End Fullback Tackle Don Frazier Fred Gottfried Bill Iesperson H jerry Keen Halfback Fullback Tackle-Center Tackle 'f .2192 I .44 Bruce Messer Center Q 4 . SLG l4 Port l-lueneme 6 Laboring under heat and smog in an afternoon game with the Vik- ings at Port l-fueneme, the Tigers collected their first win. The Tigers counted early in the opening period when fullback Tony Boyle ran 50 yards for a touchdown. During the same quarter, after a 45 yard punt by lohn Lewis put the Vikings with their backs against the goal line, tackle ferry Diefenderfer dropped a Viking halfback behind the goal for two points. In the fourth auarter lohn Lewis galloped 50 yards for the Tiger final touchdown. SLO 33 Atascadero 33 lntroducing a surprise attack on the very first play of the game, quarterback Iohn Lewis threw a pass to Phil Priiatel for a perfect 62 yard touchdown. ln the second quarter, Lewis came up with another precision throw, again to Priiatel, which was good for 38 yards and another touchdown. A third touchdown was set up with SLO l2 Lompoc 19 The Tigers outplayed the Lompoc Braves in total offense, but penalties and fumbles moved in again to spoil their chance to win the Home- coming Game. Defensive standouts for the Bengal eleven were tackles Rick Leguina and ferry Diefender- fer, center Lynn Wynn, and lohn Lewis. Hard-running fullback Tony Boyle gained lOl yards. a 69 yard Lewis to Priiatel pass. With an inspired, hard- hitting Bengal line opening up the Hounds defense, the Tigers started the fourth quarter with a two touchdown lead. lf the Tuttlemen defense could have contained the Atascadero star, Nettleton, the Tiger hopes of moving out on their cellar mates would have been realized. 20 SLO l8 Santa Maria 33 After playing their best during the first half all season, the Bengals reversed themselves and came up with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, to end their grid sea- son. Wilbur Cwens put the Tigers on the scoreboard first, going over the last three yards after a 60 yard drive, which saw quarterback Bill Pierce hit Priiatel with a pass good for 35 yards. Becovery of an onside kick and a penalty against the Saints, put the Bengals on the Saints' 28 yard line where in seven plays Pierce went into the end zone for the Tiger score. Tackle Bick Leguina recovered a Saint fumble on the Tiger 36 to set the stage for a tremendous last ditch aerial display by the Bengals. Pierce threw to Priiatel for a 29 yard pass to the Santa Maria 35, then tossed to Gwens for l7 yards, hit Priiatel again for 6 and then pitched to fullback Tony Boyle for the touchdown with just 27 seconds remaining in the game. SLO 6 Paso Robles l9 The Tigers turned in their best game of the season while suffering a loss to the Bear- cats in their first league game. Out-playing the Bearcats statistically the outcome might have been different had the Bengals not lost their running and defensive, Letterman, half- back Phil Prijatel early in the second quar- ter with a turned ankle. The Tigers, with lohn Lewis guarterbacking drew first blood SLO 7 North Bakersfield 20 The Tigers still locking for their first win of the season put on a surprising perform- ance and scared the twinkle out of the visit- ing Ncrth Bakersfield Stars before losing a game that they went into as a four touch- down underdog. The Tigers led the Stars for the better part cf three quarters and then X faded as the North Bakersfield depth began to tell. With Mike lVlcCune charging in and blocking a Stars punt on their 48, Fred Lewis grabbed up the tree hall and scooted over ' for the Tiger touchdown. Quarterback Bill Pierce passed to end Ice Bowlby for the ex- tra point. The Tigers missed their veteran end, lchn Telles, who was out for the bal- ance of the season with a broken collarbcne. x Qt X . ' nl. in the second quarter with Priiatel shoving into the end zone from the l yard line to end a 69 yard drive. Tackle lerry Diefen- derfer was a stand out on defense with lO tackles while Ricky Leguina and Bill White were close behind with 9 each. Pullback Tony Boyle was the workhorse for the Tigers with 52 yards. Priiatel was runnerup with 45. 21 Summer Football Practice Session ix? Ns. Q uni! wg! At press time there is a strong effort being made by parents and school officials to sell Freshman football to our School Board. Coach Priiatel's Cubs playing some close ones, displayed a well balanced team, with good blocking and tackling. The lack of equal experience could well have made the difference in the Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles games. Torn Sweeney, until he was called up to the Varsity squad, along with lim Kluck and Ken Fryer turned in good perform- ances in the backfield. End Tom Copeland no doubt caught the eye of Varsity Coach, Tuttle, as well as Chambers at center, and Wilson and McCoy at the guard spots. Bill Black after proving himself equal to three positions should be ready for varsity action next year. ,, ,'--:V , L wi, '11, 1-' . f Q Y ',. In tournaments the Tiger mat- men fared well, finishing sec- ond in the Carpenteria tourna- ment, placing in the Cal Poly tourney, and taking a third at the SLO Athletic League Cham- pionship Tournament. ln the Carpenteria melee, Frank Silva walked off with a blue ribbon in the 138-pound class, Bill White won the 154- pound diadern, and Mike Mc- Cune captured the heavy- weight crown. ln the lunior Varsity division, Mike McCay placed first at 154. Mike Fisher Lee Hollister Butch Iones Steve Larson First Base Second Base, Right Field Pitcher Third Base Varsit Baseball Looking for their third consecutive GLF. AA championship the Tigers under Coach Iohn Dodge have the potential to go all the way, but whether they will come up with the team work to make it a reality, remains to be seen. The Bengals dropped their first two games to Taft in a double header in the oil town and two more to Ventura before settling down to win their next six games. Mel Queen, proud possessor of last year's C.l.F. Player of the Year, and first team short stop awards, as well as All-Conference first team short stop, led the Tigers in the first game of a twin win over the Santa Maria Saints. Mel belted out two hits in two times at bat, while Bill Pierce collected two for three. Bob Meacham went the dis- tance in the opener, while Butch Iones and lim Lonborg shared the nightcap. ln their first league outing of the season, the Tigers blanked the Atascadero Grey- hounds 9-U, as Iones and Lonborg again combined for the victory. Mel Queen and Floyd Lewelling both collected circuit clouts for the Bengals. ln their second league game the Bengals edged the Arroyo Grande Eagles 8-7. lt took a sixth inning save by Queen to keep the Dodgemen from falling from the top of the league standings. Fisher had walked with one away in the sixth, but was forced at second as Larson made it to first, Queen, who had been issued an inten- tional walk with two outs in the fourth was expecting another free pass as the signal was given to Eagle chucker lack Reed by his coach. Qn the first pitch Reed crossed up Queen by tossing an easy one right down the middle. Queen smiled as he took the called strike and Reed was quite proud of his strategy, He then threw three inten- tional balls to Queen. Qn the fifth pitch Queen, ready for this one, lashed it out over the Eagle outfielders. Butch Iones then put the Eagles down in the seventh. With Queen again showing his power in a 10 hit attack by the Tigers, the Atasca- dero Greyhounds fell before the Bengals 17-U. Queen collected two homers and a single, Bill Pierce homered in the third, while Mike Fisher, last year's C.l.F. and All- Conference first team first baseman, hit a double and a single. ln their third league play, the Dodgemen failed to combine their defensive game with their hitting. While collecting ll hits, they made costly errors in the field which gave the Lompoc Braves a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. In the opener, circuit blows by Dale Salyer and Mike Fisher could not make up for the timely hits by the Lompoc team. The Bengals have an experienced infield with Queen, Fisher, and third sacker Steve Larson having played together on last year's Championship team. The pitching staff of all-league player Floyd Lewelling, lim Lonborg, Butch Iones, and Bob Meacham is strong, but with the schedule of 32 games this season, it certainly has its work cut out. All we can do as we go to press at this time is to wish the Tiger Nine good luck! N .1 Coach Iohn Dodge Q s.L.o. . . Chapter l9 of the California Scholarship Federation is one aspect of our school of which we can be justly proud. The high ideals and standards instill an inspira- tion for betterment in the students. The purpose of the CSF, to provide a reward and feeling of achievement for academic work, is in itself worthy of admiration. One reward is the pin and seal of a Sealbearer. These designate the outstanding students and indicate their potential for success in later life. A record num- ber of eighteen seniors received their pins at the Seal- bearer Banquet held on the twenty-ninth of February. The activities of CSF are not completely academic. Through such events as the swim-picnic and barbeque, members help to disprove the common belief that just because a person is intelligent, he is unable to enjoy himself. Members of CSF are also encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities in order to develop the leadership needed in the future. The combination of academic excellence and success in outside activities proves the abilities of the students. This is important for it is from these young people that the statesmen and leaders of tomorrow will emerge. ll I if 151111-.. ,,...-aw 'n'e:,, , ,,,. T. - -',f, ..'n1f 'Hh. Turning out a top-notch paper on a slightly-more-than-defunct budget demands plenty of determination, imagination, and intestinal fortitude. Those three qualities were ably applied by the staff of this year's Tiger's Roar. Guided by the initiative and effort of editors-in-chief Karen Iorgensen CFirst Semester? and Bob Heathcock CSecond Semesteri, and produced by the willing brain-labor of news editor Karen lorgensen, sports editor Bob Heathcock, sports editor-business manager lim McLain, feature editor Ann Franklin, editorial consultant Peggie Keane, circulation managers Marcia Walty and Dianna Stefancich, photographer lennie Ann Hillard, and exchange editor Rosa Lee Williams, every issue contained entertaining accounts and valuable information. Under the diligent supervision of Mrs. Florence Schirza, the Tiger's Roar was again a paper in which we could take pride. 111 llger Tales STANDING: Lee Fairbanks, lim Maino, Mary Ellen Corcoran, lim Lonborq. The staff of the l96O edition of Tiger Tales is fully aware of the joys and sorrows, trials and tribulations that constitute the production of annual. The planning of pages, the scheduling of pictures, and the last minute rush to meet deadlines are all part of the fun and educational experience the staff has encountered this year. Charlene Philbrick, editor-in-chief, started planning this edition of the annual last year as soon as she was appointed. When school began, Ardath Kirchner added her bits of wisdom and ideas to the main dummy plan as associate editor. The excellent works of art were donated by Wendy Graham, who was supervised by Miss Maxwell. As business manager, Kathy Davis kept the books and collected and banked all revenue. Lee Fairbanks is, to be accredited for the photography, and Mary Ellen Corcoran for the scheduling of the senior portraits. Mike Fisher and lim Lonborg ably edited the enlarged sports section. lim Maino, Laurie Ruda, Sandra Law, and Penny McKellar were members of the editorial staff which wrote copy. The staff enjoyed the guidance and co-operation of the advisor, Mr. William Tyner. Girls, Glee Club Wespe hon 4,-cf v .. Linda Garland Junior la.ssP ff r Havocv Combine an enthusiastic cast, a hard-working technical crew, a patient director, and a tense plot. Result? A junior class production of outstanding quality and achievement! Under the skilled direction of Mr. Richard Yeo, Cry Havoc's potential of drama and meaning was transformed into an active creation. Ten army nurses, bunked in an abandoned-gun-emplacement-turned-bomb-shelter on Bataan, struggle to save the wounded and dying and at the same time to preserve some measure of their dignity and femininity during the bloodiest heights of World War ll in the Philippine theater. Doc Marsh, a veteran surgeon dedicated to his work, and Smitty, a taciturn young woman hardened by war who serves as Doc's right-hand nurse, are carrying on the work of maintaining a mobile hospital unit at the front despite their own waning endurance and shortages of supplies and additional help. When relief comes in the form of eight green civilian volunteers, it requires the combined supervision of Doc and Smitty plus the morale-boosting optimism of big-hearted Flo Harris, another enlisted nurse assisting Smitty, to rid the new girls of their initial terror and steel them for the work they must do. Amid the bombing and slaughter of the days that follow, many personal tragedies and sacrifices occur and each girl undergoes subtle changes in character and out- look, but all find warmth in companionship and service. An unknown spy, a case of insanity, and an orphaned native baby com- plicate Smitty's burden of responsibility as the lapanese draw a steadily tightening ring around the island, finally smothering all possibility of evacua- tion or reinforcement. Yet, although the play ends with a despairing wail from the baby and the girls ascend to face the machine guns of the victorious Iapanese, a clear note of hope remains vibrating in the stirring strains of Battle Hymn of the Republic, and in the knowledge that the inherent good of the individual has again triumphed over the forces of evil. A highly effective sound track was another innovation that gave Cry Havoc its rare character and labeled it one of the finest presentations of the year. ir' 1: vzf ' ffl -1 l 4 , 7 -.
