Thanks should be given to the following people through whose combined efforts the job .of editing this yearbook has been made much less difficult-the administration, seniors, classes, sports, features, activities, clubs, candids, advertisement editors, their assistants, and the photography class. I have not only enjoyed being a part of this yearbook but have also found great pleasure in working with these people. Maw 0 O MR. NELS B. NELSON O I '4 This year our senior students are graduating into a world that has also graduated. The people of our planet have entered into a technological age so changed that we can truly say-our world will never be the same again. As rin adult in this new period of time our young people will have to exert their utmost efforts to make decisions that are wise not only in a personal sense but also in regard to the future of our globe and the vast area around it. The commitments that our people will be called on to make in this rapidly changing world will require each individual to have an understanding of science. In a democracy, however, it is also vital that each person be informed regarding the human relations, the social adjustments, and the economic problems of our new age. Analysts in press, radio, and television will both confuse and clarify. It is the sacred duty of a citizen of a democratic nation to know and comprehend the affairs of the community, state, nation and world. It has been the earnest endeavor of each and every teacher and administrator at San Lorenzo High School to prepare our graduates to make the important decisions of this era with confidence, judgement, and knowledge. MOON Head Counselor GREETINGS TO THE GRADUATING SENIORS Senior Counselors have been privileged to share with you of the graduating class your problems, plans, hopes, and aspirations, during your years at San Lorenzo High. Because of this personal relation- ship and unique interest, we cannot help experiencing a genuine sense of loss in the severing of this friendly, day to day association. However, our constant endeavor has been to guide, encourage, and promote your maturity into young men and women who are capable of' taking your places as intelligent, well adjusted, and contributing members of our adult society. We trust that you are now ready for this new challenge. It is not with sadness, then, that we see you depart, but rather with sincere confidence in you, and with best wishes for your future. MRS. LAUDENSCHLAGER MRS. PARKER MR. FLORES GREETINGS FROM THE SENIOR COUNCIL Because of the many activities which the seniors undertake during their senior year, they have organized a class government. This government is composed of elected officers and five committees. The elected officers are the president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. The heads of the committees are appointed by the officers. The members of the committees are elected from each of the senior social studies classes. The following committees are responsible for the success of the graduating class of '58. The senior show committee, the baccalaure- ate committee, the picnic and breakfast committee, announcement and will committee, and cap and gown, gift and hat committee. The duties of these committees are many. The activities of the previously mentioned committees are subject to the approval of the Senior Council which is composed of the heads of the various committees and the elected officers. Also, the Council considers any special matters which come before the Senior class. Thus, through the co-ordination of the seniors by the Senior Council and its related committees, the class govern- ment runs smoothly and makes the senior year a memorable experience. AAV, YmgA,:m,,, , .. , . I 2606 The seniors of 1958 put the first senior show of its kind on in the history of San Lorenzo High School. The showis title was '4On the Nosef' It had a cast of 18 main characters and a dancing and singing chorus. The plot was based on the many attempts of J. Forbes Robinson, President of Robin- son Rockets, Railroads, Robots, and Electric Yoyos, etc., to persuade Ben Simpson to sell his toy shop and designs. lVlr. Robinson felt that if he could obtain these designs and the land Ben's shop was on, he could make a great profit in the toy making industry. Ben Simpson, besides owning and running his toy shop, operated a shoulder holster making business, which he ran so that he could afford to put his daughter through college. He made the holsters for the local gangsters of New York. Ben made the holsters, and I L L I l 2 r 5 4 l ! i. l i I 1 x i 3 his sister, Emma, collected the money. As the story progresses, Ben Simpson con- tinues with his set idea of not selling the toy shop, and Mr. Robinson, who falls in love with Ben,s daughter, finally gives in to Ben's idea that it is better to make children happy than to make a big profit. The Senior show was a two-act musical comedy. It ran three performances and was enjoyed by all who saw it. The comedy was written by Mr. James Dunn, the drama advisor for the show. It featured many colorful dancing numbers, choreographed by Sandy Dornsife, and a wide variety of songs, by the actors and the singing chorus, led by Mr. Richard Meder. The head advisor for the show was Mr. Charles Whithead, with Mikki Adams, gen- eral chairman, and Gary Garner, co-chair- man. lm-fd, ,frmwe-his ai ww will aww kgrmwyagk AM .,,, twgt, A iw v 6 Mfr 52, J 'jg 'ss Jimi 5 A M 53 Queen Candidates-From left to right: Jeanne Mahan, Boys' Leagueg Betty Milton, G.A.A.g Janet Gettman, Service Committee, and Dianne Asklund, Students' Speakers. Miss Student Body, Loretta Travares, was crowned by Student Body President George Salmon, at the Coronation Ball on the night of October 18. Attendant, Betty Milton, and Judi McGinnis, were presented with bouquets of flowers. This was the climax of several weeks of campaigning by the candidates, each sponsored by a school club. The dance originated five years ago to promote the sale of student body cards. Each student body card holder was entitled to one vote for the candidate of his choice. , Q K r .r.-.'. The beautiful park decorations provided a romantic atmosphere, carried through by the songs of the Esquires from Arroyo High. The mood music was played by the school band, making this dance authentic. Do-nut holes and punch were the refreshments that added to the finishing touches. The chairmen were: Joan Stewart, General Chair- man, Sharon Cline, Refreshments and Publicity Chairmang Marilyn Cox, Decorationsg Kimi Miller, Financeg Diane Asklund, Entertainment, and Dorothy Garrido, Hostess. l JUNIOR PROM This year's Junior Prom, An Affair to Rememberf, was one of the ubest ever. The Juniors danced in the romantic setting of a French outdoor park to the dreamy music of Larry Cabralis five-piece combo. The delicious punch and dainty hors d'oeuvres were enjoyed by all in the relaxing atmosphere of a Parisian sidewalk cafe. Credit for the beautiful decorations, including the low- ered ceiling, a first for a Junior Prom, goes to Anita Aragon, Chairman of this committee. Betty Milton was responsible for obtaining the band, and Dr. Zarro, a hypnotist, for entertainment. In charge of refreshments was Karn Marchesi, while Faythe Oistad saw to it that the cloak room was properly run. Behind the scenesg but none- theless hard at work, were Elaine Ariza, who is probably still trying to balance the budget, Janeane Roberts, who worked very hard on publicizing the dance and promoting the sale of the tickets, and LaWanda New, whose commit- tee did a beautiful job on designing the bids. For the two hundred couples who attended the dance, as well as the ucoketailw parties before and perhaps went out to dine and dance afterwards, it was a wonderful eve- ning and truly 4'An Affair to Rememberf' Star Dust was held December 6 and was sponsored by the Spanish and German SADIE HAWKINS, DANCE The Sadie Hawkins' Dance, held each year, gives the girl a chance to grab her guy. Each girl was given a 6'Big Sisteri' who escorted her to the tea. In this way the Freshman girls became better acquainted with the upperclassmen and San Lorenzo High School. Junior and Senior girls were dressed for this occasion in their Sunday best. Entertainment was provided while all enjoyed refreshments. The cast included, among others, Elvin Ragsdale as Sakini, Ken Driggs as Colonel Wainwright Purdy III, Harold Smith as Captain Fisby, and Diane Brizzalara as Lotus Blossom. The talent displayed by these and the rest of the cast was overwhelming. They should be applauded and reap- plauded many times. Congratulations are in order for all those who participated in this great and unforget- table production. -- f nm rpms-1 :H - 1 IN QV., A cd The high spirited rallies at San Lorenzo are put on by members of the rally committee, the Yell Leaders, and Pom Pom girls. They perform skits, teach new songs and yells and introduce the players. They are put on every week during football season and are given eight times during basketball season, both lunch periods. All this is done to promote more school spirit, to get more students to attend the games and to put fight into the players. The yelling and singing that comes out of lVI-3 during these rallies prove to the players that the student body is behind them all the way, win or lose.
