As you turn the paqes of this book, you will see the familiar faces of your teachers and friends, the Well-known buildings and paths, and a record of the important activities and sports events which have accumulated during the past few months. Some day, when you take your Confederate from its shelf, thumb through its Well-worn pages, and read the meaningful messages Written for and about you, only then, will you fully realize its true value. l, alone, could not have made this book possible, as the credit goes to the many people who worked so hard to make our annual a success. The Confed- erate staff is Marilyn Poston, assistant editor, lim Pelham, business manager, Io Ann Parks, advertising manager, Arlene Garner, publicity and sales, Steve Billeb and Ted Seipel, senior class, Ioan Kavanagh and Marilyn Collins, activities, Pete Bellaria, clubs and activities, Ron Grabowski, boys' sports, Carol Guyre, girls' sports, and Ierry Miller, art editor. Other hard-Working members are Bar- bara Hansen, Marion Cleveland, Ioan Ellis, Marlyn Hitchcock, Eleanor Madrid, luanita Savage, Bob Wood, Marcia Hattell, Carl Olsiewski, Mike Moore, and Dick Atencio. My sincere thanks to each and every one of the staff members. Editor. AC NUWLEDGBMBNTS . .. The value of this, the 1954 CONEEDERATE, as of any accomplishment, lies in the infinite care and patient gathering of details which required time and effort. This book is the result of the splendid cooperation of many people who offered and gave their assistance, in order to present a vivid, and, we hope, lasting picture of life at San Lorenzo High School. Among those whom we wish to thank are the students, the administration and the faculty for their willing cooperation, even though there sometimes were class disturbances and cancellations of plans. Fairchild Portrait Studios has earned the gratitude of the staff for their earnest help in giving us outstanding pictures. We especially thank Mr. Levy of Fairchild, for the unusual and attrac- tive aerial view of our school. Special thanks go to the Daily Review, the San Leandro Morning News and to Steve Rubiolo for their courtesy in supplying extra pictures. For their help in planning and printing the yearbook, we are grateful to Bob Ozias of Lederer, Street CS Zeus Co., lnc., and to Earl Evans of California Art 6. Engraving Company. Those who cannot do without our appreciation and thanks are the business- men, merchants and professional men of the community. We could not have published this book without their kind assistance and cooperation. To conclude, we wish to acknowledge our appreciation of a person who deserves a great deal of credit and thanks. She is our advisor, Mrs. Elizabeth Stack, without whose help and guidance the task of publishing the 1954 CON' PEDERATE would have been extremely difficult. RICHARD KING NORMAN GUEST Representative Boys' League Presldent Assembly Chairman When this year's Executive Council members took office, they found the student body in debt. Under their auspices, a Miss Student Body contest was held to promote the sale of student body tickets, which was clirnaxed with a Coronation Ball. Interest aroused promoted sales, so that much of the deficit was wiped out. Through the Social and Program Committee, the Council held a student body dance in April, which was the first sox dance ever held at S. L. They also promoted after-school doughnut sales, sponsored by the school clubs and organizations. The Council helped organize the District Council, which will even- tually include all of the new schools in the Hayward Union High School District, and it also promoted the Inter-Club Council, which is composed of the presidents of school clubs and organizations. In the interest of the welfare of the student body, the Council con- ducted several campaigns, including cleanup campaigns and those to promote better conduct in the cafeteria and at the assemblies. At the beginning of the year, the Council appointed lean Stensrud as student body publicity chairman, and Milt Murdock as athletic awards chairman. Eleanor Madrid was appointed head yell leader, to finish the term of Bob Goddard, who resigned at midterm. Highlights of the season were the winning of two practice games, and the avenging of two previous defeats at the hands of El Cerrito. ln these three contests, the Rebels completely out- classed their opponents. ln the first league game, played against Richmond, a bad bounce in the final quarter spelled defeat for S.L.'s gridders. In the Ala- meda and Hayward encounters, S.L. com- pletely lost control and played their worst games of the season. Against Piedmont, the Rebels roared back, only to be stopped one foot short of victory. A fumble was also a determining facf tor in the l9-l3 loss. The El Cerrito slaughter was the bright spot of the season, and in the final game against Berkeley, the Rebs completely outplayed the champs, but two breakaway runs won for Berkeley. San Lorenzo was honored by having Ken Pierce and leri McMillin being placed on the all-county mythical eleven. PRUSH-SUPH FOOTBALL Displaying great spirit on the field, the Rebel Frosh-Soph football team came through with a successful year. ln their seven-game season, the Frosh-Soph group accounted for four wins as against three losses. Greatly outscoring their opponents, 128 to 79, these first-year S.L. gridders proved themselves even better than the win and loss record shows. Losing their first game to a strong Encinal team, the spirited Frosh-Soph came right back and up- set Alameda. Then, because of a couple of bad breaks, they lost to a strong Hayward eleven by one touchdown. Hayward accounted for two of the three losses suffered by the Frosh-Soph, as the Farmers again came out on top in a game played three weeks later. Couch B BAS BTBALL An overall record ot 17 wins, tive losses and a league record ot eight wins, two losses, was the outstanding achievement ot the S.L. B quin- tet this year. The final league standing showed San Lorenzo in second place behind the Richmond Oilers, but it was clear to all that the Rebs were the outstanding quintet at season's end. Both league losses were avenged. First A.C.A.L. team to top the Rebs was the third place El Cerrito Gauchos, they did this by tour points. ln the return match, the S.L. kids really laid it on thick, and murdered the Gauchos, 32-16. The other league defeat was at the hands ot the champion Oilers - by one point - 29-28. Again the Rebs trampled their toes in a return match, which goes to show that with a break here and there, San Lorenzo would have had the A.C.A.L. basketball pennant. S.L. placed Charlie Edwards and Lowry Mil- ler on the all-county team. Don Covey made second string, while Larry Sands received hon- orable mention. INTRAMURAL BAS ETBALL This year something new was added to the San Lorenzo high school sports program. ln place of the former C and D basketball teams, an intramural basketball program was set up. During what would have been the C and D basketball season, Coach Tony Winn took charge and instructed an everyday, after-school session ot basketball. Any boy who came out after school was ac- cepted. The basketball enthusiasts played with and against each other, according to height, weight, age and ability. They all had a chance to better their game, as some of the fundamentals of basketball were pointed out at the beginning ot each night's practice. This also proved to be an opportunity for those who intended to go out for the Varsity, Iunior Varsity or B basketball teams. By par- ticipating in this intramural program, they got in a lot of good practice which would help them in the coming basketball season. ...-14,- ff Q .fffwf 5 -aw f + l . At the time of this writing, the Rebel crew had a three and one record, scoring easy victories over St. Elizabeth, C.S.D., and San Leandro. Their lone defeat was accounted for when the Knights of Castlemont High won a closely matched meet. Coach Iohn Mclntyre lined up a full schedule for the Rebel cindermen. For the first time, San Lorenzo was represented in the El Cerrito relays with the possibility of competing in the Martinez and Hollister relays. An invitation to the Stockton Invitational track meet was sent to S.L. with the possibility of accept- ance. Other meets still to be dealt with were against Encinal, Menlo, San Ramon, Bellarmine, Centerville, and Mt. View, most of which were scheduled for the San Lorenzo oval. Being a sure bet to better their previous record in the A.C.A.L. finals, placing only once previously, the Rebels were looking forward to the big meet on May 7. Breaking almost all of the before-existing school track records, it can safely be said that this year's team was well-rounded, and one of which San Lorenzo could be proud. B TRAC When at tull strength, the lightweight Rebel cindermen were an exception- ally strong unit. ln the running events the team was well-rounded with two exceptional sprinters, Lou Pacheco and Marty Mohar. Two good distance run- ners, Ernie Oakley and Clitt Scott, gave San Lorenzo tirst places consistently in the l32O yard run and the 660 yard event. Most ot the team's strength, when it came to tield events, was in the broad jump, shot-put and discus throw. Mohar again proved outstanding as he smashed the school record in the discus throw and shot-put. Mike Mclntyre, along with Lou Pacheco, give the lightweight track team its strength in the broad jump. The outlook tor next year's varsity track team looks tairly good because ot this year's fine B team. Most oi the lightweights will compete on varsity next year as some already were this year in the practice meets. 1 X E A , s L ' W inf in I, 2 Q Y . 11 - Lou Pacheco- B sprinter , PAUL SMITH Cocxch t 1 22. 5.4 -2 - E.
