We feel that all of these things are very closely related to our school life. We have attempted to transfer this feeling into a publicized form for your pleasure and remembrance. This year has been an unusually thrilling one, filled with unconquerable school spirit and many new achievements which have given us an abundant supply of material. At the close of this year we, the annual staff, extend our apprecia- tion to Miss Mueller, who advised the art work in this book, and to Jean Buckley, who did so much of it, to Nick Champlin, for his patience and good pictures, to our editor, Betty Jansen, for her able leadership, to Steve Peck, our competent business manager, and to all others who helped us achieve our goal, that of presenting to you, the students of San Juan, this book. Slllllll lillillllllilll The Student Council is composed of student body officers. class presidents. and representatives of both the Girls, and Boys' Leagues. The student governors this year were very active in doing all they could to make school more pleasant for the Sim Juan students. One ofthe main tasks ofthe Council is to distribute Student Body funds among the various teams and groupsg namely. to balance the budget. This usually causes a local Battle of the Sexesy' and this year proved no exception. Other duties are to advertise school events, report the results of our games to the newspapers. sponsor programs and to provide entertainment during Student Body meetings. This year's council feels confident their successors will carry on the same cooperative work. X-'WV Ps X .I Top Ron, lrf! In rigfrl: IS. tlansen, Presidentg A. Freid, Secretary: K. The theme was Nationali- ties,H and Cllie Mae Fogle was awarded first prize for the best Costume of the evening. The other item on the list was the annual Mothers' Tea in May. A short fashion show was given by the girls in the sewing Classes and a program was also presented. Due to the shortage of sugar, no refreshments were served. Every girl at San juan belongs to the Girls' League and much of its success is due to the capable leadership of Miss Marjorie Berekhan, Dean of Girls. Green and wiggling freshmen though we were, we had visions and dreams of becoming high and mighty Juniors. Now that we have achieved that goal our Junior year has passed far too quickly, and our present goal is of the coming Senior year. The Junior play, Ever Since Evef, lived up to the standards of all Junior plays char have been given at San Juan. Ever Since Even Was a hilarious comedy that proved what the male sex has been trying to prove for centuries, ever since Adam Due to the world situation and blackouts, the unior prom had to be postponed We are sure the prom would have been a complete success, since the cookies for the prom had been baked, and all was ready for the great evenr With the closing of a successful year, we, the uniors are prepared to come back to San uan worthy of the title of Seniors 681 fax: 0 bt XI ss Xlueller dusr X F d YI rsidcnt P S1 president K lxll secrerarx treasurer mba Q Achievements Now that we are on the verge of becoming upper classmen we look back over our second year of high school with glad remembrance. Although we did not win the Freshman-Sophomore Scamper, We thor- oughly enjoyed the fun connected with it. The Sophomore Hop, at which the South American theme prevailed, was attended by a large number of the student body and alumni. The walls of the old gym were decorated with drawings of dancing senores and senoritas. Other Latin American features were used to add to the spirit of the dance. Without the careful guidance of our advisers and the cooperation of all the members of our class we feel that the success we achieved through this year could not have been therefore We extend our thanks and appreciation to these people and all others who helped 2 .3 f f B Class oI'411 IL RI 1 null .z mu Kr ru un IK K rKxIwKr I7 mul 1Krm.m I X rr.1mnK un K I 1 r :nk K x XzII K unun um I Ku ur mp fm B Sn- r I I Km K. n .uK :HK K I X! an on Xiu K Krn r.1 K I K-cn X J n Km n r.zK 1 Kx mm em .1 I Snm Irumbul BUTTLIKI PIL ILRI r mp I-I n K K J 5 e K ur er A K J 1 IIJIurm.zn lu vnex n Knn one XXI In R B an n :cle J K m a L. :mn n K I a I. Band This year our band, under the Hne leadership of Maddux I-Iogin got off to a flying start by opening Teachers' Institute in the Memorial Auditorium with a half-hour concert. Mr. Hogin told the band not to look forward to the trips to Santa Cruz or San Diego because of the war, but nevertheless, he did say they would probably go to Chico for the annual state contest. Remembering the band's high ratings in the past, each member did his part to make the Chico trip come true and to bring back the traditional high honors. There were not many Freshmen in the band, due to the fact that Mr. Hogin organized a Junior Band to take care of the members who are really interested but not ready for the Senior Band. Music The Girls' Choir, composed of thirty students, did a fine job again this year under the leadership of Mr. Hogin. They provided beautiful singing at our concerts and will be heard again at the Baccalaureate Service in May. The Orchestra, although quite small, entertained between acts at the junior and Senior plays and at the band concerts. NWe expect to hear them again at graduation. Pleasing songs were presented by the Girls' Octette again this year at our concerts. Our five drum majorettes livened up the football games in the fall by doing some extra special strutting and twirling, and putting the band through their paces at half time. They were also with the band at some of the basketball games. CHOIR 'liufi Rflll, lf!! lu riefil: Ci. llurns, Ii. liusli. li. Sandsnid, I.. llewald, YY. Taylor, ll. Rose, XVood. O. liogle. P. Football With two regulars left from last year's squad, Coach McArthur started his pre-season practice with an inexperienced and un- developed team. Our first game with Nevada City showed lack of experience but plenty of fight, and the next few games, against strong, non-league opponents, showed an ever-developing San Juan team. This year's eleven used a wide-open box formation with the quarterback taking the ball directly off the center. We scored in all games except the first two, and much of the scoring was set up by passing attack. Five mainstays will be lost, four by graduation and one who is now in the U. S. Marines. Track After seeing such strong opposition as McClatchy, Roseville, and Marysville bow to our three teams of track, Coach Ross Clover stated that our chances for another championship team are very good. This yearls A team was bolstered greatly by many of the BH veterans who moved up into varsity competition. In all three divisions we are very strong and intend to furnish stiff resistance to the opponents in the remaining meets. The last two years have produced many promising athletes from the Freshman and Sophomore classes who have proven their worth in many meets. Although Coach Clover has now joined the ranks of Uncle Sam's navy men, track will be carried on under the able supervision of Nick Barbieri. Another delegation is expected to travel to Fresno where the Spartans will defend their record which was set last year by the Medley Relay Team. A congregation of many winners will also represent San Juan in the Central and Northern Section track meets. Not unlike the regular track teams, the Cross Country teams were very strong with the B team winning their C.C.H.S.A.L. cup. The varsity and C teams took second in their respective divisions. .A SS3- IA?-' L-f l Toll Imfl: S. Peck, NV, Ferguson. I.ou'i'r Lrfl: D. Robison, B. Brock, R. Deaver, Howard. J. Furliman. Girls' Sports Besides the regular sports, many new sports were introduced to the girls this year by Miss Shomate. Paddle-tennis, handball, and horseshoes were among those presented. These new sports were received with great enthusi- asm by the girls. Among the old sports, tennis is still one of the most popu- lar. As the book Went to press, the team had been selected and had played and Won one game with Elk Grove. The girls' gym classes have been made more enjoyable and interesting because of the great variety of sports available. A fgk V spa- t..
