Pres- ented here at San juan are courses which enable students to initiate long range plans toward higher education as well as realize immediate goals in vocational training. Both higher education and vocational training are important to the Well-rounded student. One may combine his classes so that he is able to receive the benefits of both fields. As students choose their course to follow throughout their years at San juan, they must keep in mind the never-ending phase of learning which goes on Whether in school or out. Education for living may well be living for education, for under- standing, for service, for peace, and for good-will. Sue Bleyl Editor-in-Chief 4 fl IUII I u Lf! H A 6 DEDICA TION During the closing days of the Spring semester of 1963, the faculty and students of San juan were immeasurably saddened by the death of our Dean of Boys , Paul Palazzo. Mr. Palazzo had been an invaluable member of the faculty since his arrival in 1946, a young teacher recently graduated from the university. Many former students remember him as a dedicated teacher in his chosen fields of business education and history. Hundreds more recall his years as a trusted friend in the counselors' office. In 1956 he was appointed to the office of Dean of Boys, becoming responsible for a large share of the discipline and of the academic supervision of the school. The qualities which Mr. Palazzo brought to these tasks may all be characterized by the Word ABSOLUTE--absolute devotion to duty, absolute dependability, absolute integrity. We of the faculty and students of San juan miss him greatly, and will miss him long. 7 if , ...N A ta-3 i1 wuui N lu! mxk1,3.,,..K-. A V xi E W Q gg, w KK 1 3, ' Gai. Vocational preparation should include a broad background in general education to provide a foundation for the specific training for a particular job and also to provide fundamental preparation for future jobs which may not even exist at this time. Also, with the continued acceleration of our technological develop- ments, it will require less man hours of Work to produce the necessities of life and all of us will be able to look forward to more time for leisure and cultural activities. Your four years of high school have given you the fundamental preparation for a successful life. But to insure this success you should take advantage of every oppor- tunity to continue your education so that you will be better prepared to adjust to the changes and pressures of modern society. Good luck in your endeavors. 11 MR. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Arts is an integral part of general education that makes a realistic contribution to life adjust- ment education. It shares with other areas of the school, the responsibilities for promoting the optimum development of the good citizen. The unique contributions of Industrial Arts are centered mainly around significant aspects of the manu- facturing and construction industries and their effects on daily living. Those who participate in the Industrial Arts programs receive orientation in the areas of production, comsumption, and recreation through actual experience in planning, producing, servicing, and repairing various types of consumer goods in common usage. Through these experiences young people learn about material goods. They learn how such goods are made. They learn how to use and maintain them intelligently. They develop general skill and resourcefulness in working with things- technical and mechanical. They learn facts, principles, and procedures about tools, material, processes, mechanics, and design. They learn about woods, metals, engines, structures, and other items of importance. They learn how to convey their ideas through the language of industry and building. The areas of Industrial Arts are not regarded as separate subjects but as areas of experience and segments of the total program. MARC BRANN 30 HOMEMAKING Education for Living 'is symbolic of the purposes and objectives presented in each course offered by the Home Economics Department. Students do not have to wait two, twelve or twenty years for basic concepts to strike a fertile field and prove their value. A student can conclude her Clothing Experience at any stage with a feeling of being better qualified to create her own attire, as well as judge the efforts of others who attempt to sell her their wares. Food is required by every- one, and the lessons learned in this area will long be remembered. Decorative Arts classes give students an opportunity to be creative and original, as well as to develop a flair for original, artistic interpretations of everything from moods to the season. I-Iomemaking is an eye-opener course and serves best when it intro- duces students to the many advantages of a liberal education for current as well as future living. Four specific areas are explored and students are encouraged to consider this just a beginning, and to continue in their search for an educa- tion which will help them with their living problems in the future. Where she had completed studies in sciences and languages- German, Flemish, Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, and Russian. She plans to be an interpreter. She was greeted on arrival with a party. Everyone was excited over her arrival. The Juniors were interested in their chances of going abroad, like Martine, as a foreign exchange student with the AMERICANS ABROAD PROGRAM that Martine had participated in. They would have the chance to apply in October. Martine made friends fast and San juan's students were taken with her immediately. Linder BLOCK SAN JUAN The purpose of the Boys' Block Society is to promote higher stan- dards and better sportsmanship in inter-scholastic athletics by seeking victory through the use of fair and legal means. Under the dual faculty leadership of Mr. Schroeder and Mr. Sekul, the Boys' Block requires that a boy be a Sophomore and have received at least one Varsity Block to join. Perhaps one of the wealthiest organizations on campus , the Block S.j. gave a grant of money to the athletic department which has been used for very pro- fitable means. Leading the Block S.j. in all its ventures are the five great officers: Gene Windham -Presidentg Bob Smith- Vice Presidentg Gary Marley-Secretaryg Bob Dran-Treasurerg and Ken Wilson-Sargeant-at-Arms. Through their help and that of the members and advisors, the Block San Juan has be- come an integral part of San Juan's athletic department. Top: Mr. Sekul Below: Mr. Schroeder :Advisors 67 T... An important part our San Juan's Music Department has been formed because of the alliance of those talents. The band performs , along with the chorus , several times during the year, each time presenting excellent programs. The latter seeming to top each pre- ceeding performance before it. The San juan High School Symphonic Band does , indeed, contribute much to the enjoyment of not only the entire school but also the whole of the community. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's San juan basketball team opened its season with a thrilling victory, during overtime, over Hiram johnson High School. This year's team is young: there are four juniors on the starting lineup. Coach Sekul has led the team forward, but the opposition has proved much too stiff. San Juan, therefore, is now in fourth place, at the Greenback Notes deadline. Next year's team should do great things, because of the training that the juniors are receiving. The cindermen enjoyed a successful season last year by taking the crown in the Capital Valley Conference. The squad is anchored by the running of john Redfearn, last years conference 220 yard champion. Gene Windham is a consistant scorer and shows Well in meets all season. We have several other outstanding seniors: Marley, Boyles , Goddard, Rosa, and with the help of several outstanding juniors , we should be right up there with the conference leaders again this year. Some of the highlights of that exciting year was the successful fresh- men frolic, Snowball Serenade. We can attribute its success to the class members as a whole but especially to the leadership of our class officers: President, Gene Windham, Vice President, Sue Bleylg Secretary, Sharon Frazer, and Treasurer, Renee Ellis. In our sophomore year another group of outstanding officers: President, Gene Windham, Vice President, Deloris Worthington, Secretary, Denise Milletteg and Treasurer, Renee Ellis, spent many hours organizing our Roaring Twenties Sophomore Hop and many other class activities. Finally, with 9 sigh of relief, we became juniors--upperclassmen. Tahitian Dream was the theme of our junior Prom. President Hal Hart- zell, Vice President jim Goddard, Secretary Sherry Kuttler, and Treasurer Ellen Park spent many hours working with Prom committees to make our dance a huge success. Sheila Grant reigned as queen of our prom with Pam Bond and Sharon Frazer were her attendants. With a little regret but much happiness , we entered our senior year and have become the mighty, mighty seniors. This year will be the turning point for many of us. Now, in looking back, we find that there are so many people that we are thankful for their time and patience with us and so many memories which won't easily be forgotten, that weare amazedat the progress that we as individuals have made through our years here at San juan. Leading us through many experiences were: President, Bob Smith, Vice President, Connie Ander- son, Secretary, Denise Milletteg and Treasurer, Pat Bartlett. Wonderland by Night , our senior ball and Roman Holiday our senior banquet, brought us many long-lasting memories. It hasn't always been proms , balls , banquets, and extra curricular activities for us, however, for there has been much work put into academic studies and educational experiences by each member of our senior class. We would like to express our gratitude to the administration, and faculty for their continu- ous conscientious guidance. Education is valuable, our class is a prize-- what we do in the future is unpredictable, but it is up to each one of us as individuals to make our lives successful. 131 fe .V .- ,v v 4 , :.::,Y V l y: ' 332 L Q4 -N 'X .V 1 ,-11 1 X u if Y' V Q ff Q - W fy , rw: ' W' -',, A f Q, u F51 Q '. During this time they have accomplished many .things which they are all proud of. As Freshmen they Chose Lynda Shear as Presidentg Tony Warbington, Vice-Presidentg Laurey Thompson, Secre- taryg and Marcia Millette as Treasurer, to help lead them through their first year. Pigskin Frolic was their first successful dance. For the 1961 homecoming, Stephanie Gerard represented them. To lead them in their Sophomore year they elected Mike Kennedy as Presidentg Laurey Thompson as Vice-PreS- identg Sherry Meyers as Secretaryg and Gail Dedman as Treasurer. The Sophomore Hop was their second memor- able dance, which was Dog Patch Drag. Lorraine Mansker reigned as the Sophomore princess at the 1962 home- coming. They have now completed their biggest and by far the hardest year as mighty juniors and loyal Spartans. Bob Dran as President, Joe Lucito as Vice-President, Pam Abbott as Secretary, and Yvonne Lea as Treasurer helped to make this a year they will remember. Their most memorable evening was the night of Carousel Enchante, their junior Prom. Reigning over the prom were Queen Jeanne Kaggerud, and King Terry Harold. Val Grimen- stein represented them at the 1963 homecoming as junior princess. They are now anxiously awaiting their turn to be Senior leaders. Orientation Day climaxed the initiation of the class of 1967. New faces, noisy loolcers, flying feet, and tardy bells were all part of the confusion that introduced them to San Juan. Soon, though, this chaos came to be just a part of the seven-hour school day. The i other parts were filled with good memories and lots of studies. No wonder the Freshmen want to come back next year to be initiated again, only this time as Sophomoresl Some of the good memories of this year's Frosh include the busy election of officers, exciting games, the winning of the Rally Trophy, and a colorful Freshman dance. Thanks go to the FreshmanAdvisor: Miss Cale, Mr. Cornwell, Miss Gattuso, Mr. Lehman, and Miss Saunders. Because of their unceasing help, these new members of the San juan Student Body find themselves standing firm and true. .fitfy V . ,,.- 'Tx fy ,J N sf ' N ' 'R . '7' VHD- av A 'ff M Abbott K.
