But some of them weren't so lucky as we are and had to go all the way to Roseville or Sacramento to attend classes. Finally, a new high school was built near Fair Oaks, and those early students trooped cautiously up to find out what San uan Union High School was like What they found was Just a small bunch of buildings but they decided to pitch in and see what would come of it Those first students that San uan turned out all seemed to be pretty good citizens They made successful places for them elves in the world ffor there is another world after graduation difficult though it may be to imagine San uan prospered and grew and today we are a school with an enviable reputation throughout our neighboring communities To this spirit of Growth and Change we dedicate this year s Greenback Notes .5 I 0 , . . They made each of us mem' bers feel proud that the ruling organization of our student body was a serious, responsible group cap- able of meeting all the problems of school government and of solving them successfully. Student Body funds provided new uniforms for the footb ll a . basketball, and baseball teams of this year. Perhaps this was the hs h l p yc ooqical stimulus that carried them to their successes. This fund was compiled through the sale of Student Body Cards and Student Body Program tickets, and by charging admgsion to our home games of this season. ur budget was successfully met in all ways. and San Yuan received much add d b e pu licity in the local newspapers this year. All this was accomplished through the student officers of San Iuan, and may next years' council be equally competent. l. to r. Behind Miss Miner's massive desk sits our Iunior Editor, Marjorie Hubert, who is responsible for the calendar. From time to time she is heard to inquire timidly, Doesn't anyone know how to spell 'asinine'? In another corner, glazed-eyed Business Mana- gers Claiborne and Bliss sit huddled together, muttering unintelligibly continuous streams of astronomical numbers, while Snap-Editors Peterson and Mayberry sit on the tables laughing uproariously at their own snap pages. lt may be difficult for an outsider to divine anything at all funny about these pages, but the two laugh on. The remainder of the Staff sits together, ostensibly pondering new ideas, but actually swapping jokes, and our noble Editor is seen flitting confusedly from group to group, creating more and more confusion. He was an excellent president of the '47 Thespian Society, and he helped cast and direct many San Iuan productions while appearing in many more. He proved very versatile, for he worked backstage, too, handling many paint buckets and light bulbs during his career. e,,..,.MM flj Q44 IIMMY MONICAL Leadership Award Iimmy was a leader in many ways. He could run like the wind and made a wonderful athlete. When he tried his hand at politics, he proved an excellent Class President and a capable Student Body President, He managed to squeeze in some studying 'along with his numerous other activities, and was even an Honor Scholarship member. And while he was so very popular with the girls, the boys thought the world of him, too. ' TERESSA ZANETTA Scholarship Award Teressa was so active in all school affairs that one would never have dreamed she was getting about the best grades in the class of '47, But her record as a lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation ta phenomenal total of A's and B'sl proves that she really was. She even announces that studying didn't hurt her a single bit, and from all ap- pearances, she's right. LOUIS KOVANDA Science Award Louie shone brilliantly, not only in physics and chemistry, but also in all four years of mathematics. His experiments always seemed to come out just as he expected, and he usually came up first with the right answer in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry. A high point man where grades are concerned and a good all-round athlete, he proved that science too can be fun. LOYD KELLY Athletic Award Loyd received the sports award this year because he was our class' finest athlete and one of its best examples of sports- manship. He contends that basketball is his favorite sport. and he has made points for San Iuan during all of his four years in school, captaining 1947's 'A' squad. A three year track man and a first string halfback in the football lineup for 1946 and 1947, he was also an officer of his class and an honor student. lv- Pat Armstrong Ioe Astle Iune Baugh George Biechner Isabelle Campoy Weir Casten Clarence Champlin -.,k 3 Helen Chubb . ilzi V V Q Billie lean Claiborne George Clark A L V A ' Q if ' ' reni -. Of course, being Iuniors has paulwham been very satisfying, Why, ever since the first president day of school when we so nonchalantly donned our new upper-classmen's privileges, we have been hav- ing a whale of a time. We like to think our Ir.-Sr. Banquet was unsurpassable, and you saw what a success our Play was. We threw the most beautiful Prom, and the Student Council certainly knew who we Iuniors were. And how could our ball teams have done nearly so well without our Iunior prowess? So it's quite obvious that being Iuniors has been wonderful, and we are told being Seniors is even better. We will be sorry to see the '47 class leave because they have been fine Seniors, but we are certainly going to try to equal them. Of course, there were new classes and new teachers to cope with, but we soon got back in the swing of things. We then settled down to make ourselves a super-deluxe reputation, and we think our efforts were reasonably well rewarded. We elected four extra-competent class officers and presented the Student Body with a Hop that broke all attendance records. We finally made our way through Mr. Dickens' Tale of Two Cities, and with no small amount of pride saw several of our more athletically inclined Fourty-Niners receive their Block letters. None of this year's school activities went by without hearty representation from our class. ' X Next year we will be Iuniors and upper-classmen, and it is our fond hope that we may bring more glory and honor to San Iuan by being as capable a class as those that have gone before us. Even that rugged initiation the Seniors gave us was fun, and after our Reception, we knew we were just as much Spartans as the rest of the fellers. X BOYS' BLOCK The 1947 Boys' Block was one of the largest and most active of all the Block Societies in San Iuan's history. We spon- sored the first Annual Boxing Show that was such a big success, decorated the girls' poor dilapidated gym for our Block Dance, and carried on the Iunior Spartan League. This League was participated in by all the grammar schools in the San Iuan district, and pennants were awarded to the champions in each sport. Block members coached the Iunior Spartan teams and of- ' ficiated at their games. We sold refreshments at the football games, ushered at vari- ous school activities, had some rowdy initiations that looked brutal but were fun for every- one, sponsored some snazzy parties, and tried to be all- round good examples for fu- ture Block members. We all agree that the Block was this year's most enjoyable activity for us, and we wish great suc- cess to thosei who wear our school letter next year. We earned all this money selling pompons, pop corn, soda pop, hats, and any' thing else we could lay our hands on. Opportunity need knock but once for us. We girls are proud of our organi- zation and know that now it is rolling well, it will continue to be a success- ful asset to San Iuan when we are long-gone, old, and grey. The speedy San Iuan machine rolled to pay dirt seven times that afternoon, crushing Roseville 45 to 6 and handing that team the worst defeat in its football history. A much bigger Christian Brothers reserve eleven handed our boys their first defeat of the season. Mainly: To Miss Meaner, Miss Moaner. or Misdemeanor, fcommonly known as Miss Minerl. Theoretically, we, the editor and business manager, get the book to press. Actually, she is the real hero. To Miss For-Pete's-sake-more-individuals? Mueller. Wouldn't our book have been horrid-looking if she hadn't flitted regularly in and out of the Annual room, leaving in her wake a galaxy of little gems of artistic wisdom. To Miss Whoops-another-flashbulb-please Mueller ire abovel. She gets two thank ye's. She also took and printed all our lovely daguerreotypes. To Mr. Keilholtz of the Sacramento Lithograph Co. He tried to talk us out of everything we did, but he shaped our book into the literary master- piece it is. He also made sure all pages were right side up, etc. To Mr. Silvius of Silvius and Schoenbackler. He made the covers, bound the book, got all the pages straight, and GOT THE BOOK OUT ON TIME! To the Art Classes. Much appreciated hard work went into the cartoons, but the clever little things done by Shirley Ann Iohnson happened tocatch our eye. To the Special Editors of the Staff. This includes the Art Editors, the Snap Editors, the Sports Editors, and the two Iunior Class members. Without your hard work and clever suggestions, we might still be trying to decide on a theme for the book. To ourselves, Iulie and Billie. We published an Annual. Nice book, huh? It certainly is. Lots of fun working on it, huh? It certainly was. But hard work too, huh? Hlt certainly was. We're surely grateful to those in the list above, huh? We certainly are.
