The official history of the Normal School of the State of California, later San Jose State College, began with a meeting of the Board of Trustees in the office of Governor Stanford May 23, 1862. If the honorable trustees could have foreseen the 1946 Spardi Gras, they probably would have thrown the minutes of the first meeting (left) into the Sacramento river and wiped their hands of the whole business. Instead they built in 1876 on San Jose ' s Washington Square the mag- nificent building shown below. It was one of the finest normal school buildings in the world. The great earthquake of 1906 shook it apart so that it had to be torn down. Lower right, the famous old Training School building, v.hich was a part of the Campus until I 937.
