No good conduct, no meritorious service, no Pacific or Medi- terranean or European theatre decorations have been awarded San Jose State College. Nevertheless the old school is a battle-scarred veteran of dis- tinguished service on a score of educational fronts . . . Born in 1862 during the war between the states, fortress in a defense of educational standards during two world wars, the College has fought for more than 80 years in the forefront of assaults on out- moded practices and outworn traditions . . . Advance scout for many a campaign into new fields of service, it has steadfastly opposed and overcome barriers to its progress ... Its decorations and honors are the thousands of fine young men and women who have gone forth from its campus into suc- cessful and happy lives . . . San Jose State College now opens a new chapter in history — a period of rapid expansion, new buildings, new serv- ices, new horizons. To the College, then, at the end of an era, is this La Torre dedicated with pride and affection ... To our Alma Mater we say, Well Done. 15 Wr S TAT E YESTERDAY n fr H £L taf rPt t ' t L. fijLtz rtt- fa 7 m jAtu i a , d m£ date Sruritstited, a r -u .ctf aucl usu r ft Ciu U jMJQj ri Vac ' y l( if ri cOtr j sA-? , y . The official history of the Normal School of the State of California, later San Jose State College, began with a meeting of the Board of Trustees in the office of Governor Stanford May 23, 1862. If the honorable trustees could have foreseen the 1946 Spardi Gras, they probably would have thrown the minutes of the first meeting (left) into the Sacramento river and wiped their hands of the whole business. Instead they built in 1876 on San Jose ' s Washington Square the mag- nificent building shown below. It was one of the finest normal school buildings in the world. Two years later it burned down. f sJ £ Ac isut m ■« - - ? You ' ll note the 1946 co-ed has it all over the 1908 model for looks, too. Lower left, the second building in the San Jcse State College series was made of brick. Therc ' d be no second fire, the rberd cf Trustees vowed. And there wasn ' t. The great earthquake of 1906 shook it apart so that it had to be torn down. That makes our fourth great war. We were a little young for the Civil War, but we have our star flags for the other three. While we go into these wars wholeheartedly at the call of our country, we realize that they are stupid things, wasteful, brutal. Inevitably they maim both victor and vanguished. Already we are feeling the backlash from the present war. We are sensing the changes in stan- dards, objectives and attitudes. It ' s a time for steadiness, young folks, for clear thinking and courageous action, a time for kind- liness, tolerance, cooperation. She was the first student to enroll in San Jose State College. Of course, it wasn ' t San Jose State College then. It was the Normal School of the State of California. And it wasn ' t in San Jose. It was estab- lished on the ground floor of a high school building on Powell Street in San Francisco. Principal Ahira Holmes first opened its doors on the morning of July 18, 1862. And that ' s where Miss Fink came in. Or rather, when she came in. She was the first to enter. Before the morning was over, four others had signed the roll. They were Miss Nellie Bart, Miss Emily Hill, Miss Ellen Baldwin, Miss Ellen Grant, and Mr. Frank G. Randle. One gentleman and five ladies. The entire student body of an insti- tution which anticipates next Autumn quarter an enrollment of between 4500 and 5000 students. Hats off to P. Augusta Fink. She started a great big ball rolling. LaTorre wishes it had Miss Fink ' s picture for this section. It wishes she were here today, to see the 1946 LaTorre and to visit the Campus. We ' d like to show her the institution ' s progress since that first day. She ' d be a a little shocked of course. Gals didn ' t wear those short dresses in 1862. But she ' d be impressed, too. And very proud. And then we ' d like to show her the drawing of the College of To- morrow that appears on the next two pages, and we ' d tell her: Augusta, the cross-hatched areas on this drawing are the present buildings. We ' ve come a long way since I 862, don ' t you think? 164 The broken-lined shading indicates construction which is about to begin, and for which the College now has $5,41 6,336 available. This is what is planned: A new Music Building for $433,300. An Engineering Building for $433,- 300. An expansion of the Women ' s Gymnasium, including a fine new pool, $270,000. That will make the Women ' s Gym more than twice as large as it is now. An addition to the Men ' s Gym, $100,000. An Adminstration Building, $248,000. An addition to the Student Union, $ I 66,000. A Speech Building for $325,000. An addition to the Boiler Plant of $55,000. Also to be erected as soon as building conditions permit will be large dorms for men and women at an amount still to be determined. And then, from other funds, the College plans to build a $50,000 Memorial Chapel in honor of our war dead. And after we had waited for all that to sink in we ' d ask Augusta, What do you think of that? Then Miss Fink, who was probably a thoughtful young lady, would say: My goodness! And what comes next? That would be a hard one to answer. Who con predict in 1946 the ulti- mate growth and importance of San Jose State College? By standards of age in the West we are now an old institution, established during the Civil War — and indeed, soon after California became a state. In terms of the limitless future, however, San Jose State College is very young indeed. What lies ahead for our Alma Mater one hundred, two hundred, five hundred years from now? Augusta, you ' ll just have to do your own guessing. But here ' s a tip from 1946 LaTorre. Don ' t be too modest — or you ' ll miss the boat. 165 SAN C h , ui mi M N 1 $ COi TS tWTVRL N-l , ' s ' A ' ' ■s ' ' ' A i ' ' s ' ' A ' ' ' A 8MBM V SPffCH .
